Your Money's No Good Here by Dis0rder

[raw]
made by Dis0rder for LD 44 (COMPO)

A visual novel with an eerie atmosphere.

Was working on a very tight schedule, so this turned out very different than originally planned.

There's not really much gameplay here, but my emphasis was to tell a story and invoke a certain creepy mood I guess.

Enjoy!

Wow, I really enjoyed your game. The atmosphere is really oppressive and it is well written. Good job.

Well that really freaked my out. Reminded me a bit of David Lynch's stuff. Well done! I'm not going to forget that for a while :-)

Good job for the mood in this novel, it's weird, it's dark. nice!

The story falls a bit flat for me. There isn't much to read and there aren't really alternative paths as well. But you get a million thousand points for your sound design and at least a hundred thousand points for the eerie pictures. This was terror in picture and audio. Very well done.

I love seeing visual novels in game jams, and yours is among the very best I have had the chance to play. The maddening attention to detail in both sound and visuals is inspiring.

Pros :
- Very good storytelling, using the medium at its best by making the player trigger the important events (to me, rhythm makes or breaks a VN)
- The sound design is top-notch
- Each picture is well framed and contributes to the atmosphere

Cons :
- While it is not surprising given the time constraints, the story starts very strong but leaves you wanting for more
- It's my personal taste, but dear God do I hate jumpscares

All in all, great job ! Thank you for committing to narrative design.

You seriously killed it with the mood! I wasn't expecting to get creeped out. I didn't mind the linearity at all. There's some serious work put into this, you should be proud!

Great use of photos as graphics, they really set up the mood. And with the music, totally perfect. Storywise I wish I had even one fork in the story. I replayed second time to check if that choice actually mattered. Apart from the lovely image of contents of the fridge, it didn’t make any difference. I know that time is really limited when creating the compo game, but you could have had some other route to get same ending. That would have made the illusion that your choices matter, made the visual novel more game like.

Not sure if it really fits the theme but i think its a really cool game regardless, actually made me laugh on the "jumpscares" but i am actually immune to horror so thats not on you.

Also i'd recommend you put an epilepsy warning somewhere!

This game was perfect with the audio and mood. Very suitable choices throughout, I am incredibly impressed.

I do wish there were more to the story, but the limited scope is understandable within the context of the jam. Really well done, overall!
