AsteroidCraft by schsam

[raw]
made by schsam for LD 41 (COMPO)

Forty years ago an alien race lost a huge of ships in an asteroid field. Now they are sending a small squad to get the points from the asteroids that were left behind on the first go round.

This game combines the hectic pacing of asteroids using the controls of a real time strategy game like starcraft. Heavy emphasis on micro.

Game was written in HTML5 + Canvas, so there is nothing to download and no waiting!! I hope you have fun :)!

Here's a GIF. Here's a YouTube Video.

The game will capture your mouse. Press Escape to set it free!!

I recommend making the browser as large as your screen will allow.

was hoping people would do RTS games, even tiny ones are super fun for me. this was great, never played a game of asteroids like it :)

I played this way longer than I'm willing to admit. Very awesome!

Great work, the mechanics combined with the incredibly clean art style made this game my favorite so far in this jam.

Simple yet quite fun and challenging, took me a while to figure out the controls but I've just finish the compo its 5am and my brain basically a patato atm.

Greatly exceeded my expectations from the screenshot. I'd love to see what a more elaborate version of this looks like!

Really cool idea, great execution! Would definitely play a version of this with a few more twists. Maybe upgrades and a way to make new ships? That aside, great entry, lots of fun.

This game is nice. It combines the RTS and asteroids! Never seen this before, to be honest. Great job!

Neat game! The controls are really nice and polished. The graphics are clean. Gameplay was fun. My only complaint was there are times when you only have 1 or 2 units left, and destroying anything becomes tedious.

Thanks All!! @recursiveanomaly I totally agree with you. I thought about that over the weekend, but couldn't think of a great solution.

Overall a nice game and I enjoyed playing it. Only problem was that sometimes I had to click outside the asteroid to activate attack on the asteroids.
Maybe my screen is too small and some text overlapped, but not a big deal:

Nice work, I enjoyed this!

As someone else mentioned it gets a little tedious after you've lost some units, I think you could solve this by not front loading all the enemies- the most threatening part of the level is at the start, (or slightly after once you've got some asteroid chunks moving about), but post that point it's just mopping up. If the game spawned a few saucers or other enemies during this period it would keep you on your toes.

I thought the big list of controls at the start of the game was a little daunting, the actual controls are pretty simple (as once you've selected your units it's just a case of right clicking to make them move around and attack), but presenting the player with that list right at the start might put people off.

The start of level 2 is brutal, by the time I've selected all my units and commanded them to attack the saucer had killed most of them!

I liked the graphical style and presentation, a few particle fx would be nice.

The RTS worked so well with the asteroids game. It was a good idea to merge both!

Really neat. Wish the red spaceship wasn't such a jerk. Having a split second to collect my ships would have helped a lot. Fun game overall. Felt good finally getting back at those damn asteroids with a whole fleet of ships.

Great game, I agree with @Kindred though and wish there was a few seconds to select my ships before the red ship appears and attacks.

Who knew RTS mechanics would work out with an asteroid game, yet here we are. Good job at that. Really fun entry.

It's great that you developed this game with such a novel control scheme! Not sure if it quite works though. I find it pretty impossible to command my fleet in more than 1 group. Also, it seems pretty impossible to avoid the ufo's bullets. I wonder how the game can be adapted so that it works better.
