Be Yourself by Noa Calice

[raw]
made by Noa Calice for LD 40 (COMPO)

The rules are VERY simple : rotate your character with the left and right arrow keys... and at all costs, avoid having squishy looking black slimes stick to you. Because the more you have glued to your character, THE WORST THINGS GET !!!

You can of course use the golden slimes to DESTROY black ones...

The message in this little game is to always be ourselves, to not let society, opinions and judgements warp who we truly are !

The game includes character customization !

screen06.png

A rather deep message...

screen08.png

And fast paced, reflex based gameplay !!

Hey ! Thanks all for the feedback !! The difficulty increases each time you have a slime get stuck to you ! That's the reason why it can increase so fast :) !

For a second there i thought Tower of Goo is back! It's fun, I just wish the orange balls frequency was higher or that my character was a bit smaller in diameter!

The intro is freaking awesome with the cards aesthetics! 5/5 :D

Very cool simple concept.
Really well executed and a cool art style that reminds me of World of Goo, Gish (and other McMillen art).

It's pretty hard, maybe it is nice to have a short speed up time at the beginning of a spin for more precise control.

04. Dec 2017 · 13:55 UTC
Really cool game, I made it to 87 on my last try. I think the key is collecting as many yellow blobs while eating all the black blobs at the start, since once you start getting 5+ black blobs stuck on to you (and block your eating holes) it gets hectic really fast. It's a really fun game! Art quality is really high up there, and the sound effects fit the game really well. Music is a little bit repetitive but other than that it's a solid experience. Well done!

This was a good take on the theme and a fun game. The progression was a little slow - I reached a point where I could pretty much balance out the negative blobs with the orange ones.

Great use of theme!

It's nice to see someone attempt a bit more 'deep'/'meaningful' during LD

The music, shuch as it is, was ... distracting, I mean, I get that it's probably the _point_, given the message, but still.

The comic was nicely done, altough in my present post LD-state, I sat there for about half a minute before I realized I was supposed to click through

I dig the concept, but I had troubles with the game, because my screensize is too small for it, so I had to react very fast to incoming balls. The neat characters are obviously the strong suit of the game and the audio puts stress on the player.

04. Dec 2017 · 20:31 UTC
Solid idea, was a bit overwhelming at times for a proper reaction, maybe scaling things down 50% could help.

However the polish from the intro, rules, main menu, about me, are all great. And solid truthful message, good work!

This game is really damn addictive! It's fast paced and I love it. The character customization, as weird as it sounds, extended the playtime for me, because I wanted to see all characters ^^. And man... does this game escalate fast. You can usually pinpoint the EXACT moment of fuck-up at which everything starts going south. It's quite a challenge and feels really good if you manage to get a huge streak of blob-blowups. One critique: the blobs coming from the side travel further than the blobs from the top and the bottom. This makes it so you have less time to react to those. I think a squared playing field might make more sense for this kind of game. Amazing job nonetheless, did I also mention that I really enjoy the graphics? Well, I do!

HA, I MADE IT TO 100 (barely). PRAISE THE SUN.

I don't think it ramps up too quickly, given that it scales with how many of the baddies are attached to you. It makes coming back from a few mistakes an interesting struggle and it had me on my toes quite often, but never felt unfair.
Also, of course the graphics are gorgeous.

I also like how you attached an interesting message to your game. All in all, cool stuff!

Wow, very cool game. The graphics are great, the game is fun, the audio works well. Hard to give constructive feedback on this. :-P Really nailed it. I guess it is a bit hard as is and I can't predict the incoming globs far enough ahead to do much about it. I would say either add arrows pointing to incoming directions or make the sprites smaller? Just a thought. Could also have the ball head follow the mouse. I feel that the arrow keys movement is too slow and has difficultly landing accurately compared to mouse movements. I'd probably do a lot better and have more fun if the head just followed the mouse instead. But that is only really if I'm forced to be critical. Awesome game, top ratings all around!

Anyways, my Compo game is over here, if you want to have a look. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/squirrel-puncher-4000

Pretty nice game. Could use some musics though. Also, i find it pretty hard to react quickly when the black thing appears from the top. It messes me up so bad. Maybe an indicator is pretty nice? And also controls using mouse would be nice, since it's hard to know how fast the character will turn when i press the arrow button.

A neat idea executed well with polish. I really enjoyed the feel of the user interface elements. My only suggestion would be to add some squish and bounce to the slimes when they hit you along with some slime particles. That would take it to the next level I thing. It is really well done.

This reminds me of an Edmund McMillen joint what with the mechanics and aesthetic that almost seem like a cry for help and the tongue-in-cheek humor and child like approach to fun in the mechanics.

Pros:
- I love the fact that you can pick a character even though it has no bearing on the gameplay. Its just so fitting for this game
- The best kind of mix of "personal and artistic" and "video-gamey"
- Addictive (I could see this selling well on tablets and mobile.

Cons:
- Maybe make it a bit more obvious when the black gooey goes go into those holes? I did not understand at first when they were sticking. Just an animation would be nice.

Keep up the good work!

awesome, unique entry! i love the idea, but can't help but nitpick a few things. the audio (music, sfx) could definitely be a lot better, and the game becomes almost impossible much too quickly. a more forgiving difficulty curve and perhaps some more content would help a lot. aside from all that, i thought the art style and visuals were fantastic! i agree with everyone else about the Edmund McMillen thing. good work!

In my opinion, the gameplay is barely related to the story. What I mean is that the mood of the story is pretty different than the mood of the gameplay. This made the story about the being yourself not feel too intriguing. However, I did like the creepy music though. The gameplay was alright and polished enough.

Definitely getting a McMillen (Time Fcuk) meets World of Goo vibe as far as the aesthetics are concerned. The main premise is kinda idea is pretty cool and seems quite dark, actually.

Mechanically, it plays nicely, although the difficulty curve seems to go up way too quickly. After about 20, the spawn rate just gets nuts. Maybe, the safe/destroy areas could be bigger at first and gradually shrink as it goes on? I could also be a bit more zoomed out, as I felt I had very little time to react, which might be by design, but I just felt a little more space would still pose a reasonable challenge.

But considering this was actually done in 24 hours, this's really well polished.

Neat concept, sort of like a 2D Katamari Damacy. I couldn't figure out how to increase the orange star score. The faces were cute and I like the variety of selectable faces. Sometime I wish I had a little more time to react, so maybe a warning about where next black blobs will come from would help.

20. Dec 2017 · 12:12 UTC
I really liked the art (gave a bit of an Edmund McMillen feel, especially his last game 'The end is nigh').

Regarding the mechanics the game is a bit unbalanced because the screen is rectangular so when a ball comes from the up/down axis it's way harder to react then if it comes from left/right. Maybe if the screen was square it would be a bitt better (or just the balls come from a circle around the player).

The menu music was actually pretty cool, but the in game music was repetitive very quickly and the sfx of the balls could be annoying sometimes especially some times in end game where it would make loop the sound for a few second.

I think the game could use a bit more feedback and/or mechanics (if you intend to continue working on it that is).

This kind of gameplay isn't really my thing but overall it was a really cool game, nice job !
