Water Your Melons by Kciwsolb

[raw]
made by Kciwsolb for LD 40 (JAM)

A simple game about watering watermelons. Use arrow keys to move around. Collect watering cans and water the melons by walking on them. Moving around reveals more of the map. You will need to explore to find new watering cans, but exploring will also reveal more watermelons that need to be watered! Your score goes up with time and the items you pick up. Don't let any watermelons dry out!

Good job on the game. The retro feel worked well and it felt good that the music matched up pretty well with when you could move. It was fun to play but felt a bit restrictive due to the fact you have to keep walking back and forth to melons. One thing you might want to add if you continue on the game is an indicator of each of the melons health so it is easier to work around cycling between them. Overall nice work especially for a first jam entry.

Great art, game play falls a bit flat.

Cool music and graphics. I don't know about the theme: I mean you still have a bunch of watermelons right, how's that worse? It was also strangely moody (with the music and dark desaturated graphics) for a "farming" game.

Anyway, interesting game, fun to play!

What an unorganized farmer! Who keeps their watermelons so far apart?

Nice game, I enjoyed my time with it :)

Nice idea, but there is no way of winning. You have to explore more to find more water. So you not be able to reach the melons in time. A kind of "you must fail" version of tetris. Even if you play only with one water melon which is next to the lake. You can't just take water from the lake. Maybe it is an ocean or I am overthinking this.

But it is realy nicely done. The art is good, the sound is lovely and the animations of popping up tiles are well done. It is not my type of game but it was created with skill :).

Very meditativ type of game, I liked it. Music very nice with the gameplay and there is a strategy element that I didn't expect. Good game mate!

A very charming game with an interesting stylistic choice of having the world fall into place as you explore. Subtly calming yet hectic when I notice there is another watermelon...and then another, ect. Only improvements I can think of would be some subtle character animations (maybe bobbing up and down, a bounce when they move) and there's a tiny graphical glitch which results in the player's eyes disappearing briefly. Overall great!

Nice game, really fun concept albeit a bit rough :
It feels impossible to get all the watermelons or maybe too tedious. I couldn't finish it :(.

Graphics are nice, music is really cool and I love how you delt with the terrain.
Congratulations on the entry !

Cool and retro, It's nice that the tiles float in when you are close to them.

Nice cool game! I enjoyed it. Went well with the music and feel. Maybe it was only me but I think the controls were a bit laggy/slow. Other than that, well done!

Thank you all so much for playing my game! I had a great time making it. I wish I had more time to make the game-play a little more engaging, but it was a pretty busy weekend. All of Friday and most of Saturday were taken up by family activities.

@rob-white I just wanted to mention that the character's eyes disappearing was actually supposed to be a blinking effect. :D

@rakart There isn't an ending to the game. It's just about getting a "high score". After playing it a bit more myself I kinda wish there was an ending.

I like this game a lot, but it did get boring after awhile once I got enough cans to water the three melons I do think this game would work great on mobile devices. Love the graphics and the way the world generated itself. Love to see more in the future if you decide to keep working on this.

Good game, nice art, sound and mechanics. But it falls flat on game design, it becomes boring pretty fast. Next time try to focus a little more on your game design. You would be impressive how much content you can add by just tweaking some values.
