BIRKANOID by MateCziner
Breakout/Arkanoid mixed with a cardgame. Instead of a paddle, you have a deck of cards you can use to control the ball in a semi-turn based manner.
Your goal is to clear all mooks from the level. But beware of the red one, it's gonna eat your balls!
CONTROLS
left | right - select card
up - play card
down - pause game
PLAY IN BROWSER
https://schrolab.itch.io/birkanoid

Please note: for some reason, the game might run slower in the browser than intended. If you experience choppy sound or FPS bellow 60, please consider downloading the executable or the cartridge for the best experience. I'm looking into the issue.
CHANGELOG
- fixed a bug the caused the ball to skip collisions
- optimized interpolated collision testing
- added an additional snipe card to the deck to allow more control
- added cartridge(source) and executable to downloads
- fixed bug that gave you the 1st level after the 8th
- made lvl 5 the default level when starting the game (this level was tested the most)
- halved the particle count on the browser version to make the framerate more stable

I did find it a little bit difficult to understand, but after playing a while, it got a lot better.
Great job!
I've chosen TIC because of the larger screen, flexible palette, and negligible restriction on code size.
The only area that wasn't so strong as the rest was the sound effects. Retro-sounds are a perfect fit for retro graphics, but some of them felt a bit rough and grating.
Congratulations for a great game! :)
I can just keep press Up button, then i have many balls on the screen, haha
Take a look on my game: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/vector-rabbits-slayer
btw, there seems to be some issue with the audio, where sounds stop for awhile and then a whole bunch play all at once, as if catching up to the gameplay. This may just be an issue with the engine though, so
I’d love for you to review my submission as well.

Also level 5 it's almost impossible try to play with strategy but it's really easy if you just start to spam cards. Thats because of the new ball cards, you continuiously add balls to the level so it's not easy to lose.
I loved this game, my favorite since I saw the first screenshot. Congratulations!

No noticeable bugs, and great graphics
:clap_tone1:
The underside is that even after understanding it I couldn't progress much. I tried to play it without spamming and it took so much time to pass stages. Maybe it's just me.
Keep up the work.
I rate your game, if I can give a game in my game, Witch's Escape.

Playing 5 levels and still can't understand some rules, and after I've completed level and move next - I got in random (?) level instead next. So I have to return back to start next level after which I have done.
The artwork was very well done. I liked the mechanic of playing cards to control the ball. I had to time when I played the card just right to create a useful move vs shoot off the screen. I also needed to plan out my moves because until I played all my cards I wouldn't get a new hand. This encouraged the player to use the cards wisely and not just spam the ones that seem good.
I didn't fully understand why some of the creatures were different colors and wore hats. Was this simply a visual indication that you needed to hit them more than once to defeat, or was there something more?
Thank you for making this game. It seemed very polished and professional. It was a joy to play.
you can get the TIC-80 console here: https://tic.computer/create
It does feel a bit random but I mean, that's the charm of Breakout. It also loses some of the breakout tension - juuust missing the red guy is not as satisfying juuust hitting the ball with a paddle.
I would prefer if the cards were plain movekits (not forcekits) and/or the balls completely stopped moving before I had to play my next card. No hard complains tho, good game
A.) spend time on features, polish, and general quality
B.) spend time on making and testing content.
In the end I decided to spend much more on A. Setting an additional lose condition would have required to test it with every level to ensure that they remain winnable. Since there was no time for that, I've decided to make the mechanics exploitable. This way the player can 'rubber band' if he/she gets frustrated while trying to solve a level.
This was just a more safe way to go as much as fun is concerned with the limits of the compo. But it's totally something to fix post jam.

Otherwise I had a lot of fun playing and it's always nice to see games made in fantasy computers :)
The game is very fun, I love the different levels, and it's a good balance between arcade and strategic choices. Congrats on this wonderful entry!
I guess success is a little based on luck, which kind of cards you get. Well, if you don't get the right ones, you'll just have to use up the cards you have, it should be possible, so I don't think that's a big issue in this case.
I found the game very hard without spamming the up key . Only reliable option I had against red blocks was to spam until I get more balls than there are red blocks.
Thanks for making this fun game! I enjoyed it a lot!
I left my rating of your game, if you can leave your feedback in our game, Witch's Escape.
I hope you continue with the project.

Sometimes I feel like I lost a ball without knowing why. At some other point, I killed every enemy present but wasn't claimed victorious.
Pretty well done, especially since it's a compo!
The game becomes crazy when you spam the cards.
