Charge! by dragonxvi

I'm back! This time with a little Pico-8 game! First Pico-8 thing I've actually 'finished' too!

PICO-83.gif PICO-84.gif

As you awake from stasis, you find your ship's autopilot has landed you on a derelict station. No human lifesigns for lightyears, but an automated message was picked up that states there is a stargate several light-years away to take you to the last bastion of human civilisation - Utopia!

But your ship is low on power and you're hungry and everything's really horrible. Can you scavenge enough supplies to reach the stargate before you die/run out of power/starve? Probably not! But good luck anyway!

It's a basic Roguelike where you have to scavenge derelict stations for supplies and avoid alien creatures. At any time you can enter your ship and take off to the next set of destinations, but this costs power, which must be salvaged from the stations. More distant stations tend to offer bigger rewards, but more risk and more power cost to reach.

Controls: - Arrows: Move char, select destination - Z: Interact (pickup thing, enter ship, confirm destination) - X: Cancel (close destination screen)

Hints: - Blobs and Hackwings will ignore you so long as you stay out their way - Solar Farms have a tonne of power to loot. - Find upgrades for your equipment quickly! Military Bases always have Weapons or Armor, but also have short range turret defences on site. - If you use health kits at full health, you'll increase your max health! - Don't starve! Habitats often have frequent food, otherwise you'll have to hunt monsters! - Weapons in order of power are: Fists, Crowbar, PBlade, Pistol, Rifle - Armor in order of strength are: Suit, Lt. Armor, Med. Armor and Hv. Armor. There's supposedly some rare experimental suit that supposedly regenerates health too! - Oh and don't pick up equipment that's a downgrade because it'll immediately destroy your current equipment because I was too lazy to implement dropping :p - No music! Didn't have time!

Happy trails!

One of the best games I've found so far! Love the replayability, though I didn't quite know about the hunger thing, so when it started to say that I was starving I started freaking out! Anyway, love the graphics and the gameplay, you did a great job!

Beautiful game, you really took PICO8 to its limits there :-) I loved the windows, really nice touch there.

I loved the sound effects, and the different monsters.

At one point, though, I found one part of a station opening into space and I could... just walk through it. Bug?

Wow, excellent! I haven't beaten it yet, so i can't yet comment on the difficulty, but this is really fun! My only comment is common to pico8 games with extremely detailed sprite work - i sometimes have trouble differentiating walls from floors and other details - everything is so shaded it is hard to tell. The game is gorgeous though. Bravo! Probably the single most polished entry i've played yet.

Sometimes a room didn't have walls and I could wander out into space. Besides that, it was pretty cool. Really gives you a feeling of exploration.

Fun little roguelike, I'm enjoying the vision mechanics (reminds me of the old BYOND games). It's pretty funny watching the monsters accidentally kill one another, free food is always nice. :stuck_out_tongue:

There's a surprising amount of complexity and variation in this, and I'm surprised that I'm liking it despite my usual dislike of rouguelikes. The graphics are great, I'm surprised you could do all this on the PICO-8 in just 48 hours!

There are some oddities (like the map occasionally letting you wander out into space), and it's entirely possible to get enough energy that you can skip the last few levels (I did, since the Zydd were kicking my ass!). It's an excellent entry though, great work!

I'm surprised. A lot of these Ludum Dare games are a chore to play, but this game is legitimately enjoyable. I might even keep playing it later! Also the pixel art is glorious.

Fun adventure, but unfortunately died because I downgraded to a crowbar by accident (thought it was an upgraded crowbar or something) and got caught by an enemy I could no longer damage as a result. This issue aside, however, the game itself shines nicely.

Roguelikes are not my type so I won't comment on this of course, except that I nonetheless enjoyed the game for a while. The work you put on this is obvious, tremendous job you've done for 48 hrs! Feels quite polished. Maybe the background sprites could have been a bit simpler for legibility. Nice details too, like moving stars in background, or the avatar jumping between tiles instead of just moving tile by tile.

