Worth Your Weight In Gold by UncleChris

[raw]
made by UncleChris for LD 40 (COMPO)

You are Arum, the Goblin and you must find gold. Cause Gold is Good!

A,D or <-,-> and Space to Jump

A 2D platformer which allows you to explore ruins and collect gold. The more gold you have, the heavier you are. With great weight comes greater and greater problems... jump height impacted, even ground can break!

Disclaimers: The game writes to PlayerPrefs, but Option screen was making issues for Sound - so removed it. I might put it back in if I can get that bug fixed.

There are six levels, with level one being sort of a tutorial level.

Very quick game. I think I beat it in 10 seconds? I guess that's the reality with 48-hour one-man jams. I didn't really see how it fit the theme...hm on reading the description, am I supposed to avoid the gold? Anyway, loved the audio.

Thanks for the feedback. There are six levels in total, keep playing to unlock and play other levels! Level one is just the tutorial.

Nice audio and humor. But that's pretty much it. The idea was not very well flexed out, I was hoping for some puzzles in the levels. Level 5 was broken for me: I saw only chest with no ground or character.

Okay, let's do this :

-I found the graphics much funny because of their naivety, the shrek has got me going
-the voice on the tutorials were really fun, sad that they were not there during th game
-the core gameplay is original, and pretty neat i must say. Sad that the graphics didn't followed and that the principal music gave me a headache, but honestly it is well-thinked. Noice gaem :)

(and the theme's well respected)

## Praise

That was surprisingly fun. It has both platforming and puzzle aspects. Having to consider what blocks to break in order to jump back out of an area quickly is a fantastic feature. I liked the voice acting as well.

## Suggestions

The jump is a little floaty. If you add animations and get better music, then this game would be close to perfect.

Great entry dude! Love the sound effects, recorded with your own voice or from online? Anyway, gameplay was fun since you had to be quite quick sometimes. It just didnt feel like there was a lot of difference between having 2 or 6 boxes of gold. Movement felt weird sometimes aswell. But despite that, lovely game :D
(Btw, is there something wrong with lvl5? When I load it I just see a bunch of boxes)

Thanks for the feedback.

After checking, seems that Level 5 had a map that still had compression on (when you are dealing with 16 x 64, every pixel matters and compression broke the colors used in the map reader). I fixed and have uploaded the map.

The voice is mine. The boxes are random in value, and I had multiple graphics for chests based on value, but time ran out before i could do it.

The more you get in gold, the faster the blocks would break as you passed over them, and the lower your jump ability. The "puzzles" are figuring out how to get all the gold chests without losing the ability to get to some of the chests in the level.

Also I implemented some of the animation on the player, but sadly it broke my controller and so I had to move it back to just one sprite. More time i could have figured out the issue involved.

Thanks,

Uncle Chris

Cool game, I like the original and quite fun gameplay! I'm not a big fan of blocky graphics, but you still did a good job on those. The sound is good for the short amount of time, and the voice is a funny addition.
Well done! :)

Was surprised: when I heard "heavy" I assumed it was purely to slow your movement/jump, but when it became a tool to dig through the level (and also fuck you over), I liked dat. Character controller seems floaty and the controls don't seem very reactive at times. Camera is also a little bit sluggish and not help in providing view of where I'm going at times. Enjoyed it tho

I've seen things like slowing down and jumping less as the game progresses, but this is the first game where I see that actually causes more tangible and permanent problems for the player. While this game was on the easy side of the spectrum, some moments here and there really showed off a lot of potential for puzzles, where rather than skills and timing, grabbing the things in the correct order could make the whole difference.

Fantastic entry for a compo. Here's hoping that you decide to eventually take this concept a bit further, as I do like the idea of destructible terrain dependent on the player's collection. It's genius.

That's pretty much all for now. [In behalf of my team](twitter.com/whalesandgames), we're looking forward to seeing your future projects. Cheers! :whale:

Very fun game.
Almost finished everything with 100% but level 5 is too much.
