Crossroads by jka

[raw]
made by jka for LD 44 (COMPO)

You're the last known survivor of the apocalypse. In a desperate attempt to stay alive, you make deals with the devil at an abandoned crossroads...

Rules - Enemies come in waves. Survive as many waves as you can. - Your health is restored between waves. - Between waves the devil appears for a short time. If you stand close enough you can sign pacts to become stronger, but you lose one max. health for each pact you sign. - Every 5 waves one max. health point gets restored. - All upgrades stack. For example: if you get piercing bullets, your bullets will pass through 1 enemy. If you get it again it will pass through 2 enemies, etc.

Controls - WASD - Move - Mouse - Aim - LMB - Fire - 1 - Buy upgrade 1 - 2 - Buy upgrade 2 - M - Mute/Unmute music

Tools/Libs used - Unity 2019.1 - RetroKit (made by me): Used to create all sprites, animations, sound effects and music for this game. - NavMeshPlus: For path finding/object avoidance.

And my initials here right? What a great implementation of the theme. Pretty solid arena shooting, zombie spawns are a bit difficult, but overall really solid. I also enjoyed, pointing my mouse to the left then walking backwards with d and pretending I was moon walking, way too much.

Great job! I wish I had a little bit more time to sign the contract for upgrades, but had fun playing otherwise!

@commanderstitch That's the feeling I was going for. Glad that worked out.

@crosenlund79 Oh, that is weird! Did you stand near enough to the devil? Some text should pop-up that you can press 1 and/or 2 to buy different powerups.

@strugglesingamedevelopment Haha, I found that weirdly satisfying as well. The harsh difficulty was intentional, but I'm sure it could do with some better balancing.

@paragonraptors The short time is intentional, to force the player to make a quick decision. (The devil is a busy man.) Might have went a bit too far with it though.

@evolus Thanks!

Thanks for playing and the feedback everybody!

I really liked the game, but the randomness of the contracts felt bit off. Multiple times I got twice the option of piercing buullets, while I've already bought it before. Which feels like lost oppertunity to get a useful upgrade. But otherwise really fun little game. Really nice adaptation of the theme, liked that very much.

Simple but good looking graphics, and nice use of the theme. I like that it's challenging.

@JinTsen The randomness can be a bit harsh at times. All the upgrades stack though. So if you bought piercing bullets, your bullets will pass through 1 enemy. If you get it again it will pass through 2 enemies, etc. So it can be very useful to buy the same upgrade multiple times! I should probably put that in the description though, as I don't think it's obvious.

Also, I found that it sometimes better to buy nothing at all and just get through a wave by having more health points.

Thanks for playing and thanks for your feedback!

Cool game. The idea with upgrades that player gets from devil is great.I think you should make the time when you speak with devil longer, atleast first 4 waves.Sounds fit very well. Good job!

@victorcrafty I want to keep that time short, but having it a bit longer for the first couple of waves is probably a good solution. Thanks!

@deathbysnail Thanks! I probably spend too much time on that, but I'd like to think it was worth it.

Hiscore: 2 stages.
Self-explanatory. Very hard. But fun! I like the 8-bitty music a lot.

@lyghtningwither Thanks! I'm not that experienced with making music, so I was a bit insecure about it. Glad you liked it. :)

Really really cool! Made it to wave 11. Maybe the devil could just stay on for a little longer, cause I couldn't decide for upgrades fast enough :D

Gave me a bit of an adrenalin rush. I had to decide abour the upgrades quickly, then I had to shoot even quicker  Nice graphics as well.

@jka Yeah, I have nothing against randomness in general. I did not realise that first piercing bullets would only penetrate 1 enemy. Knowing that it makes sense to have it randomized like that.
I did realize that sometimes buying nothing is the better option.
It's really intersting feature that you can kill yourself by buying a contract with only 1 life left. I just had to try it ^^

Totally wins the award for Best Satan Sprite 20XX Ludum Dare 44. Well done. Fun game. Turned the music off and played the battle theme from Xenoblade 2 for my stream, they all loved it.
