Running Out Of Spice by Raivk

RUNNING OUT OF....
SPICE !
Welcome in your spiceship, a magnificient flying machine powered by spices !
Let's go and explore the universe ! Go as far as you can. Don't forget to get some spices on the road, or you will run out of spice. (Spoiler alert : you won't move without spices). But be careful, if you pump up too much the spice level, your spiceship will need to go super fast to vent from the heat induced by spices. And you don't want to wreck your ship on an asteroid, or worse, on a spice bomb...
Use the arrows on your keyboard to move, and press the spicebar to shoot bullets.
Fly safe, score high, go far !
LET'S GET SPICY !

UPDATE V1.1 - BUG FIXES
- Fix asteroids to prevent them from becoming invisible for absolutely no reason. Those invisible asteroids were still giving damage, being extremely frustrating.
- Fix asteroid material : the asteroids were all receiving incorrect lighting data, displaying pitch black shadows thus making those asteroids hard to see.
- Fix difficulty : Difficulty was too high due to enemies doing multiple instances of damages. Enemies were colliding multiple times with the player, doing sometimes 4 times more damages than necessary.
- Fix linux build : should work on linux now.

I wish there was some kind of level progression, so the player would learn the mechanics and controls smoothly, and sometimes there is too much visual clutter, and you can barely see what you are doing.
Graphics are awesome, soundfxs are great, the music is perfect for this kind of game and the controls are neat.
My only complains would be that 's it pretty difficult to gauge where you are in space, making it difficult to collect spice (combined with the hard to see meteors).
Also the spice level seemed to go out REALLY too quick. I could barelly play for more than 10-15 seconds before dying on every playthrough.
Overall a really nice job !
Thanks again !
* glowing particle effects? check! glowing powerups? check! glowing death mines? check!
* below a certain spice level you just can't come back, slowing down to a crawl is depressing :slight_frown:
* _ludicrous spice speed_ :laughing:
* I kept hitting things that were directly in front of the ship I didn't see, maybe smaller ship or give asteroids more visual contrast with background - the way the ship takes up more screen when going slower sort of works against the idea that going slower is easer :\
* similar thing with the blue afterburner trails, they look awesome but I can't see through them
* Glowing mines are great, they're very obvious and every time I hit one I know it's my own mild spice pilot skills holding me back
* I missed a lot of shots with the cannon and eventually gave up since I couldn't reliably hit stuff in my path and it was easier to try to dodge. some kind of autotargeting maybe?
* flavor text about how the spice's the limit, etc are very good
Thanks for making this game!

That's a really, really good feedback !
Thank you so much ! We're really happy to see this !
Yep you're right, something is wrong with visibility ! We gave a lot for the look, and we may have went too far, making it more pretty than readable x) anyway !
You might have been hit by those pesky little invisible asteroids (BUT STILL DOING FULL DAMAGE !) (They're really really small, but still have the full collider).
Bug fix is on the way ! Soon !
Just a heads up to say we are aware of a little bug, friend testers were getting hit by nothing, and in fact our level generator was sometimes spawning really tiny asteroids ! So we fixed it.
Also fixed multiples collision, preventing them from happening (if you hit an asteroid, you want it to give only ONE instance of damage, not three or four !).
Fixed asteroid material receiving incorrect lighting data too.
To finish, we are aware of a bug with the linux version preventing it from launching the game. This version might fix it.
Also the hyper spice is fxxking awesome. Great Job!
That's the reaction when you open the game and see how polished it is.
I don't see how that fits with the theme. Making great movements with the ship is a little difficult because of the camera position, maybe a narrower game zone would have been better, but anyway I think it's due to the fact that rail shooters are more about aiming and shooting that moving (like the genre name lets suppose). The gameplay is very simple, and not very innovative, but it's still funny.
Let's come to the strong point of your game.
Visuals effects are great, the UI is clean, and the meshes are simple but elegant. There is a real effort in sound design too. Even the menu is badass. And I didn't see any bugs during my play. So yes, it's helly polished.
Great job !
Not sure if the whole spice thing is a Dune reference, but it's a fun concept regardless.
Amazing. Absolutely amazing. I couldn't read where I was going at first, but I manned up and got a handle on it. I think this might be better than Race The Sun tbh.

@darenn thanks for the nice feedback, we're working on a post ludum dare version, and have a better camera thanks to your comment and those of other people. You rock !
@yetman glad you enjoy our spice shooter ! Don't hit your spicebar too hard while playing :D ! We love pun, and we're super happy the spiceship pun caught your eye !
@magmafortress @gamepopper @simogecko @epigramgames @wetbox @diwo @niccolas-suprik thanks for the awesome comments ! That's super kind and we appreciate it :D
@kirb and @RiptideStudio thank you for the kind comments !
I had a fun time playing it, thank you very much!
