Sleeping Cat Drumkit Defense by iMer

[raw]
made by iMer for LD 41 (COMPO)

Have you ever wondered if it is possible to prevent a sleeping cat from being woken up by attacking slimes by using your drumkit to defend it?

You haven't either? Well. You're in for a treat!

This is my (stupid) take on this (stupid) theme. It attempts to combine rhythm games and tower defense.

You can combine 4 different drum-things to create a super unique² sound track to slay slimes to: - Bass Drum - Cowbell - Claps - Snare Drum

² not actually unique in any way, shape or form. Very limited sound track

I ran into time issues at the end, so excuse the lack of graphics~~, bugs regarding the keys flying up~~ and lack of variety or balance ~~Linux build is coming soon~~

You can play the rhythm part of the game with either the arrow keys, WASD or A (left) S (down) K (up) L (right). The last method is pretty common when wanting to use two hands.

In order for towers to attack they need to build up their attacks, each successful (non-miss) beat hit gives the tower one extra attack point. Perfect hits give 2 attack points

Bass drum needs 1 attack point, cowbell and clapper 4, snare drum 7

Skipping beats (not pressing the key to hit them) does not cause any penalty.

Getting a bad/miss will cause enemies to speed up for a few seconds

If the game is way too fast for you, one thing you can do is open "assets/scripts/level.json" and search for "bpm" to lower the bpm (beats per minute). This will make the game theoretically harder, unless you set it super low it shouldn't matter though.

Update: I have now added a bugfix release that sorts all the rhythm game issues (check https://github.com/imerr/LD41/commit/f75cd45e590f6f55ff5b13854384eafbfc44ba13 - Only bugfixes) and added a linux build (untested)

I like the idea, but I'm just terrible at rhythm games >.< I feel like I want to be able to pay attention to the tower section, but can't because I'm doing rhythm stuff. I also was uncertain how the two systems interconnected.

Really cool usage of theme! I see one problem though: it's nearly impossible to follow the state of play while making the necessary rhythm inputs

Cool idea! I felt like it was a little slow to progress, especially on the first level when it's just one button, but overall I liked it!

I liked the idea. However, after several rounds the rhythm became too difficult for me mindless mashing of all the buttons proved good enough to all the enemies :D

Great idea, I really liked how the rhythm changes depending on which items you purchase. It was a bit easy for me, although the rhythm was quite complex by the end, I could almost randomly hit keys and win.

This was really create and I liked it a lot. There was the flaw that the tower defense section couldn't be very challenging because it would make the rest of the game way to hard but besides that good job. I got to practice my ability to keep a beat :)

The theme combination of this game is amazing, love it. Really enjoyed completing it. Gets very difficult to keep up with the rhythm at the end but fun nonetheless. Nice work!

Really nice combination of themes and intuitive controls. A preview of your new rythm would have been nice, so you could already guess what to play in the next round.

I really liked the theme combination. I suck at rhythm games so I just mashed buttons. If you wanted to up the difficulty a little bit you could add an input penalty on misses or drastically reduce the tower projectile power.

This was a great game to find! Saw you were in the danger zone and glad I clicked on yours! The main critical feedback I'd give is the first levels were too long and a bit boring due to just one instrument, then the later levels were too easy / short and didn't punish much for missing the notes because I could afford so many instruments. However, balance is difficult thing - especially within the game jam. I half expected the sound I made to have an impact on waking the cat, but I don't think that actually a mechanic! Good job with your game glad to have played it <3