Lovely graphics! I included it in my Ludum Dare 39 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Upb0aA4TPRk

I love this game!

I haven't had that during this Ludum Dare yet.
This rogue-like is very engaging and, more importantly, has an identity of its own.

Graphics are very good. My only gripe with them is that the "dirty door tiles" are not very clear. You easily walk past them, mistaking it for ooze, or debris. But perhaps that was your intention huh.

Sounds are good and music would've been a nice extra, but I consider the game engaging without it.

Is there a way to attack diagonally? The enemies can, but I'm not sure the player can.
Perhaps one could hold z or x and pres two arrows to do this.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a game to finish.

Usually I'm not in rogue-like, but this one is very addicting ! I like the art and the story ! However, I think I've found a generation bug, at some point I found myself into deep space… Or is it a giant room with transparent walls ? :D

Utterly incredible. I also made a roguelike, but I'm much more impressed with yours! :-)

Sound design, art, gameplay, polish, it's all there. Excellent job.

(I had to guess that your ldjam.com username was the same as your lexaloffle username to find this page btw! Might want to link it from the PICO-8 page.)

I don't know how you've managed this in 48 hours but it looks and plays brilliantly...

No I haven't finished it yet, and I find it's very hard to get armor/weapon, but I might come back later to play this after the LD ends.

One of the best LD39 games I've played so far, thanks.

Your graphics is an art! I love these sounds and everything, small resolution, 8bits. Idea is fine too, thank you for this game :)

very interesting game.

graphics/sprites could use some stronger differentiation so that it would be easier to tell what you are looking at.

That was pretty great! Loved the style, especially the visibility and splatters of blob guts. I played twice, both times ran into a Gizoid which I apparently could only hit for 0 damage, and apparently he could move diagonal and I could not, so he destroyed me with no escape :(.

Great game, very engaging with stellar artstyle and amazing terrain-generation for a game jam game. There are a few bugs, like a room that leads to empty space. In terms of feedback, A map would have been nice, and I don't know if this is intended or not but you shouldn't be able to accidentally downgrade your equipment.

Amazing work especially for such a short time frame. Love the graphics, I enjoyed the simplicity of the controls. I got super hyped up when I killed my first antagonist, but I might have liked a bit more instruction since I really didn't understand what to do with the equipment or what all I was looking at. Over all a delightful game!

This was awesome! Great job. The art and music complimented the game play. The whole project felt cohesive and nothing was really out of place.

Nice job. You did well.
Every thing looked great while playing. And it's really good that the game has its own level-editor.

I also found a bug. when I traveled to the 3rd map, the map ended in a place and I was in the space. The enemies were in the space too. I guess the game didn't generate a part of it. but it was not a big deal. It's still a good game.

I am really impressed by the game. The low-resolution graphics hide a very polished game: animation, gameplay, UI, candy-eye, donjon generation, feedbacks... Everything is made with taste and focus on details. Fun and well made. I want a 16-bit version of it;-)

I can't believe that you made a good roguelike in 48 hours! The game was challenging, but a little too easy after I understand the basics. The graphics are very nice, with effective animations, but some became a little unrecognizable, named as Gizoid.

"Oh and don’t pick up equipment that’s a downgrade because it’ll immediately destroy your current equipment because I was too lazy to implement dropping :p", this kills me after almost 30 minutes of play... Just a block for weaker equipments will be enough!

Awesome entry for compo and one of bests of this Ludum Dare!

And I guess that I found a bug:

EDIT: Oh! Now I realized that more players found out this glitch.

So awesome! I loved this!

Some minor complaints:
- Downgrading weapons/armor blahblahblah yeah you didn't have time to implement it
- The map screen only shows 3 different destinations but you can pick between 4?
- If you don't have enough power to get to any of the destinations you're...screwed. Maybe that's ok by design though.

Really though, this was great fun, inspires me to do something in pico-8 too! Well done :)
