Devils Circus

Description

You are trapped in a circus by a devilish figure. Your sole purpose is to entertain him by fighting monsters and by dodging obstacles.

By trading in your health points you will be able to gain score and unlock items and powerups. But don't sacrifice too much as you might regret it later...

Controls

  • A, D to move
  • Space to jump
  • Mouse to aim
  • Hold left mouse button to charge and release to shoot
    • Charging your weapon long enough will cause a critical hit

The "I didn't get around finishing, but I really wanted to implement this" list

  • More enemies:
    • Crawler that charged and jumps at you
    • An enemy that eats the platforms
  • More levels (slower difficulty curve) + Level tweaking
  • Bouncing balls
  • More items/ power-ups and weapons:
    • Knockback resistance
    • Crossbow (forced full charge to reload, always crit + better crit)
    • Valueables

After jam changes

The HTML5 contains some after jam changes; * Fixed invisible arrow bug * Lowered heart container prices in the shop * Added 5 levels (using the same mechanics as the already existing)

The JAM version (v0.1) is still available on itch.io.

It was pretty fun for me to play your game. I like how shooting feels in it and it's like 100% accurate choice of topic according to the theme.
Though the curtains became some blind spot where you can go but can't see a thing, which is why I managed to die there when I played for the first time. It wasn't obvious for me that something like that would happen(actually, I even though that maybe I'll pass to an another stage of the level or something if I'll get there).

Theatre decorations though is a brilliant choice that fits with the narrative perfectly.

I do agree that the curtains take up a lot of screen space and adds a blind spot. Thanks for letting me know :)

Pretty fun game, I like the 'show' theme with the curtain etc. I thought I damaged myself when I shot an arrow high up that fell down later which I liked, but after some testing I realized it was just the enemy damaging me, not my own arrow. So maybe it'd add some more difficulty if you can damage yourself, would be funny in my opinion :P Good game!

Had a good time while playing this game, the controls felt really cool, here are a few improvements I'd consider
* Jump height control or falling speed control
* Allowing the player to see the arrows when shot through the platforms

In the other hand, the lack of enemy variety is compensated with the environment threats, I liked the boulders falling and the platforms going down suddenly, the threats were easy to read before they happen, so I was able to anticipate them prefectly (even when I didn't know there were threats in the game).

Loved this little feature of kicking off the enemy corpses :P

The theme was perfectly applied here, graphics were OK, it's a shame there's no sound. Congratulations to the team!

A really nice game ^^ The arrow shooting felt right and the enemies weren't too hard. The graphics looked pretty good and the background looks awesome. It would have been maybe better with audio but all in all the game is pretty good. Also I was not sure how it was possible to purchase a very expensive item with only 3 max hearts. Even extra hearts were too expensive D:

One thing, the arrows seem to fly behind the stage sometimes.

It was really fun to play, we couldn't reach the end but we liked it
It's really polished, it would have been nice to have limit to the price of the items (don't have items which cost 6 hearts at the beginning)

Our highscore is 755 !

** The Jumping **
A more "controllable" jump would be nice indeed. You are able to fall down faster when holding space, but being able to make small little quick jumps would help the game for sure.

** Invisible arrows **
This seems to be a sort ordering bug, which slipped through. Thanks for bringing this to my attention!

** Expensive shop items **
I can imagine it being annoying when you only get expensive items in the shop. Maybe it should filter out items that cost waaay more than your current max health. More levels might also help since it would allow you to stack up on heart containers.

** No sounds **
It's a shame that there is none. Next time I should give this more priority and implement it earlier.

Very polished & fun game! Love the artstyle and those smooth transitions. Made it to level 20. You could add some variety by just changing the bats color. :)
