STUPID BEAST! by Simanis

[raw]
made by Simanis for LD 44 (JAM)

STUPID BEAST! is a Path of Exile (PoE) fangame and a Ludum Dare 44 submission.

Story-wise, it probably won't make sense if you haven't played PoE.

GAMEPLAY

  • survive as long as possible without being captured by beastmaster Einhar
  • pick up potions to restore health
  • destroy green tiles by sacrificing some of your health
  • you earn score by destroying tiles and surving

CONTROLS

  • WASD or arrow keys to move
  • spacebar to destroy tiles
  • spacebar or mouse to press buttons

Installation

For best performance, it's suggested to download and run the windows build, but the game is also available for playing on the browser. I've noticed that it runs worse on fullscreen (at least on Chrome).

Credits

  • art & code - Sīmanis Mikoss
  • most sfx & audio - taken from Path of Exile

EDIT - post LD update

The game version has been updated after the end of LD submission deadline.

Here's what's new:

  • Potions and destroyable tiles no longer spawn outside of map
  • Added option to mute game
  • Your highest score is saved (data is lost upon closing/reloading the game)
  • Adjusted voice line volume

The original Ludum Dare version is still available in windows build.

The edge tiles are unreachable, and the potions sometimes spawn there  (and sometimes even outside of the map)

Nice art style, it was fun for a few minutes, but it needs a bit more depth. Keep it up!

@tudvari thanks, Todd. It should be easy to fix potion spawning outside of the map :) Don't know if I will be able to overcome my laziness and actually do it

I've enjoyed the art style and concept, but i never felt a sense of danger, there's a lot of health potions everywhere almost all the time.

@edevjogos thanks for the feedback. I'm working on an update that should up the difficulty a bit. With any luck, it will be ready this weekend

Simple concept, but it makes for a super fun gameplay loop! So impressed with how elegant this is. Also helps that the art is very cute and the sound is so well made. Will add that potions on edge pieces are quite tough to reach, a lot of grinding into the corner is required.

Thanks a lot, @jam373! This is a fan game, so I took the sound directly from the original. All else was made by me, though :)

Nice work! Fun little game for sure.

In one of my attempts, the hunter got stuck outside the map: (He was twitching back and forth every frame.) It also appears to be possible to squeeze out of the map yourself, probably due to the high speed of the player character.

Other than that though, nice work. I assume the music belongs to PoE, so wouldn't really be fair to take it into consideration, but it did fit quite well.

@binaryspark I wonder how did you manage to achieve that :D I know it's possible because of how bad I'm at using colliders, but still :D Yes, the music belongs to PoE, so opted out of audio category. Thanks for the feedback!
