The gameplay and movement is nice, finding the altar can be very tedious sometimes, especially with how slow your character runs. Sometimes when I get hit the screen starts nonstop shaking and it hurts my eyes. Other than that it's a good concept and I hope you do well in the jam!

@luqey Thanks for the feedback, I just fixed the infinite screen shake bug.

Nice game and concept, though the map can sometimes seems a little empty and it's kinda difficult to figure out what are some of the rewards at the end of each screens without a box description or something like that.

Well done!

The only thing missing is an indicator or something pointing at the altar, and the enemies probably should follow the player from further away. Great game overall.

I like graphic and player movement. I think dash can be from the start and not as upgrade. Because it's a little bit boring from the start.

Amazing game/graphics, would be nice to have some more player feedback like when you get a reward what is it and so on and maybe a small tutorial at the start would help some players. Great work and love has been put in this project. i hope you enjoyed partaking in ludum dare and cant wait to see what you come up with next.

Enjoyable! I like the fact that your rate of fire is only limited by how fast you can click. Though it didn't bring me much comfort when the levels repeatedly spawned me surrounded by antlerbats. The good thing is that's the only real problem I had with the game! Some of the art is quite nice too, like the altar and the UI. The numbers for the blood and health counters could be more easily readable, but that's the sort of finetuning you can do post-jam if you so decide. Good work overall!

It's a nice game! But I see a few mistakes here and there.

The first that jumped to me is the pew pew sound. The mood of the game is rather grim with sacrifices, blood and bats... and we get a basic pew pew. It felt out of place to me. The music is nice though! Simple but nice.

Second is the respawn after making a sacrifice. I got killed on spawn several times before even getting to see the screen! At first I thought the upgrade killed me. You need to make enemies spawn at a reasonable distance from the player, at least almost a screen. This can even be considered a bug as it prevented me from playing the game.

Third, I don't really know how I did this but at one point after getting an upgrade I got a second instance of the music playing over the first. Make sure you can't call the music several times at the same time in your code :)

Overall I liked the graphics, the animations and the idea a lot but there are a few mistakes in execution. Thank you very much!

I was struggling with trying to understand how to start up the altar... besides that, a fun little game!

Really nice and simple game. I had much fun playing it, but every time when I choose the upgrade, I spawn in the middle of 5 bats and just die in 2 seconds. Also a little bit of explanation text near upgrades would be nice - couldn't figure out what they do just by simple icons. Would play a lot more times if would not face the spawn-among-bats issue ;)

Really cool concept! I liked the mechanics and how easy it was to pick up. The graphics are amazing - I really like the details you put into the game; it even has moving shadows! One issue that I found though was that I'd spawn the next level inside a group of bats and get an insta-death. It was fun to play though!

fun game, I like the main character, there is just enough there that he looks and feels cool... in the beginning i enjoyed matching my mouse clicks to the beat of the song..

a few nitpicks
1- It was confusing how I was supposed to interact with the altar, i was spamming key presses trying to figure out what to do... a little "e" notifier would have helped a lot... this led to later issue where i noticed the sword in the top right thinking maybe thats an ability, so i started spamming more key presses, "r" was one of them and I lost all my progress, eeeeeek.....

2- Almost all of the damage i took in game was upon spawning in after a sacrifice, the creatures spawned too closely to me and I was not prepared so I would lose 1-2 hp, which felt unfair....

3- this one is more nitpicky than the last, but it was unclear to me what my upgrades where in the altar.... a little text description would have helped...

I like the artwork as a whole, the trees where beautiful just swapping out the colors on them added quite a bit to the world... the altar was pleasing to look at, and the main character, as a white tail hunter I am a sucker for things with antlers, so i loved the little guy... This was one of the games i spent more time in...

Nice Game!

I enjoyed that. There are a lot of smaller issues but the game itself controlled good and the base core is really solid. Most of the hits I got were sadly from enemys spawning direcly next to. Also the altar mostly spawned on the very edge of the map. Overall searching for the altar is not enjoable in itself. An indicator would be great.
If you plan on working more on this game I would wish for more escalation in ability strengt and variety. Right now the difficulty felt static. I think the enemys got a little bit more health with each stage, but that is not enough to keep it interesting.

