Soccer Slasher by Supernapie

[raw]
made by Supernapie for LD 41 (JAM)

Obviously i don't know anything about soccer. I only heard 'soccer is war'.

Soccer Slasher is a sports hack 'n slash. You need to slay enemies by kicking a ball at them, before they can hit you.

How to play

You control your player with the cursor keys. Tip: you can walk diagonally by pressing two cursors keys at once.

It is built with Phaser so you can play it right here in your browser.

About

I only started sunday afternoon. So there was even less time. The graphics and sounds are very basic and i mainly focused on the programming. Getting down a fun gameloop was the main priority.

The ai logic for the enemies worked out pretty nicely. I wanted to use A-star pathfinding, but i was losing a lot of time getting the framework wired up. In the end i came up with a system that uses timers, where the enemies sometimes follow the player and other times they decide for themselves where to go. It produces a really nice swarming effect. Check out the source code to see what i mean.

This is my first submission for Ludum Dare. Building something in a very short time was very fun. Next time i join the jam, i will allocate more time for it during that weekend.

Really like how the AI was done. It's not perfect but it was enough to prevent me from just hiding behind the ball so they'd just suicide into it. Graphics are coherent and audio fits. I felt the screenshake ended a bit too abruptly but it was still satisfying nonetheless. Especially with how much time you had, great job.

Hah, that camera shake kill seems overboard but works I think to highlight the slashiness of such an otherwise simple (graphically) game. I can see how this can become addicting, moving the ball and scoring. Nice idea and nicely implemented! Cheers!

Fun simple game. I agree with wchaney that the AI was a little tricky, which was fun - you had to pay attention rather than rely on them just to move in a predictable way. Good sounds and violence. Nice work!

I like the challenge of guiding the ball. I would say it's definitely a challenge getting the ball to hit enemies.

The choice of "Take me out to the ball game" as background noise is a bit odd. Usually that's with baseball.

I guess if I was going to make a suggestion, maybe make the ball's friction a little higher, or provide more balls on the field. It's a little awkward chasing after the ball after missing an enemy. I suppose that could work as part of the challenge, but it was a bit lengthy of a chase.

Good effort!

@davidsheadgames,

Thanks for the feedback.

The background noise just had a good mood. Where i came from we don't have a lot baseball stadiums, so i had no idea ;)

After the jam voting i will add more balls, because that's not a bug, but more content.

at first: form a developer standpoint, I really like that I can play the game direct on your github page :)
now about the game: I like the idea, it's definitely interesting but there are some things I would change:
- the background sound was a little too much in my opinion
- I don't like the decision to be able to go outside of the field, that doesn't make much sense if your game is kinda a soccer game
- also I found out a "cheat" because enemies die any time they hit the ball I can just wait behind the ball and wait until they run into it

Nice concept! The graphics are simple and colourful, the camera shake on kills gives the game character and the gameplay is intuitive and well executed. Overall nice work, especially for such a short time!

@Hisfantor

I let the player go outside of the field (actually he wraps to the other side), because the ball can go outside of the field. The ball goes outside of the field, because otherwise the ball will simply get stuck in a corner. By the way if the enemies are really close and you go outside of the field they will still follow you.

@Crimson

Glad you like the camera shakes. I use them in almost every game.

Great concept, sound and graphics are simple but work. I found aiming and retrieving the ball when you miss were quite difficult but maybe that's part of the design. Agreed that the AI pathing works well.

Maybe there could be some sort of progression? e.g. if you win the first time, the next time the game is harder.

@Cerden good idea. Maybe i can add more enemies or different ones at different stages. Left a comment on your game too.

The graphics are simple but, I like your choice of colors. They work quite well together.
As for gameplay, I kinda expected that the ball can actually be kicked. It kinda felt more like playing around with a hockey puck.

Aside from that, controlling the ball around gave quite a challenge. Aiming it at enemies then trying to retrieve it while avoiding the enemies did make it feel like playing in the field. Interesting combo of genres.

Nice funny game, the graphics are simple, however it's a nice work because it's made in very few time! I like the AI behaviour and the mechanics. I think that maybe the map is too big, it could be a very interesting multiplayer game in my opinion!

@riordan I will note 'kicking the ball' on my wanted features list. I actually wanted to implement it during the jam, but i had to cut corners.

@mic_matrix91 You are right about the map. Multiplayer will also go on the features list.

I like the concept! It's super satisfying to destroy the other players, and fun to dodge them. It might be fun to try out with more friction on the ball and requiring the ball to be moving a certain velocity to trigger enemy deaths. Right now it was a little easy to juke the enemies into a stationary ball. Good job getting a playable game starting from Sunday though! One of these days I'll try out phaser.... it's been on my list.

Played this on steam, such a satisfying game!

A great mix of sports and hack and slash, very well executed and honestly had a blast :yum:

Probably some kind of running option with shift would be pretty neat for abit of a boost - Instinctively went for it but it wasn't there :smile:

Other than that, a great game! Wish you the best on further development thanks for making it! :smiley:

@ursagames I can really recommend Phaser 3. The framework has a supportive community.

@PonchoGuy Thanks for the idea with the shift key ;)
