LD48.Claustrophobia by deformhead

[raw]
made by deformhead for LD 42 (COMPO)

splash-640x512@1x.png

Welcome ! Claustrophobia (Ludum Dare 42 Theme: Running out of space) is built in plain HTML5/JavaScript (62ko compressed) with a framework I am developping.

Rules :

  • each step cost 1 life
  • life lost shrinks your vital space
  • bombs are dangerous...
  • commands : arrow keys

I'd like to :

  • add sfx (with a "buzzz" increasing when the noisy shadow shrinks)
  • add explosion effects when a bomb hits the player
  • add some monologues in each level to add real depth to the chlaustrophobic effect
  • add much more levels
  • add mobile inputs support

This was my first Game Jam, so I hope you'll like this game. Thank you for your support.

Really clever puzzle game, is the movement of the enemies random?

Awesome art, and a fun little memory-puzzle game! Would be kind of fun to try this on a level with 20 moves in it :P Also, this is really awesome stuff for a first game jam :)

Nice art style and good execution. Only critique would be maybe add to the enemy sprite a graphical indicator so we can tell exactly what direction they are facing :) Great work!

Really nice pixel art, animations and color palette :) ! The atmosphere is also very nice... I love how the screen is all tiny giving that claustrophobic feeling, as well as how the field of view of the player gets smaller and smaller ! There were no sounds though (is that just me ?)... All in all well done :) !

LOVE the game!, neat mechanic, remind me of super hot, love the gameboy green aesthetic, and also the pixel art helps the atmoster a lot !, honestly i dont get the "claustropphobic" aspect of it, while the area indeed getting smaller but in my gameplay its irrelevant, the "super-hot" like puzzle is brilliant tho

Quick to pick-up and play, it has a lovely simplicity to it that all LD games should embrace! It's certainly something I myself struggle to pull off! You've done a great job for your first jam! Congratulations

@noa-calice Didn't had time to make the sound, sadly...

@biodiesel Yes, each enemy has a specific pattern.

@nnnikki Yes, I'd like to.

I'd like to :

- add sfx (with a "buzzz" increasing when the noisy shadow shrinks)
- add explosion effects when a bomb hits the player
- add some monologues in each level to add real depth in the chlaustrophobic effect
- add much more levels

Short and sweet, the Game Boy graphics are *perfect* (I tried it myself, but I'm not really great at drawing, I need to train more). The pixel are is really cute!
Some sounds and music would really pull everything together!

Very clever little game!

The tight camera did make discovering and memorizing the enemy patterns better.

Even while it had a great mood, some music and sound effects would have really helped as well.

Major props for using your own engine as well..!!

Great tutorial and all;
The only main problem (or counter-point to the popular opinion) I see is that it's more of a memory game vs puzzle game: there's no way to see how bombs will behave other than get killed and remembering their pattern. Essentially, we're punished for not knowing, rather than not thinking.

Great game! The graphics were really nice. I really liked it, thus it almost felt too short and left me hoping for more. I agree that it's more of a memory game, but that's totally fine by me! Awesome job :)

14. Aug 2018 · 07:58 UTC
Good entry! I liked the graphics because of the gameboy palette and the subtle flicker animation on the light. The gameplay was solid if a bit random (playing didn't feel a lot like I was solving a puzzle as much as just figuring out the correct order of moves, but maybe that in itself was the puzzle lol). A bit of sound and atmosperic music would really complete the mood you were setting. Overall, good first entry and props on not using an engine.

Only missing a few sounds and it would be great.

Great game, I love the art and overall style! I think the game might benefit from having an indication of where the enemies are going to move on their next turn, as it is currently difficult to tell. Something like a small X over a tile that an enemy will move onto the next turn would help make the puzzles rely less on trial and error.

Beautiful graphics, really gave me some early gameboy nostalgia. The game was fun to play, but it was rather easy to complete. My only complaint is that I wanted more, but I suppose that's not really a bad thing. A bit more polish in the sound/music department would have helped a lot, but otherwise a great game. Thank you for sharing it.

14. Aug 2018 · 21:49 UTC
Yeah, I agree with the above that sound is really missing, but the game is really well made with some really tight level design. This can easily be expanded into a much more advanced game as well. Well done!

i like this game. it looks very good, the concept is really innovative, and the game overall is really fun. at first, i was confused why i lost lifes, but you made the area in a way nobody will get stuck, since your only option is to go down, and in this first room you learn everything you have to know about the game. the only problem of this game is that every enemy looks the same, but moves in a differend pattern.if they looked a bit differend, this game would be even better. good work!

Nice take on the theme! It was short but very enjoyable (I really liked that you had to take enemy paths into account while caring for your own limited life), with great visuals. Some sound would have been the icing on the cake. Congrats!

Beautiful game in both art and mechanics. At first I wasn't sure if I enjoyed the trial by error method of determining enemy movements, but the game loop is so fast that its not frustrating at all. Very nice!

16. Aug 2018 · 19:52 UTC
The incorporation of the theme was not great in my opinion. I mean, you achieved this by making it a small screen, but that is kind of a shallow artistic thing, I prefer the theme to be incorporated in game play. And you game play is more like 'running out of moves' kind of. With that out of the way, this game is actually awesome! Super fun to play with really neat art style. It is very unfortunate that you couldn't make more levels, I would definitely be interested in playing an extended version.

18. Aug 2018 · 06:42 UTC
Art is great, though I see you aren't being rated on graphics, so did you not make the graphics yourself? If not you should really put some credits in the description for who made the art. I think a little bit of music here would have gone a long way, even if just some ambient sounds (like a fire crackling or something). I would have really liked some sort of indicator on the bombs as to which way they were going to move, or you could put some lines on the ground showing their path. As is the levels turned out to be a bit more trial and error than I normally like for a puzzle game. That is just nitpicking though. Solid entry.

Have fun out there!

18. Aug 2018 · 07:51 UTC
That's a cool game but it seems you disabled the "graphics" category for voting, too bad, because it greatly participate to make the mood of the game (which is very well).

18. Aug 2018 · 07:58 UTC
@phlip45 Nope, I did all by myself.

@phlip45 @sebbernery The goal of this first jam was more a challenge to myself and the framework I am developing rather than win the competition. I picked few old spritesheets of mine, created new ones for the jam. To respect the rules, I didn't wanted to be rated on my graphics. :)

Interesting mechanic, great art style and pretty good execution overall. Wish there was sound and perhaps some kind of indication where the bombs are going. Now it is kind of a trial and error game rather that a puzzle. But for the first game jam game, this is outstanding! Congratulations!

22. Aug 2018 · 12:54 UTC
I agree I am not feeling running out of space even with the game supposed to invoke claustrophobia, I think sound would add a lot. Felt a lot like pokemon for the art style. It was overall fun, but I am a big component of sound adding atmosphere, which this game was definitely trying to invoke and I bet it was just a time thing. Like for me adding animation was difficult.

Awesome game! I beat the game, it's short and sweet, and not too hard. For a post jam version, I'd love to hear some music. Also, I think it would be nice if the mechanics of the bombs were more predictable, right now it feels like I randomly move until I figure it out.
