A Starving Monk by Bajtix
"A starving monk" is my first Ludum Dare Entry for LD 43 Jam. You play as a monk that joins a new order. The order doesn't have much money and the master of the order told you to collect as many coins as you can.
Control the monk during his crazy run. Avoid obstacles like the benches or people who don't want to donate . Collect as many coins as you can from people who have money (have a coin above their head).
Controls: A,S,D - left/right/center

Graphics and audio are simple, but get the job done. I liked the little intro sequence, although it went on a little bit long.
My highest run was 10 coins :)
A neat game you've made! I really like the intro music and the pixel art. It blends together really well. Nice touch on the intro sequence, it makes the game feel more complete!
The lanes you walk in are a bit close together, it is hard to see where you can and where you can't walk. So it would be nice if they were a bit more spread to left and right, or if the lanes were visible. It is also pretty hard to see what is coming, sometimes you're just trapped and you have no choice but to walk into a bench.
Overall a very nice game! Keep on jamming!
I liked that you tied a story to the actions of the game, that already gives me a reason to like the world and characters! The graphics are decent, they convey what they need to convey! The audio is simple but im glad that you added it!
It's difficult to see whether you can get hit or not, so I died to some annoying situations at times.
But good job!
Also, I don't really see how it merges with the theme.
Somehow this reminded me of McPixel
I like to go into games blind (not reading description or comments) to see how well they "talk" to the user. It was easy to understand which buttons to press since you show them at the beginning of the level. That was a nice touch! However, since I went in blind I also didn't realize that I should only collide with people who had coins above their heads. I believe this problem would have been fixed by guaranteeing the first object that shows up on the level is someone with a coin, so a new player can see the contrast between donors and non-donors immediately.
I do think the lanes could be a bit more clearly defined, though. I think what made it difficult to tell where my monk was going to go can be attributed to the fact that the obstacles could be spawned in a continuous fashion across the whole horizontal field (thus they would often cut into multiple lanes). Because the monk only had a discrete selection of areas to move to, it made it difficult to judge what button I should press to avoid an obstacle or reach a donor.
Other than that, though, this type of game is pretty classic so it's tough to get upset about. :) Nice job giving it your own charm!
