War Crimes

A game by Øivin Madsen about stealing oil with your tank

Untitled-2.png

  • Collect oil by destroying wells and other tanks :oil:
  • Return to base to sell oil for upgrades :rocket:
  • Be careful not to spend too much, as the oil doubles as your fuel :fuelpump:
  • Press ESC to pause (and mute the annoying music) :musical_note:

War crimes was made in significantly less time than the Compo allows due to a tight schedule. Unity was used for development, as well as Audacity, Blender, Photoshop, Substance Designer and Adobe Illustrator.

Featuring guest audio appearances from:

  • My fridge door
  • My microwave door
  • The annoying beep from my induction stove top
  • A bag of cereal
  • Off-brand coke

Some minor UX flaws, but I like the concept.
The shop should remind you that hitting spacebar also leaves the shop.. haha
I like the idea of growing stronger over time, and it gets easier to get oil the more upgrades you have. Etc, like a snowball effect.

Really good. It's a little bit laggy here, I think my pc is not that good, but I was able enjoy the game tho. Nice one.

@yuri-langowski Thank you! Yes well I didn't really optimize performance... When played in the browser I can imagine some lag when you and several enemies are shooting a hail of bullets simultaneously.

Straightforward game that plays well and is enjoyable! The upgrades are fun too. Nice visual effects with the bullets, and the sound effects were great! I wish the tank was a bit more mobile (faster, turned quicker) right from the beginning without needing upgrades.

I like the upgrade system a lot. Kept playing for a while. The graphics are jam-graphics but the shooter feel is on spot. I liked sound effects as well. Nice work for 48-hrs!

echoing comment above that "space closes shop" would have been a helpful line on the shop screen; also some minor 'nicety' features, like being a bit more generous with the trigger volume size for the fuel pickup so you can scoop fuel up while on the move a little more forgivingly (I found myself doing a little stop-start routine to grab fuel more than once) but getting into that level of nit-picking is only because the rest of the experience was otherwise really solid for a compo entry.

Graphics were a little barebones but more than functional, QoL features like an arrow pointing 'home' to fuel depot / shop were welcome and added to the overall sense of polish, and nice responsive and intuitive tank controls and sense of movement.

Overall the game felt like a reverse Desert Strike, heh

Not a big fan of the music tho

@spartacouscous Thank you for checking it out! Yes, the music was doubtlessly going to be annoying after a while, which is why I implemented the pause menu just for the player to be able to mute it heh.

Really enjoyable game. The gunplay was satisfying and the upgrade progression felt really good. Also really liked most of the sound effects except for the background engine drone which was a bit much.

Well done! The bullet / hit effects are very satisfying. I didn't find the music annoying but the humming of the engine started to bug me after a while. Overall a fun entry!

Really cool game, it's very impressive that you got this much done! I don't have much to add that others haven't already said, but I wish there was more feedback when hitting the oil wells as I wasn't sure if they were destructible at first. Overall great job, and I love your improvised sound effects!

Nice job. Audio is fitting and I didn't find it annoying, but I think the volume is a bit too low, had to raise my laptop volume a lot before I realized there was any sound at all.
It's a good starting point for a bigger project.

Nice upgrades system, though it took a while sometimes for tanks to spawn. I think it was balanced with overall with the upgrades, though tracking shots is always a bit difficult. Keep up the good work!

@aeveis Thank you for the feedback! The (rather naïve) thought was that the enemies would gradually spawn as the player was busy collecting oil from the oil wells, and then after being forced further and further out the spawn rate increases.

I'd say it was a great game for the amount of time you had!

Easy to get in the game, though AZERTY keyboards controls are not supported, and funny to play! The shooting system is great, sometimes a bit hard to aim correctly since you just use the tank visual, but there were nice feedbacks and simple but efficient fx (visual and sounds). I just did not really like the sounds, pure personal opinion!

Nice game, I liked playing it :)

Tank controls are solid and the whole game feels complete. The upgrades are fun and the UI is intuitive if simple. I kinda wish the whole experience was a little more arcade-y (faster tanks, bigger hitboxes, more bullets) because the art style seems to evoke that, but it was still fun. Great job!

simple but enjoyable game, i do think that the humming of the tank was bit load compared to the shooting but it is just a minor thing

Nice controls, only thing i found is needs to be some type of indicator of your hitpoints on the tank

this game got addicting! I just wish the tank was a bit faster but, that's just personal preference. Great job!

Good job. I like the usage of the theme.
Took me a while to find more tanks, I first thought the darker circle would be the end of the level.

UPGRAAAADES!! I liked getting stronger. It is a pretty steep curve in the beginning though. I found either no or to many enemies most of the time. Really impressive for 48 hours! Music was repetitive, but didn't annoy me at all. Awesome graphics and fx. Nice one :D

@fashionbatman @bitzawolf I realized that stupid me in my crunching managed to remove the function that scales the player speed by the frame timing. :face_palm: In other words, everyone who's played this will get different player speed based on their specific frame rate... That might explain why you thought the tank was slow.

good game, getting so powerfull upgrades made them worth getting and then being able to go further :dog: :dog:. nice to see clear indications on next lvl zones.
