Park & Match by Carlos Giraldo

[raw]
made by Carlos Giraldo for LD 42 (JAM)

It's time to run out of time and get to parking! The objective is to park cars and wait for them to turn fully yellow before you can ride them out of the parking lot. Parking same color cars near each other makes them turn quicker. After a parking space is used to turn a car yellow, it changes to only allow that color to park in the space. Don't let the queue outside get too long or let the timer run out before driving a yellow car out!

CONTROLS: - WASD - Click car to assume control.

This was all produced by me on the weekend except I used an old song of mine and some free font and SFX

Great games, I had a good amount fun playing this. It's a simple puzzle game but with the timer it works really well! I think if you added a variety of car types it would increase the fun of the game. So you got like tiny smart cars and then large vans.

Only problem I had was when the gate closed on a car and it couldn't move and the gate wouldn't open again.

HAhahah good game! first i was just aligning them and didn't get that the yellow car needs to move out. After that, i liked a lot of the game, unfortunately i had a problem that one car got stucked in the gate, and i couldn't control new cars anymore. But this is definitely good, awesome work!

The game was a lot of fun! I never felt pressured because I was running out of space, but more because I was running out of time. Regardless it was quite fun to play, so great job!

Wow, loved it! One of the most fun I've had of the games I've played so far. I think it really conveyed the theme of running out of space, and made me feel really nervous when cars got queued up and I didn't have an open spot for them. Two things that would make this game much better for me:

1) Some kind of score to keep track of. I think I've played for almost 7 minutes before I was finally crushed by number of cars. I would have been tempted to play again to beat this score but (as far as I could see) it wasn't actually conveyed anywhere.

2) At least for my personal play through, I felt like getting cars to turn yellow was never a big issue, so there wasn't much incentive to park same colored cars next to each other.

Anyway, great game! :)

very nice idea. Maybe it would be cool if accurate parking is rewarded a bit, right now you can create quite a mess without long term consequences once the car leaves again. Maybe give a bit bonus time for perfect parking or smth. Or color the actual space taken up instead of the parking slot.

@mukult Thanks, I spent most of the start of the jam on getting the cars to feel good to control.

@shafournee I didn't quite nail the balance for that to happen, which is my biggest issue with the game right now.

14. Aug 2018 · 17:44 UTC
@matank Thanks. I had planned for more cars and even coded some different car types like ones that boost all colors and others that actually hurt other cars and needs to be parked away.

There is a round indicator on the top left which starts at R1. for every x number of yellow cars scored, it updates and makes the game harder.

Didn't nail the balance for the matching to matter much. I think i needed to boost the matching multiplier and nerf the standard tick rate plus add a parking quality measure to encourage better parking plus reduce the spawn rate of the cars so that players spend more time thinking than reacting.

@aurelwuensch Thanks! I had planned to check for parking quality based on how straight you park and balance the game so that one spends more time thinking about space than reacting to the queue of cars

this was a fun game. Controls were very smooth and I enjoyed the challenge. Only thing I wasn't clear on was the scoring system or how I lose... it was tough to understand that part.

Really cool, simple game! The moves very smooth and it's really fun to just smash into other cars until I get a parking space (that's how it ends up going anyway) I think making the time limit a little longer would help overall. Gives the player a little more time to really make a mess of the parking lot. Awesome job!

14. Aug 2018 · 23:07 UTC
@deprecat Thanks! My initial design was that players should spend more time parking cars at advantageous positions and trying to match colors. I kind failed at that balance since it's a more reactionary game now. Messing with the timers are maybe rewarding better parking and boosting matching color boost plus nerfing regular tick rate for conversion could help.

@dominic-graziano Thanks! I spend most of my initial effort on controls. The scoring system is an area that I'm not communicating clearly. I wanted to avoid doing floating UIs and wanted real-world elements instead and was ironically enough running out of space for them. The scoring system is based on X number of yellow cars left to pass through the gate in yellow, and a round indicator which starts at R! on the top left. Also sucks I'm not showing them on the game over screen per se

i like the concept a lot! Having to manage a whole parking lot is a neat idea :)

I found the driving to be a bit frustrating though. I'd bump up acceleration & deceleration a ton because having to do multi-point turns is kind of agonizing. With driving mistakes feeling very punishing, it feels less about dealing with space issues and more about perfect driving.

@robochase6000 Good feedback! My intention was not to be about driving per se so much as choosing which spots to use with which color. So that something I need to make easier to focus on the other aspects.

I think this game is excellent. I am very impressed with the vehicle handling. One could almost call it realistic! The only downside I saw to the experience, is the lack of motivation to do well, especially over time. If this game had a scoring system that is exposed to the player, with various evaluations, this game would be a straight 5 for me. Great job.

The low poly art is beautiful and the car physics are pretty good. I usually don't like these kind of games, but this was enjoyable. I think more things should happen later on in the game, because it became pretty repetitive after the first minute.

Great job.

