Ashes by Sharks

[raw]
made by Sharks for LD 44 (JAM)

INFO AND CONTROLS:

NOTE GAME IS NOT UP YET. Ashes is a fast paced game in which you put out fires. Use WASD and Space to move. Click to use Fire Extinguisher. The icon in the bottom right is the amount of water you have. It will deplete as you use your fire extinguisher. When you run out, go to the fire extinguisher outside to refill it. The fires are a bit finicky, but it's possible to put them out. TIP: Try to spread the spray of the extinguisher as long as possible.

Woah, this looked amazing! The music was a bit lackluster though. Thanks for supporting all the firefighters around the world, they need it!

@adrien-dittrick Thanks! I umm.... Totally did'nt make that music with literally 5 minutes to the deadline. Im not very happy with it either... but. It was the best I could do. Thank you for the feedback.

I love the graphics and the effects !

The gameplay and theme interpretation is unique and very interesting. Audio was a bit overkill but that was mentioned already. The graphics were made pretty poorly even though you have an understandable and sweet little HUD with good transitions between Intro, the Game and the GameOver screen. Your game is very creative but needs more time and effort to be fun, it has some potential.

I really like the music, it works to build the mood.

You weren't kidding about it being demanding. I couldn't run up the stairs for some reason (tried the HTML5 version).

@lakrits Yeah... I did not put ANY effort at all into optimization. Also, you hitting the spacebar right? I did'nt get around to making the character auto-run up the stairs.

@sn4pi Thank you for your great feedback. Graphics are something Im working on, not very good at the moment. I tried my hardest to make it fun but alas I dont have good time management so I was cramming as much in as possible! Thank you for playing!

@sharks Aha, I didn't even think about having to jump up stairs, haha!

@sharks Mentioning space in-game would have done the trick, thought only WASD was the controls. I didn't read the text below the game.

Nice idea! This has potential. The control feels a bit sluggish and maybe the glow-effect is a bit too much. All in all you did a nice job!

Nice job, maybe tune the effects down a bit XD

I had some framerate issues on HTML5. The music was a little too loud but this was a good idea. And a fitting tribute!

The idea is interesting. Had to play on windows build, as the OpenGl was super laggy for me (around 5 fps :x but i guess it's not easy when it's 3D). I think your can push this concept further as i think extinguishing fire awake some sort of "game design lenses" on me. A whole game designed around that can feel really amazing, so nice find : D

@orpartlu Thank you so much! Do you mean the controls did not respond very quickly? Or the character is slow?

@allan-urique Thanks, I'm not the greatest with graphics, so I hide behind a thick curtain of effects :/

@kaleido Yeah the HTML5 version doesnt run well. Sorry about the music being to loud, and thanks for playing my game.

@hpmnk It's all the fire particle effects that are killing your framerate, and the Post-proccessing as well on OpenGL. Thanks for the feedback, maybe I might try to turn this into a full game...... Just have to re-write ALL the spaghetti-code.

Great looking game! One of the comments says "tune down the effects" but I disagree! I thought the effects were evocative of intense heat and the stress of the job. Really unique idea as well. Great entry

Agree with the others here who commented about how good the look of the fire effects are, seems like a good choice for a game like this. Nice work!

@sharks I guess the character is too slow. I know, the equipment is heavy, but it feels a bit too slow or too heavy.

Great Work! Liked that you dedicated it to firefighters. Just wasn't quite sure how it fit the theme, but I liked the gameplay. The movement was really slow but i'm assuming that was to emulate the heavy equipment they have to carry, and auto-walking up the stairs would've been nice, but all in all great job! thank you :)

@shaner421 Thank you, it wasnt very clear, and it loosley fits the theme, but its supposed to be that firefighters risk there lives, and of course earn money. So it's kind of like your life is currency... but not really.

Sorry, but it was just unplayable for me.
I downloaded it, I have a pretty high-spec machine, I turned it onto the lowest settings, but it still lagged way too much to play.
I went upstairs, ran out of water, went back down, filled up... by then it'd slowed down to about 1fps.
It seems like a good concept, i'd like to play it, but you really need to optomize.

@shaolin-dave Sorry to hear, that. Like I said I never really got around to optimization during the jam. Thank you for trying anyway!

Was a bit laggy so that made it a bit rough to play. The music did not match the vibe of the game much either. Your fire effect looked great though. Good work, very ambitious project for a game jam :)

Even after downloading it was very slow-paced. It also took a really long time to refill the fire extinguisher (??) and really quick to use it up, so the fire just gets worse. Good effort, though.
🎤 Sharks
05. May 2019 · 16:23 UTC
@heyycap The fire extinguisher refill should only take 5-10 seconds. Maybe its because I forgot to multiply the refill by Time.timescale (amount of time that passed since last frame.) So on a slower device it will refill slower and refill faster on a faster device. The fires don't actually relight, it's just an illusion. There is a set amount of fire that ignites after a certain amount of time has passed. Thank you for playing!

You've done quite an immersive game, I felt in constant tension to put the fires out and not have them spread more. Well done!

Having to jump to go up the stairs was a bit annoying and I got the feeling that water took ages to refill (I think it did take about 5-10secs, so it probably worked fine and I was impatient to go up again )

Music felt a bit repetitive , too, but apart from these things I enjoyed playing through until all the fires were out.

Congrats!
