Death's Purse by sadsmile

[raw]
made by sadsmile for LD 44 (JAM)

Hello! This is our entry for this LD-Jam! It's a 2D-Roguelike (yes, the turn based kind) where you get to control a Man who recieved a purse from Death himself. This purse keeps the man from aging but there is a catch: Once he looses all of his money he'll die! On top of that. Death provides services to the man in exchange for his lifespan, but look out, even if you don't age yourself you can still die of old age!

CONTROLS

WSAD / Arrow Keys -> Move Around Mouse -> Select action Some actions require you to input a direction after using them (Sprint, Stab) so don't forget to do that!

NOTE: This project was way to ambitious for us so it ended up kinda lack-luster and feature less. We still hope that you have some fun with it and pls tell us what you think about it!

NOTE 2: Electric Boogerloo: We'll maybe add some more features and quality of life changes so pls tell us if something comes to mind :)

I had trouble getting the game to work. The graphics look great, and the level design was good. Nice work.

I love the idea / concept. And I really appreciate a good web game (Not having to download is great!). However I had some issues trying to move. It would prompt me on every button press, including if I was just trying to move. I'm not sure if this is intended or if it's a bug, but it did take me forever to move around.

Maybe I'm missing something? Either way it looks good, and I'm sure it would play good if I could figure out what's going on :P

I understand it's very unfinished, however as far as the current state of the game goes—
The control and pace of the game feels quite clunky, it's a bit confusing to manuever. There isn't really any audio or visual feedback of any kind for any action so it's hard to tell what's going on. The action menu also is a bit strangely stylistically clashing. The spritework itself is nice but as I understand it they are pre-bought assets.

The art is good, but the controls are a bit clumsy. Perhaps it's due to the fact that it's difficult to tell when the turn is going on and how exactly your abilities work. So if you have some time, I would suggest making some UI improvements that could help with this issue :)

I don't understand the movement, do I have to click on Sprint every time I want to move? I also couldn't figure out how to attack, when I click Stab and press towards an enemy I just die.

The graphics look interesting and aging after picking up the first few treasures looks neat. Though I can't get past the first enemy I encounter because it shoots me back to the start.

Hey it's a good start! The tiles look nice! I like the reaper and the zombies. Also the environment like wall tiles and the flames are superb. I did not manage to kill a zombie though, but maybe that was my fault?

Congrats, well done.

I liked the art style, it was consistent.
The narrative matched the theme.

Please, rate my game and leave some feedback too =]

A grace to pixel art. Staying stopping all the time to choose what to do leaves the game a bit slow. Good luck to finish it!

I also made a game for this LDJAM. Come try it out! Leave your comment too!

Couldn't figure out how to kill enemies, so instead I tried to get them stuck on the walls and run past them which also made for a enjoyable experience. Overall, while it is a bit lack-luster, I'm still impressed that you managed to add randomly generated rooms and turn based mechanics as those take quite a long time (At least for me). Given the time frame, I think you did a very good job!

The confusing controls were, where the game failed a bit. I can see how it fits into the theme. The idea seemed quite promissing, but i think it would have been worth to work more on the controls. I liked the visuals and could see where you wanted to go with it. I enjoyed it though! Pitty i can't vote on graphics

Eating the pizza slices to grow up was funny. The graphics look nice, but I guess that you didn't make those since you opted out of that category. I would have liked to be able to choice the things from the white menu with buttons (so no menu appearing whatsoever). Perhaps you can also add some sounds and animations for the various actions that the player can do.