### Very relaxing game and it fits the theme perfectly!

I liked the idea of telling the player why he lost and what he should do next time to avoid this type of gameover

However, I was unable to download Windows version. For some reason, the file couldn't be found on the itch.io.

Very nice - I like driving cars. The graphics were great and worked together well, and the controls were easy to use. The timer is maybe a bit too short, or it takes too long for new cars to show up - I can't seem to get more than 3 or 4 cars parked. Also, one other thing - the scoreboard doesn't seem to be working, it just shows a 2 all the time :| Great entry though

Yep, this is fine.

Jokes aside, the game was really well done, you managed to fit the theme in well and originally. And the simplistic graphics and sound effects were quite nicely done.

Also, if you hit a car too hard it will go flying, and you can just drive cars right off the road.

But overall, nicely done.

I want to open up by saying I really enjoy this game. It's very similar to an old game I played a ton of on Ouya a few years back. The driving mechanics don't feel 'perfect', but they have a nice arcadey feel to them. The music and stuff works well. It might be fun to have some more sound effects for when you slam into other cars.

I didn't totally understand what the counter next to the timer was telling me. I have no idea how many cars I got through, but it had to be at least 30. A little refining of the driving physics and maybe some cleanup on what the numbers mean, and you would have something that a ton of people would enjoy. That said, this game is still great as it is for being done in one weekend, it just has a lot of potential past LD42, I feel. Nicely done!

awesome! i really liked this game. this was a cool puzzle, driving the cars around made it fun to interact with, way more fun than just clicking colors. the look and feel was solid and the music kept me calm while smashing around and parking like a mad man. i was doing well, and then i backed up a new car up onto the hood of one behind it, and i got stuck and couldnt move it! would also love an e brake :)

@bitdecay Thanks for the feedback! The scoring aspect is one of the areas I'm not happy with. There is a score based on rounds (top left) and cards left to next round (yellow number). But it's not that clear and it's the area I'm going to be changing the most.

Interesting take on the theme.

The game is aesthetically pleasing and the audio part fits well. I played multiple runs on the web build and everything was fine, everything went smoothly.
The level design is well thought, it's minimalist / compact but enough and it helps focusing on the action.

The concept to lock some places to only specific colors is a unexpected and uncommon concept, it adds difficulty without being unfair.

I must admit at first I didn't understand what was the purpose of the yellow board^^" But the gameplay is correct, it's a bit hard to park the cars nicely on some places but I suppose it's on purpose.

Adding a counter for cars parked & "unparked" would be great.

Anyway, great job, especially for a one-person team! :)

And here comes another game to remind me how bad I am at parking. I like the idea and how it interprets the theme. The art is simple and looks really nice. I fail miserably at this game but I can't complain since I am bad at parking both in games and in real life.

Fun game! The graphics are clean and I enjoy the mechanics you implemented. It gets challenging when your previous parking choices end up screwing you out of available parking spaces. The audio is great as well!
I'd like to see colliders along the left/bottom edge of the environment because atm you can drive cars offscreen to prevent from losing. In-game instructions would be nice as well.

Nice game! The graphics and the idea are the best part. I think this game would have been much better if things were a bit smoother. It was difficult to move and park the cars. The other parked cars made it even more difficult and I think there was too much inertia which made it really hard to control the car. Also, I felt that I was lacking the motivation to keep going like money or upgrades.

But regardless, good effort you did there :)

Had a lot of fun playing this one. Definitely takes a couple of plays to get a nice rhythm going on parking the cars and managing the colors. The challenge of switching between bringing cars in, tracking colors, and moving cars out felt like a good balance, though it does get overwhelming quick if you don't manage it properly.

Visuals and audio are great. The controls took a little getting used to at first, but I was able to get the hang of it quickly.

There were a couple of times where I would ram one car into another and it would send it flying off screen. I'm not sure if this was intentional, but it provided good humor on the stream.

Really solid entry and will definitely be coming back to this.

I just played the windows version (somehow my browsers still dont support webassembly). It was fun! Most of the time i run out of time, not out of space. The first turn is very tricky, and i missed it many times. Most of the times the thing goes down while the car was still on it, and then the game gets stuck. or sometimes the car flips over between that pole.

I haven't dont many 3d work but i wonder if the car being flipped over is a lot of physics in unity? it seems like very hard to make for me. The music is a bit annoying but is probably fitting for this game. (oh wait, i dont have to vote for music.)

Well done! ^_^

LOL This game is hilarious. I laughed every time something new happened. So many relatable moments. Someone above me mentioned that hitting a car too hard throws it off the road. I'd like to pretend that is strategy for clearing space :)

The graphics suit it well, and I actually really like the fact that you can park the car anyways you like and it still counts for full points (mostly it's hard for me to beat the timer before the space even becomes an issue, but also because it makes the whole scene look funnier). Super fun and funny game.

Good fun! Parking is always hard, but with the additional pressure of time (a bit less space), it become a bit more stressy.
The controls feel pretty good, and the bumping / flying of cars is quite hilarious.

The time element feels a bit superflous, I would love to play this game with no time pressure, or with a lot less time pressure.
