Overweight by Jack D. Taylor

[raw]
made by Jack D. Taylor for LD 40 (COMPO)

Unfinished, unpolished, unbalanced, but still more or less playable.

Haven't been able to start working on the game right after the theme announcement, and finally started only 24 hours later, halfway through the Compo.

90% of this game have been done in the second day of compo, but I decided to switch to Jam so I can have all 48 hours to work with. Although, on the next day I couldn't find any motivation to participate in Jam and compete with all those great and beatiful games made by Jam rules. So I just made the Compo-prototype playable and decided to publish it as Unfinished.

Still had a great fun participating for the 4th time already!

Controls

  • Space to keep your plane in the air
  • Mouse to shoot
  • 1-8 to switch between different weapons, engines (no effect) and plane paint-job (no effect).

Initial idea of the game

The initial idea was that you spend some money on different parts (better engines, armored hull, better guns), and the more parts you have - the heavier and more difficult to control the plane gets. But most of it was not implemented because of the time issues, so in this prototype you just have all three types of weapons with the same weight (so it doesn't affect the plane) and all other staff is purely cosmetic.

Having to hit space bar repetitively is a bit annoying, just holding it would be good. Beside that it's a fun little game :)

As bobombe said the hitting space bar repetitively is annoying lol
The game makes me feels like beach landing, weirdly.

I suppose 4-8 is those not finished engines and painted jobs?
Bullets for player may be a little bit too small to see..

And I suppose there is not too much relevance with the theme?

Thanks for your response, Raven. Yeah, maybe the spacebar-thing is not the greatest idea now that I think of it. I wanted to add some additional challenge with this, so you not only had to avoid bullets, but also **trying** to keep the plane flying the way you want. However I'm pretty sure I could've made that more responsive and satisfying for the player.

Regarding both the theme question and the 4-8 question: as I stated above, I've ran out of time too quickly unfortunately, so the game is really unfinished and even the core gameplay lacks a lot of planned features.

The initial idea was that you spend some initial money on different parts (engines, armored hull, better guns), and the more parts/features/benefits you have - the heavier the plane gets and therefore it's worse for player to have _more better_ plane.

So you shouldn't have all three guns from the start, it's what I've done to somehow vary the poor gameplay I've come up with at the end of Compo.

I'll add the initial idea to the post to make this clear.

I quite liked the game, even if its rudimentary form, makes me think of old flash games like helicopter!
(in its unfinished form, i'm actually surprised there was even a finishing landing sequence)

Don't forget to go out and rate other games by the way if you want more people to play and rate yours!

Fun game :)

It's okay. That's about it. Nice graphics at least.
