Christmas Present by Jons games

6.png To be everywhere at once, Santa must have some real magical powers.

Christmas Present is a game where you have to help Santa collect all his presents before Christmas. The problem is, they are scattered all over the place. Using Santas powers, you can collect presents from different locations at the same time.

Move around with WAD or the arrow keys. You can click between the opened popups to take control of Santa.

https://youtu.be/afv72EAbZCQ There are 6 levels in total, and by the end, you will be playing all of them at the same time. Each level you complete helps you complete the next, as Santa can exist in the same position across each level window.

4.png

It's a bit hard to describe, so just have a go playing it!

NOTES This game uses popup windows to play the game in. Each level is a different popup that you play in at the same time. You might get a popup blocker warning, and it'd be great if you allow popups for the domain while playing, otherwise the game doesnt work!

Its' been found that Christmas Present struggles to run on a secondary monitor due to how the popup positioning works, so make sure you play it on your main monitor!

Doesn't work. All I see is a floating present once I hit play. What did I do wrong?

This game is great! It's a very interesting concept i've not seen before. The only thing letting down the gameplay is a wobble on the game screens while you're moving but you can oversee that.

It is a little lacking for the theme though. I'm guessing the idea is that the other santas get in the way when you have a lot but I feel like getting bigger only helps you.

@wskilljoy A popup launches when you press play with the game in it. It might have popped up behind the main window? Some browsers do that by default.

I really love this game.
The idea is very cool and I love the animations and sounds of santa.
I did get stuck though.
Good game.

This is a very interesting idea, but I think it needs a little more work. As Kieran said above, the theme here is a little lacking, and after the first level I seemed to be stuck? Or maybe I missed something? I'm not sure if you were supposed to be able to resize the window, but that also made it a lot easier. Good job though!

This is incredibly imaginative, and very, very, fun! Cute art as well. However, it doesn't really fit the theme.

Really cool concept. Its a bit hard to get your head around it first though.

But nicely executed. Great art and overall nicely done.

My favourite entry so far (It's only the second game I play, but it's very cool anyways ;)). I had some problems with my dual-monitor setup at first, but it worked after I put all windows on one screen manually. Innovation: 5!

Wow! Really cool concept executed brilliantly. I loved having to use Santa's from other screens to get a leg up on a jump.

Very innovative idea that matches the theme perfectly. Going to have a dig into the source code to see how you pulled this one off! Very fun.

Wow, pretty cool concept here. It took me a minute to figure out how to use the multiple windows but once I did it was pretty cool. Good job.

@benhumphries If you got stuck on the second level, try moving the two santas closer to each other. Santas can exist in the same space as eachother and help each other out.

@game-coder28 its built with Phaser, but all the window movement and syncing is custom and not part of the engine.

This is such a great idea, I don't know how I've never seen it before. Good animations, good art and sound too. There's not much to the game but, honestly, it doesn't need anything else. Great job!

### What you did well:
The graphics were really nice as were the sound effects. The concept of this game is awesome and I loved the idea of each window showing a different level. One thing I thought was amazing was the idea of being able to jump on top of the other characters. That blew my mind completely and was REALLY clever. Well done

### How to improve:
At some parts, I felt there were too many windows. Maybe only have up to four? It gets really cluttered otherwise.

Overall, whilst I was expecting a rip-off of "window frame" I got one of the best games I've played this LD. Congratulations.

Quite good execution of a cool idea! Really well done!

The bad thing about this kind of experiments is that there are a lot of things out of your control that can break the game. For example, at some point, I got an empty window instead of a window with a Santa on it. I don't know if that's normal. You can also close a window by mistake and I couldn't see a way to spawn it again.

Anyway, congratulations for being bold with that. The result is quite amazing!

This seems like a fun and clever game, but I couldn't get it to work on MS Edge 41.16299.15.0: after finishing the first level, I get "click to continue", a second window pops up where I can move the santa, but the first window just keeps showing "click to continue" and that doesn't seem right.
I tried using Chrome, but the popups keep getting bigger and bigger all by themselves. Also doesn't seem right.

Too bad, I would've loved trying this!

06. Dec 2017 · 22:44 UTC
@racso yeah theres a few things with browser compatibility and how most browsers actively try and block popups in certain scenarios that make it a challenge. I might try and release a post compo version with a few more bugs fixed, such as resizing and empty windows.

Thanks for the feedback!

WOW ! A true revelation for me ! Honestly one of the best ideas I saw in action on the jam. You attempted to do something like really well, it's clever, well made, easy to handle... I was at first impressed by the web window following you, but asking myself what was the point in gameplay matters of doing that. Then I saw what you could do with your past self... It's pretty awesome ! And as you gave the code, I can now see how you've handled this, because it's impressive !

Big kudos to you guys, you deserve a true 5 on innovation and fun. (even if I got stuck 2nd level, but that's because i'm a moron ;) )

Very different and impressive. But I think I enjoyed the concept and execution more than the actual gameplay. Also, accidentally broke the game by maximizing one of the smaller windows. Maybe add a button to reset the window state?

@jons_games using Chrome 62.0.3202.94 (Official Build) (64-bit) on Windows 8.1

As I checked the version, Chrome updated to 63.0.3239.84 (Official Build) (64-bit) so I tested again, but still the popups grow in size.

Huge respect as someone who also made a window-moving game for a previous (Super Resizer). The motion is very smooth and the gameplay gimmick of jumping on santas is very simple but provides interesting difficulties. It took until around 4 screen for me to really feel the theme, but it definitely worked well to add to the confusion and difficulty. Only problem is I closed one of the windows and as far as I could tell, couldn't get it back.

Nice idea haha! I saw a game leveraging windows as well few LD's ago. Been wanting to make something like it but i didn't even know you can do that on the browser O.o. At some point, there were just too much windows for me and it confuses the heck out of me. Also, the browser started lagging and made the movement feels laggy. So there's that.
But overall, very nice concept and execution :D

Very fun twist on the classic "control multiple characters simultaneously" puzzle category. I've seen games that take advantage of browser window control APIs in the past, but it remains novel every time. Definitely a game for those with a lot of RAM though!

Such a great idea, definitely takes the gold in innovation. A great puzzle, interesting gameplay. I for one downloaded your source code and will be checking out how you did the magic. The graphics were cute too.

The only downside was knowing which santas already picked up a present. The more santa's the harder it gets to know who caught already. Don't know if that was really what you intended, in connection to the theme. If not, adding something to identify that would be really nice.

Overall, great game, really innovative, I was really impressed. Congratulations :)

This is great! Really innovative--I don't think I've seen any platformer like this before. I do wish that it was easier to tell which presents belonged to which Santas, or at least, which Santas already had collected their presents. Once I was hitting more than 5 presents it was getting overwhelming to get any of them, though of course that fits pretty well with the theme. Overall, really good work!
