Health Hazard by PeculiarCarrot

[raw]
made by PeculiarCarrot for LD 40 (COMPO)

Avoid the red balls, get the yellow ball I guess, if you want more health. But the more health you have, the more hazardous things get. Hmm. Quite the dilemma.

"Help, my health bars aren't loading! Or the game is kinda laggy/won't load!" If you have Windows, download the Windows .zip. The experience is a lot smoother, trust me.

Very fun and innovative! :-) It's very difficult from the beginning though and the controls feel a little clunky, took me a couple of tries to get even past the third wave ;) Great Job altogether!

This is a solid game. Gets hard pretty quickly. Those chiptunes are rockin'!

I'm surprised at how much fun I found myself playing this. Honestly, give it some upgrades, some different level layouts, all those shenanigans and you have a nice, casual, relaxing (anxienty inducing) game!

Wave 7 on first try, but gets hard really quick, which is a good thing as it is still fun! Great audio.

I like the aesthetic to the game, sound effects and music is good as well. Cool mechanic with level of difficulty being determined by health. Nice job.

Wow, this is great! I really like the squash and stretch in the player's jump animation.
I think that the difficulty might scale better if it changed the duration of each wave as opposed to the number of balls. There were a few times that it seemed like there wasn't really any possible way to avoid anything, so maybe after some number of balls spawn there could be a delay between each next one?
Anyway, it was very fun, definitely one of my favorites that I've played so far.

Simple looking, but challenging game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 40 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) [I fixed this video to have proper audio!]

Simple and awesome. Great game. Only thing I'd add is maybe more yellow balls when your life is low, just so you can get to those higher levels to see how crazy it can get, or let us start with more lives.

Quite noice ! The feedback on the square, the little mario-like jump noises, the physics of the balls... Those are really good ! You say you're new to Unity but you should check my game to see what's the difference between good news and bad news :P

Else, about the game, I really liked the chiptunes, and the sound design in general : It's neat that you got an option menu to put the sounds effects lower. I'm just a little disappointed in the general rythm, it's personal tastes but I prefer when things are even more nervous, even if the game has a good difficulty raise :) Nice and efficient !

A very challenging game!

I love how you've managed added personality and style to something as simple as a square. I wish I was better at dodging the hazards; although I did find that it was easier to wait for the hazards to settle down a bit (not jumping all over the place) before I try to collect the health.

So glad to see a minimalist block with squash and stretch, if you had the block lean when moving side to side it would be perfect. It was simple and challenging, and the physics of the balls added to the randomness of it all. Great work!

The jelliness of the player square was cute, it reminded me of Thomas Was Alone. Also very TWA in that it felt alive despite being so minimal. Interesting use of the theme too.

Very great presentation, and a tight gameplay loop. Speed up the time between rounds and this would be way more addictive than it already is.

Love the challenge and the visual style. Sure not much was done with the visuals so I can't rate it too high but the squishy animations and trail renders really made it stand out even though they are such simple things. Good work on that.

As for performance, we need to talk about that. It ran well, and that's too well. Either movement speed is timed to frame-rate, or your have it set wayyyy too high. It's a great game but it's one that needs fine control. If it was just too easy with slower movement speeds, make more red balls.|

Music was great too. I wasn't even expecting sound but I was pleasantly surprised. The game also fit the theme really well with a take I haven't quite seen yet in my ratings journey!

Simple, but very addictive little game! I absolutely love the elastic jump animation. I would recommend turning on Anti-Aliasing next time you make a game with this abstract style of graphics, makes it look a bunch better!

Very solid game, so fun to play! Square... I mean character control feels so nice  Also, nice difficulty curve, getting so hard once the player catches the goal of the came. In general, great job! :D
