Your Very Own Vampire Garden by tc4mpbell

[raw]
made by tc4mpbell for LD34 (COMPO)
Your goal: Create the MOST POPULAR vampire-owned garden ever!

Click to plant! ($1)
Hire vampires for your garden! ($10/day, +1 fear)
Avoid a reputation for being a place of murder! (Priceless)

Visitors pay $5 per plant viewed. MORE will visit the more popular your garden is.

Popularity is based on a COMPLEX FORMULA based on number of healthy plants and amount of fear surrounding your garden.

Fear is increased by recruiting a vampire gardener. Since in this case "recruiting" means biting and murdering someone and condemning them to an eternity as a low-paid vegetarian vampire gardener. Rumors will spread.

Notes:
- bugfix update that keeps the plants from always dying, despite the best efforts of the gard'ners.

I pretty much kept playing until the lag became so great that I had to stop, I had a fairly decent garden going in the mean-time though!

Fun game. Enjoyed the mechanics and trying to work out how to optimise my popularity. Got quite slow though towards to end and for some reason my gardeners couldn't get to further away sections of my garden before it opened.

People stopped coming to my garden, but at least I had an army of 50 vampires :D

Fun little game, but it gets very laggy.

The game itself is pretty fun, but the main problem is, that timing and gamelogic aren't just decoupled, but completely separated. Because of that, the program executes less cycles during day/night, when the load gets heavier. Tham means, that vampires and visitors move less spaces and interact with fewer plants. After some time the game basically comes to a full stop, because either the customers cant reach plants to give you money or plants die off, bacause vampires cant reach them.
If you could fix that issue, the game would be really fun. In fact the first days (before "lag" kicks in) are really fun!
Nice work!

I like the day night cycle! It's similar to my Clickacabra game from last jam and it provides a nice flow to the game. Animations are hilarious and it's really cool to see the different NPCs running around. It's not very satisfying to play for too long though since there's not much feedback to your actions (either visually or gameplay-wise).

Cute idea, but performance became an issue pretty quickly (~7 gardners?). Could also use more depth.
