Cyberpunk 2076: Independence Day by Raphiell

[raw]
made by Raphiell for LD 44 (JAM)

"Just a cool dude with a Jacket" was my idea when making this game, in hindsight, my idea should have been the actual theme...

Controls: Arrow Keys or A/D to move. Shift to sprint, but watch out, you can't control yourself in the air after sprint-jumping! Space, Up arrow, or W to Jump. W/S to select an option, E to confirm. (Mouse on the first screen)

Robots are revolting! They released nanobots into the air to kill all humans! These nanobots eat at your insides, slowly taking away your senses. Once you run out, it's game over.

Goal: The goal is to stop the nanobots in the air from attacking humans, which will turn the tide of the revolution towards the favor of humanity. There's a switch on the map that will deactivate them, to keep it safe, the robots placed it in a high place. The main feature of the game is losing senses, so sorta Life is Currency? Oh well, I was focusing on the game before the theme!

Note: Getting hit by enemies or their shots will speed up the timer above your head! After being hit, you will be red, you are immune while you are red!

Everything was made by me, except the font "DS-Digital". A link can be found on my HTML5 version of the game.

TODOs: - Improve the aiming, the gun isn't aiming at the cursor exactly at the moment - Add a losing screen - Better story - Running sprite for the player - Shaders to make the game feel less flat.

This is such a cool concept, losing my right hearing, then my sanity, then color. I throughly enjoyed it and the music was nice. I also was very impressed with the hair falling down animation. Overall really cool!

Nice work! It's a good take on the theme with decent graphics (loved the hair when you fall), great job!

Lost faculties creep up on you fast. Impressed by how much level was available.

@tfdiaz Thanks for the review! I'm proud of the music, this LD was the first time I tried adding music, and I think it turned out well!

@landosystems Thanks for reviewing! I tried to separate my days into gameplay/graphics, and I think it payed off in the way the game looks. I think I'll be keeping this strategy in the future.

@vulpineblazeyt Thanks for the review! I wanted it to feel like a big futuristic city, and I'm glad to hear it feels that way.

Interesting concept! I like the 'v' hotkey. But it seemed impossible to reach the upper area, the jumps aren't long enough, even will full leg strength. But yeah, imagine a game like Deus Ex where the player has to deal with not only permanent upgrades to themselves but also the threat of permanent downgrades ... lots of potential! The shooting mechanic works nicely, but the jumps are slow and enemy bullets are spaced closely, so it doesn't seem realistic to dodge enemy fire. It would be nice if downgrades only take place when you're hit, since right now hits seem to be inconsequential.

5* in Graphics for that awesome falling animation i loved it xD
well nice idea and its kinda fitting anyway the theme with the part of losing "body parts" or special abilities. I like that kinda idea, that brings up a whole new gameplay element and brings some re playing value to your game.
I enjoyed your game.
nice music btw

@michaelsonbritt Thanks for playing and reviewing! I agree that there is no real way to play around the enemies, other than killing them before they hit you. As for what getting hit does, it simply reduces the timer to the next sense loss, I should have mentioned that somewhere!

@nico-fallosch Thanks for playing and reviewing! I'm glad people are enjoying the animations I made for the character, I felt like I spent way too much time on him, but it looks like it paid off.

Good job! Turning off sense is a really good idea.

In my opinion, in terms of theme and innovation that was just great. It was really funny to lose all my hearing abilities, but still, have voices in my had bugged me all the time  Unfortunately, in terms of gameplay it felt a little bit unfair because you have not much power to dodge bullets in those tine corridors.

@banzi Thanks for playing and reviewing!

@annie-owl Thanks for playing and reviewing! I agree that I should have put some time into ways to actually avoid the bullets, rather than just killing them before they can hit you. I wanted to add ducking, but never got around to it.

Interesting game! I liked the deterioration factor of the player character. Art and sound were nice too!
Gameplay was a little slow and I didn't find the way up to finish the game, because my time ran out too fast.
The combat mechanics were pretty much barebones. Was there even a health bar? I got hit by enemy bullets and turned red for a short perios of time, but other than that I didn't feel any consequences. Would've been nice to be able to duck or something to avoid oncoming bullets.

@duke Thanks for playing and reviewing! I do wish I could have made the combat more dynamic, but unfortunately I didn't get all of Monday to work on it. Next LD, I think I'll take it off! The consequence of getting hit isn't obvious for sure, but it just reduces the timer to the next sense/ability loss.

I really liked the premise and the groundwork is really solid! The downgrade dynamic is pretty nifty and well implemented. I had no issues with aiming at all, it felt really fluent und respondend! The graphics work well and the sound design is quite good!
After four tries I'm pretty sure I explored the entire reachable map, but sadly could not find I way to get higher up. Is it acutally possible to finish the game?

Nevertheless, nice entry!

@purrseus Thanks for playing and reviewing. I'm proud of the sound and art, as this LD I tried to put time into those! As for finishing the game, yes it is possible. You can hit 'V' to show the map. This isn't talked about in the instructions because it's told to you once you complete the game, so you can view the whole map. That should help you find the way to go!

Nice entry! I like the mechanism, and how it affects the interaction, especially losing color detection was surprising and cool!

I don't know why but it ran really slowly for me and kept making it hard to maneuver around the map so I was unable to finish. Otherwise it was still fun and with an interesting concept but definitely annoying for me.

@caveman54 Thanks for playing and reviewing! I'm sorry it didn't run well for you, it's probably because game maker isn't the most optimized engine! Glad you still had fun though!

Great job! Good balancing of gameplay - I wanted to keep going back to get further. And fun loss of abilities mechanic, though not sure how the completely connects to the theme. Nice work!

@dan-colman Thanks for playing and reviewing! I agree that theme is kinda loosely related, I got too focused on the gameplay and art!

Alright let's push you over the 20-review line! Nicely done! Reminds me of minit to some degree!
I like the idea of losing pieces of yourself, but they didn't really end up impacting gameplay all that much. Maybe something for the DLC!

@taqoshaq Thanks for playing, reviewing, and getting me over the 20 review point! I agree that the sense loss is more of a "cool" feature. The only one I tried to make affect gameplay was leg strength by reducing jump height, but that ended up making you not be able to finish the game! Definitely something to think about if I continue working on it. Thanks again!

After I realized the point of the game it was quite nice! Though, I have no idea how is it going to be beatable...

@hugimugi7 Thanks for playing and reviewing! I admit that I should have been more clear about how to finish the game. If you keep climbing up, you should find it. There's no need to kill all the robots!

Fantastic concept! I absolutely love how you can choose what sense/strength you should lose and the game reflected that. Really innovative. I really liked the retro graphics and audio too. Might just be me being rubbish at games but I did find it rather difficult and died easily. Maybe some sort of pick-up to give you some time back before your next punishment would make it a little easier and add some interest.
But really just a brilliant idea and so impressive for a 3 day game.

@beastiebeastie Thanks for playing and reviewing. I'm glad you enjoyed the art and music, I put a lot of time into those this time around. I agree the game can be difficult, and a time-increasing pickup would be a good idea. Thanks for the feedback.