Very enjoyable game. Music is nice and catchy
At first i didn't realize that i have to press E on the altar (maybe you should put a little tooltip when the character walk near the altar)

Cool idea! I like the animations for your sprites, and the color scheme. Enemies came at a nice regular pace to keep me moving and searching around the game. I never found the altar. It felt like I shouldn't be able to run through the trees, but then I did and there were no collisions on them.

The idea is cool and the graphics and audio are good but the levels feels unbalanced: you spawn with many enemies really near so it is a challenge to survive them and then you just run in a nearly empty map.

I think that if you fix this problem of spawn/rest of the map, you can have a great game

Lovely animations you got there! I kinda agree whit everyone else: the game feels a bit slow due to the fact that the altar spawns in random location and you have to find it yourself. Some harder enemies or such are usually easy to implement and they add so much in gameplay wise. Solid entry tho, good job!

The animations and sounds look cool. The backgrounds and characters are cute, well made nice looking pixel art. I can't seem to find the altar lol. But wow that death animation looks cool. Great job and thanks for sharing! Oh i think the sound effects for shooting could be better, it sounds too cute for a demonic type game.

This was nice, but I think you could have done more with the sacrifices, since the way it is implemented right now, you only have to kill stuff and proceed to the altar. Maybe the players health and the blood should be the same thing, then the sacrifice would be meaningful.

Nice entry.

@cr0wns Thanks for the feedback We realized that the finding of the altar can be quite boring, so in the post jam version we gave the player a compass 😄

Pros:
- I love simple pixel art, and yours is :)
- Background music is simple but works and again thats what I like :)

Cons:
- In the game is not clear what to do, expect shoot down bats. I dont know how exactly sacriface that blood and get upgrades
- In the browser is wiered streched and my browser shows scrollbars for X and Y and it looks terrible.

Overall:
In my opinion if you invest more time in explanation of the game mechanics it will helps most of players of your game. Because without read I dont know what to do expect shoot down these bats. (Yes I did same mistake in my game but I make compo :D) But audiovisual of the game is good, and better the most of LD entry.

The controls respond nicely and the pixel art is amazing. I find a bit complicated to locate the altar sometimes, and the rewards could have a hint text indicating what they would upgrade, sometimes the icon was not enought for me. Also, a click and hold shoot would be really helpful.

These aspects, however, doesnt compromise the game, and the experience still really fine.

Good job.

Art is great. Animations are very good, especially the crow man. I know how tedious making pixelart is, so you are real heroes for doing it that good.

Sadly, I can't say much about the gameplay. I really wanted to enjoy the game, but HTML version has too many technical problems (can't say if windows build have them as I only have linux pc), one of them in particular didn't let me pass the first altar - it seems that there is a memory leak, as after some time playing tab in browser just freezes. Happened to me many times, had to completely reopen them.
Also, after reload my max health dropped to 2. I don't know if thats by design, I've noticed that maxhealth is set randomly after restarts, but 2 is too little.
And a small thing you could've fixed - player shoots at mouse press without any cooldown, so you can cheat with mouse button that does multiple presses.

Overall, I wish you good luck with next entries as you look like you can make something outstanding. Just pay more attention to technical side of the game.

@vlandemart Thanks for the feedback, the weird bugs seem to have come along with the update we uploaded today(the jam version is downloadable) to html as they aren't present in the windows version. After some testing I believe it's the particle system memory leak and I hope to get a working version online by the end of the week.

There is also no reload button in the game, "R" restarts the game... your health is indeed random, (lower health = more attack power and more health = less attack power).

Edit: I think the bug is fixed, but if you encounter it again please let me know :)

Fun game, crashed on me a few times. I like your main character and art design/direction, definitely looking forward to a more stable build now that the competition is over.

@jfraser314, @royur The bug that crashed the game has been found, it was an infinite loop in the mage code. If you want to play a more stable build, its on the itch.io page
