Recoil by saucygames

[raw]
made by saucygames for LD 39 (JAM)

Play as a prisoner in a deadly game of survival, against a horde of robots!

Prototype version for Ludum Dare 39.

LMB for thumper canon;

RMB for mini gun; We didn't really make it to the theme in this version. But the overall idea of it is to regain energy by killing enemies while you are constantly losing and using your own energy. (That's what the watch is for).

We also made the only way to die in this build by lava for prototype purposes. We plan to continue working on this game and reach a full release on itch.io.

Well, there's certainly the Doom-esque feel to it, but everything seems to be a bit wonky and floaty, the swaying to left and right for example makes moving unintuitive (it's the sprite swaying in Doom, not the actual movement). I'm struggling to find a relevant connection to the theme in this case as well.

It has the potential to be a fun game of gauntlet, so keep it up!

A lot of potential in this game. The basic mechanics and feel of the game are good but with some tweaking (personally faster player movement and mouse speed) they could be great!

I like the idea of height-changing platforms and the movement is fluid enough. Also, I'd prefer more tense gameplay dynamics maybe.

If you plan to make it a full release, here are some recommendations :
Put a crosshair
Do not limit the resolution
Give the player a reason to go on the moving platforms
Make variation on enemies behavior so the player doesn't end up running only backward and shoot. That's a direct consequence of enemies only following the player.
Head bobing is way too exaggerated (i would say you used the fps controller of unity but with a wrong scale)

I liked the game and think it has potential to be a full game release. Gameplay wise, I think the player slides too much and movement could be more crisp. Also, as mentioned in other comments, mouse speed is a little slow, ideally it could be customised with a simple slider, and a crosshair would be nice.

Other than that, nice game!

Lovely audio and graphics! I included it in my Ludum Dare 39 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6R1HDnk8EU

Pretty solid FPS, but the control issues limit the fun factor a bit - the weird movement and variable mouse sensitivity when firing (fairly non-standard for an FPS I think?) made it a bit hard to play. Level design-wise, there isn't much of a reason to go on the platforms. Some sort of flying sound for the kamikaze enemies to indicate when they're close would help a lot, most of the time it was a strange surprise to have something exploding on top of me out of nowhere. Graphics and audio were pretty solid though, this has some good potential & with some fixes this could be pretty fun. Nice work!

"secondary effects include crippling depression" That line alone scores you 5 stars on humor and mood, mate. Gameplay-wise is super fun and engaging to play, would make for a perfect arena game with some more maps and difficulty tweaks.
