Phool by ciaccodavide

[raw]
made by ciaccodavide for LD 40 (JAM)

The name Phool sounds like "fool", and fool was the mage who wanted to stand above everyone else.

This hunger of power rewarded him with incredible abilities but the more his power grew the more his enemies became envious!

This was the initial idea for this game: the more powerful you become, the worse your challenges will be!

The problem is that I can't really draw...so I went for the abstract road.

I also tried to procedurally generate the music...if you don't like it you'll be able to mute it in the settings ;3

Controls

W A S D + Mouse, Left Click to shoot, hold TAB to see your level and upgrades progression

This is how the game works

Pick up the exp orbs

00_pickup.gif

while running from your enemies, you can shoot them down but if they reach you one life will be lost

01_enemies.gif

Level up and upgrade your powers

02_upgrade.gif

The more experienced and powerful you get, the worse your enemies will be!

The in-game level is different from the player lvl, only a bit of the experience that you'll collect in each run will be permanent.

this is an hint of the gameplay (it doesn't start that fast):

Thanks dude, glad you liked it! :D

This was my first Ludum Dare (not my first jam tho), I'm really satisfied with how I managed to make this game in less than 48h

Great game. The controls and mechanics feel nice. Easy to play and you quickly discover some strategies. I could see myself losing a few hours on this.

The music was also spot on. It fit the game very well and seemed to progress with the pace of the game.

Awesome game! i really like the simplistic art, it suits the "arcady" feel of the game.
Every single life i lost was because an enemy spawned on screen in the direction i was going and it gives me almost no chance of dodging it.

Real good game overall, congratz!

I had to stop myself from playing after a bit... so that I can go rate other games... wonderfully addictive. The upgrade system really helps keep you wanting to try again. I don't know if it's just the webgl player or not.. but the controls got "stuck" occasionally and he would just go speeding off in one direction without pushing anything... it would usually reset after getting hit.

I really like the simplicity of this, in both the art and the game. It's actually one of the games I've spent the most time playing in a single session so far, so that is probably a reliable indicator of the entertainment factor. It's almost meditative to duck and weave between enemies, blasting away and unlocking upgrades - which were a very nice touch and gave a really nice feeling of progression throughout the game. I would have liked to see (or hear, rather) a few more sound effects in the game, and perhaps some kind of feedback when actually successfully hitting an enemy, but otherwise the simplicity of the graphics and sound works wonders. I did seem to occasionally die randomly though, possibly from an enemy spawning right under me? Or maybe I just have terrible peripheral vision and walked into one without realising :D

The way the enemies move is really nice and really keeps the player on their toes when it comes to dodging, that's a really nice touch.

In any case, this is a really solid submission that I really enjoyed playing.

Thanks for the feedback to all of you! <3

@abilean yeah, were you playing in full screen? Because there the controls get stuck if you click outside of the non-fullscreen boundaries

I'll try to fix it!

This was enjoyable to play on stream, cheers bud. I liked the levelling up system, it was challenging, and despite simple style of graphics they looked professional. I enjoyed the idea of permanent upgrades to to make it possible to progress further into the game.

Nice! I like the graphics design aesthetics. Not sure if I was supposed to play it like that, but what I found the most effective was constantly moving down while only using left and right to avoid enemies. Fun game!

The mood of this is great! Frenetic yet somehow meditative. The minimal graphics really help.

Cool and simple game (gameplay and graphics), it remind me Nuclear Throne where you can make your own playstayle (that's cool !) but i don't understand why you got upgrade at hit and why i didn't have upgrade at the begin of my first game (but after i did).
Death can also be super frsustrating as these ball got a super-rapid dash (i died by an offscreen ball last time) and these ones are also a bit too tanky : it's hard to kill a single one with this accuracy so imagine 30...

I love your game. The persistent bonuses make your next runs a bit to easy, but I guess that's why you put a reset button… Very nice submission.

Excellent, the aesthetics, the responsive music, the fastpaced gameplay, all works very good together, congrats! I think the only thing missing in the game it's some feedback when you hit an enemy. All the rest it's awesome.

This a really nice game! Very entertaining and fun, easy to play and keep playing. The improvment system was a cool addition.

I really liked the whole feel of the game, I am glad you took the abstract road as its simplicity makes it shine even more. The sounds also fit tightly with that, not being too distracting and helping with the game pace.

Overall great game, fun and interesting. Great job :)

This. Is. Addictive. I personally like more interesting progression systems, but an incremental progression on certain stats always gets me hooked.

Music's nice and it looks good. Nice job.

It took me a lot of effort to finally put this game aside. The gameplay is really addictive, and the progression system supports it: I really wanted to get more power so I could one-shot these dots. Also it looks and sounds very retro, it feels really nice in its simplicity. I can imagine myself in the middle of the night shooting these dots on CRT display. Also you should add some kind of score system besides level progression.

In overall it's an awesome game! Gameplay is simple, graphics are simple, audio is simple, but together they make nice, warm, addictive game. Nicely done!
