Squire by mambojambo
Three powerful heroes are on their way on a glorious quest. But there is also the squire. Yeah... that's you. Your task is to supply the real heroes with things such as potions, arrows and food. It's dirty work and someone has to do it, but hey, you have a donkey to help you carry stuff. Isn't that great? Also, remember that the donkey might need a carrot as motivation to tag along!
Good luck to the heroes on finding the hidden treasure in the misty woods. And for you, don't mess up!

Squire is exactly what it sounds like. You play as a lousy squire who has to attend to three heroes: a warrior, an archer and a wizard. Oh, and there’s a donkey. The donkey holds all the different items and such, and the player has to manage the different items in the inventory and hand them over to each hero when requested. And the player has to remember to bring the donkey. And the player has to make sure that the heroes don't die. And the hero has to remember to bring the donkey. Did I forget the donkey? Did someone say tacos? The idea itself is outstanding and the game implements it perfectly, with a super fitting setting and theme. This is definitely one of the most innovative game ideas I’ve seen in the LD40.
The gameplay is good, but the user-interaction when it comes to the item interface should be looked over. The graphics are adorable and the voices and music is very fitting. This game idea has a lot of protentional I believe and it would definitely be interesting to see further development on it. Good luck and tack så mycke’!
I'd love to see this game being developed further.
Having to explicitly select the weapon is nuisance, just pressing the short keys 1-6 should be enough - I don't know how often I pressed 6 for Taco and ran away, just to find out that I had not selected it...
Certainly one of the highlights of this year's LD!

@averagebrownie Thank you for your comment! Not the whole way back I hope. Did you use the carrot to make the donkey follow?
@miki Tack själv! Great feedback!
@mshopf Thanks a lot, very useful feedback
I like it in general, so congrats for this game!
The music and the little animation really work well, not breaking the intensity of the game.
But GODDAMMIT WHY THEY NEVER STOP AND WHY DID THIS ARCHER EAT ALL THE KNIGHT'S BURRITOS !
Some ideas:
- Maybe making the player character faster would have felt good
- I would have progressively added more heroes to the party (not different models, just more people), maybe starting at one hero
- The same progression could have been applied to the items. So to start with there could have only been tacos and then potions etc. would have been added
Audio was nice. Which the heroes wouldn't keep running ahead constantly..
4,5*!
I didn't see a relation with the jam's theme though. But overall, it's a very interesting game. Good job!
Please feel free to try our game, Paperwork, we're not at 20 ratings yet!
Audio is cute and game jammy! =)
I really love that you decided to go with the winning theme: ~~you are not the main character~~ The more you have, the worse it gets!
The game fully incorporates the winning theme and I'd be really stunned if you don't get a strong 5 star in the Theme rating.
The logic for the game itself seems like something you could spend a bit time expanding upon. Maybe the heroes go for sidequests and not just follow a spline? What if the heroes split up momentarily?
The heroes seem to lose life when enemies aren't close. Is this bound to them wanting taco and not getting any?
I think it would really add to the game if you added some more heroes and either let the player pick (but a squire has no say!) or random them.
As far as I know, a squire is dedicated to serve a single master, so I didn't fully get this idea of 3 heroes depending on 1 squire. But I buy it for this jam.
It's a cute little game, but I think you should try to squeeze the game jam's theme in for it to be really successful.
Mechanics wise, I would have loved a more gentle curve, with the adventurers being slower/waiting in the beginning. Would also have liked a mechanic where the adventures would stop for a second. (campfire placement, only available every X seconds?)
More diverse enemies would be nice, but to be fair, they are just a side-show.
Nicely done!
The Graphics are nice, controls are smooth. I got Donkey stuck behind a tree once, but figured out how to coax him back.
About the theme. Yes, I agree that is weak compared to many other games. We wanted to make something about handling many heroes and many tasks at the same time. The fact that one of the losing themes were "you are not the main character" was unfortunate, and if we had realized this earlier, we might have gone for a different setting.
To the anonymous comment about file changes: 03.32 was the local time here in Sweden 28 min before the submission hour was over. It always ends at 04.00 here
@ribout-horace Sorry about the archer’s manners. I guess it is too hard to resist a taco when offered.
@yomalolo Thanks! You didn’t reach the end? You definitely should give it another try. There is a secret reward at the end… maybe taco related.
@joror Campfires, more enemies and side quests sounds awesome. We would love to add that!
