SENTINEL by JesusAcHe

[raw]
made by JesusAcHe for LD 44 (JAM)

In this short, random and possibly super unbalanced roguelike, you play a Sentinel bot, tasked with clearing several areas of all possible enemies. However your ammo and your life are tied together, so upgrading, shooting and receiving damage all may lead to your ultimate fate.sentinel.gif

* CONTROLS: *

WASD -> Movement
MOUSE -> Aim and shoot
Q -> Equip found items
E -> Toggle between equipped weapons
ESC -> Pause

CURRENTLY WORKING ON:

-Improving the level generation.

-Adding more and better sound (The big bullet doesn't play any sound when fired).

-More VFX!

Current known bugs: The game can crash at random and I dunno why.

I fell in love with it as soon as I saw the GIF! Very polished. Every action feels very good. Nice feedback for hits, smooth movement. Everything is very clear and self explanatory from the start. This is how jam games should all be like! Keep up the good work!

I loved this one! I was having a lot of fun until the game crashed after finishing the first level! I would like to see more of this!.

Also the art is the cutest.

This must really be one of the best games I have seen in this jam so far (even if I didn't look up that many games)
I absolutely loved the graphics and the music and, mostly, the gameplay.

I suggest you continuing this project and making it into an actual game, because I'd
definitely play it. Also try making versions for Mac and Linux too (even if I found out you can play the game on Linux with Wine, that's how I played it).

Also you should make it more clear that you lose health when you shoot... I ended up dying just because I loved firing at everything I saw. I can now see the heart getting more and more transparent but maybe with a degree of red or a bar indicating when you'll lose your next life it'll be more clear... that's just a suggestion though! Awesome game, congrats.

@kichex Thank you so much. I'm sorry the game crashed, do you remember if there was an ERROR message, or the game just froze? It's my first time doing rando generation of stuff, so there's a lot of bugs that are hiding right below the surface, that I couldn't catch.

@nico-the-pro I will try and improve some of the stuff. I ran out of time to create the tutorial, but I think the UI should've been enough to convey your health loss, I will need to find a better way.

Thanks everyone for playing and commenting!

@jesusache How rude of me I didn't took a screenshot of the error message! I just downloaded the game again from home and apparently it works well ? It crashed only out of nowhere after killing an enemy on the 2nd level. This time I got to play a little bit more of it and I liked it! Well done

Really liked this game, great gameplay and a really clean look overall. So many people mess this style up but you did a great job keeping the game clean and polished. Congrats on some great work!

Great game. My favorite weapons were Big Bullet and the one that splits into more bullets.

Screenshake and SFX are on point. Graphics are really charming.

I think it is a bit too easy. Even after buying most upgrades I had too much health. I haven't tried any of the faster weapons so they may change the gameplay up a bit.

I also like that the game doesn't need any tutorials, you did a good job on the button prompts. I'll be stealing that for my next jam =P.

Overall, great job!

Good execution, but once you get the hang of it though, there isn't really anything special about it. On one hand I like the way your hearts are circling around you, on the other hand I found it confusing if they have a hitbox or not, and they were sometimes obscuring enemies (or distracting me from bullets).

PS: Got a crash the first time I tried to go through the gate.

@klianc09 Yeah, the challenge and levels don't ramp up with the upgrades. I've played some runs where I just end p with more hearts than I could possible count, so that's one of the first things Im trying to fix for the post jam.
The hearts are one of things that worried me, so I'm messing around with the idea of them being like the shells in mario kart.

That error is probably the same that Kichex found, so a huge thank you for copying it! I'll get to resolving it because I still haven't come across it.

Wow, this is great! Feels super polished, I wouldn't guess that it was made in a short time frame. I love the graphics and animations, and the sound effects go with it really well. Unfortunately I got the same error that klianc did at the end of the first level. Exciting game though, nice work :smiley:

Very nice and playable game. I think it is only missing a global score.

Really cool! Why no rating four Sound? I really like the soundtrack.
The core gameplay is really polished, the shooting and killing is very satisfying and the uprage system fits the theme. The art was nicely done and through the projects very coherent. A very polished entry that looks and feels very professional.

I encountered a crash after finishing level 1, but on the next try, it didn't happen anymore.
Great stuff! Keep up the good work

@duke The music was made with the templates of a music generator, and the SFX are recycled from my previous Jam entries, so I sw no point in getting a rating for that :p But thanks you so much for playing it and the feedback!

Really cool game. Everything seems on point but the balance of getting new hearts is a bit harsh and the better weapons don't seem to be that much better. But I liked that there is plenty to choose from, there different types of enemies. The movement is nice and fluid but at some point there was nothing to be curious about. Anyway very nice entry!
