Number Station by maxr00

Welcome to the Number Station.

Your job entails listening to the radio, and sending those numbers forward by simply typing them into a phone, how convenient! For security reasons we may ask you to translate the numbers through a simple code, be sure to watch the TV for any code changes. We must apologize for this, but due to power shortages, the station is unable to support the radio, television, and overhead light at the same time, so be sure to be careful turning on and off those switches! Be warned, please avoid listening to any stray broadcasts, we promise you, they are meaningless. If a broadcaster happens to stay in our system too long, this is a breach of security! Please wait until further notice before inputting any more codes, and by no means should you follow any advice from said broadcaster. Happy listening!

How To Play

Only a mouse is needed to play! Click the switches to turn power on for that system (Lights, radio, or TV) Click and drag left or right on the radio dial to tune it. Drag your mouse further to tune the radio faster. Turning on all 3 switches at the same time will cause a short-circuit, avoid using too much power! In the event of a short-circuit, just flip the switch back into its on position to turn it back on.

Hi! This is my 5th Ludum Dare entry, and by far, my favorite. I loved how everything turned out. This was a first for a lot things, it was the first time I made a 3D game for Ludum Dare, voice acted for a game, and recorded music and sound effects live! I hope you enjoy the game as much as I did making it! (PS There are two endings! See if you can get both!)

Like my game and want to see the not-so-occasional update on my next project(s)? Consider following me on twitter! https://twitter.com/MaxRauffer

Hints (avoid before playing)

Here are some hints for anyone needing some help with the codes! I tried to make them difficult enough to not solve super quick but I guess I made some of them too hard!

  • The hint “Evens” means input only the even numbers
  • The word “ECHO” should be treated like the letters E, C, H, O separately
  • E and H should both be considered even numbers, as they stand for 2 and 6 respectively
  • 0 is not odd or even!
  • All the correct codes are in document in the download links, in case you get stuck and want to continue the game!

Got stuck at 5E6C7928ECHO99 so I stopped there. Great art and mood, very gloomy feel. Audio work was excellent as well. Good job.

Very neat art and sound design. I love the idea. I couldn't figure out the puzzles after the first few, which was a little frustrating - I tried all the combination of "evens" I could think of to no avail. Eventually gave up after about 8 minutes of no progress. But I really appreciate the creativity and use of art, light, sound, and theme.

Not sure why but I couldn't get past like the third one. Tried putting in the number many times.

Minor, though. The game looks and feels amazing. I would have liked to control the radio with the scroll wheel or arrow keys or something, but that hardly takes away from this unique experience. Good job.

Got stuck on 'evens'. Tried a few things but didn't work. Having the screen shift while trying to turn the dial was a negative point. More so then the lil bit of guitar that looped in the background. It was fine at the start, but when I got stuck it became too repetitive and pushed me away from sticking around to try more. It wasn't clear to me when I did something right. Regardless, Loved all the visual detail, nice to play what feels to be a finished game. Amaz job for a compo!

This game absolutely nails atmosphere. It reminded me a lot of Oxenfree, actually, lonely ambiance with radio noises. It's nice, nicely nostalgic. The puzzles were cool but the standout was definitely the ambiance.

I also had trouble at 5E6C7928ECHO99. Pretty sure I was inputting the correct numbers. Eventually I made it past, but in the middle of inputting the sequence. I am not sure if I misunderstood the sequence or there is a bug in how it checks.
Otherwise, nice solid game in 48 hours! Tuning, radio chatter, managing clues all felt good. Audio was great. A bit frustrating trying to hit keys using a trackpad. Would have preferred being able to use number keys, although that would change the power requirements as light would no longer be necessary. Graphics were nice, although pretty demanding, could not use by integrated graphics card on my laptop. All in all, nice work!

This is superb. I had the same issue Ashment and Dob did (I tried both the even and not-even numbers), but even just up to that point it was really cool. Great concept and great execution—having all the menu and instructional text in-world was a really nice touch. Bravo.

I got stuck on HOCE(Echo). It didn't seem too difficult but I tried a few possible solutions and it did't seem to take. Nice idea and polish.

I think this a interesting idea. The solitude sitting in you secret shed typing numbers. The graphics and mood were enjoyable.

The audio was very good and the graphics really contributed well to the overall mood. (For some reason I was almost expecting those creepy guys from Albino Lullaby to sneak up on me.)

I didn't really figure out much...I get the impression there is a lot more to it than what I found. I plan on playing this one some more before looking at your hints section. Very nice job.

Doesn't work on linux 64bit. It's unity so you should be able to export 32bit and 64bit hybrid. Please? it looks really fun.

Reading the hints here, it seems like the reason I got stuck was that you don't consider zero an even number :(

You had me break out the pen and paper! [Image](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/228994776635015168/341816432641966090/Snapchat-928527723.jpg)

This was by far the most rewarding game Ive played. Coincidentally I just got into listening to Shortwave radio last week. So it really hit me in the excitement area. Fantastic work. :D

Absolutely superb atmosphere in this game. My only complaint is that the player keeps repeating the same voice lines over and over. It seems like it would have made more sense for the player to only say them once. Overall very polished and the theme fits very well into the gameplay. Really had to double check to make sure this wasn't a jam.

Seriously good atmosphere. I've always loved the idea of number stations and you executed this really well. Turning the dial was a little finicky but overall a pretty minor issue. Keep up the great work!

I got stuck at the same place as other commenters. Double checking with your solutions in the document, the voice says different numbers than you have written down, it says 28 where it should say 99 the first time. Just thought I should point that out.
Otherwise nice puzzle game, with just enough hints. The effects and atmosphere is well done.

Incredible game, great use of mechanics. Very entertaining but I thought the puzzles may be a bit hard, I managed to fluke my way to the timed puzzles once but after that could not get that far again despite thinking I already knew the puzzles :P Nicely done!

Perfect mood, graphics and audio. Really nice job! I was stucked on radio 5 when I considered 23 as one odd number :)

Dude, it was awesome! Well, firstly, congratulations on making it all by yourself. I fully enjoyed the whole experience. I loved the ambiance... I felt sneaky, curious and scared... all at the same time. The art is pretty cool and the audio, well, is excellent. Really awesome job, Max. Keep rocking!

I really liked this game. It's simple but unique and enjoyable. Some things were clear to me at first, but I was able to solve them later. Graphics and audio design are really good as well. Congrats!

I really don't like turning-dial mechanics like this. Gave me flashbacks to Oxenfree lol
