Cultist Clicker by TheseusInABottle

[raw]
made by TheseusInABottle for LD 43 (COMPO)

Sacrifices must be made. But why are we making these sacrifices. The same reason we do anything to watch numbers go up! Click your way through the bodys of as many hopeless sacrifices as your mouse can take, and once it gives out just chock it up to another sacrifice and go buy a new one. Now go forth and click. Click untill you die.

Bugfix Log: After checking the Compo rules and seeing that minorbug fixes are allowed I have updated the games final build so now players will no longer see pints as what they are clicking for and will instead see "Sacrafies".

I'm done, this is getting too crazy, ill leave the tab open and see how far I come.

Overall for a clicker game this is pretty good, one thing I did really miss was the amount of sacrifices per click. At some point it takes SO long to click youre way to the next upgrade. For a first game: pretty legit, put it on my list for games to be rated after the timer runs out.

Pretty good but click should be more satisfying

Pretty nice but, as I understand, there isn't any "big" goal. So, I clicked till the "Murderer" and my patience was over. And maybe It would be better with some BG music. But anyway It's really cool clicker and quiter interesting theme integration)

A decent clicker experience. I like the background image. Congrats on you first Ludum Dare entry!

I missed the distinction between + sacrifices per click and + pints per second, but that could be my fault. The pace does seem pretty slow, but maybe not when compared to other idle games. Nice job on your first LD!

The theme is a bit on the nose (Not that that's necessarily a bad thing). I like that you made sure there was feedback on all of your relevant actions. The layout is simple and effective. Still, clicking as a mechanic isn't very satisfying, so it needs something special to make it feel worthwhile.

@justalocalhero I agree with you that clicking is not a very satisfying mechanic. Truth be told a lot of this game ended up as it did (including the rather slow pace and lack of big goals as mentioned by @sky-coding & @erendelous) due to me seeing the theme and deciding on a clicker without much actual though to what makes a good clicker. Next time I make a game (clicker or not) I will definetly do more research into ideas and mechanics used in other games of the same type to make them more engaging. Thank you for the feedback.

I have another window running the game right now just gradually accumulating. There are too many ??? left obscured. I have not clicked this much since the first Diablo. Nice work on the first entry!

While extremely simple, I am amazed at how long you got me to click a freaking button. I think if you had some solid unlockables that held my interest a little better, you would have kept me longer as well.

Its a classic cookie clicker with sacrifice theme. Works fine but not very innovative. Good job on finishing though!

@seed42 The whole pints vs sacrafices thing is actually a big mistake on my part. At the last minute before publishing the game I changed the idea of what you where clicking for from pints of blood to actual sacrafices. In my sleepy state I forgot to change the code to update the item prices to say sacrifices. Sorry for any confusion that caused.

It's a clicker game... nothing more - nothing less. Would have loved some more effect on clicking.

I love that you changed the cursor to a meat cleaver! As others have pointed out it's your standard clicker style game.

Just a few thoughts for you. The abilities don't display how many of them you have taken. You don't see how many automatic sacrifices per second you have. I would remove the click sound on the body as it only plays after you release the mouse and its really not necessary. More variety in the abilities would have been nice. From what I'm seeing I can only increase the number of sacrifices per click or the number of automatic sacrifices per second. Though, truth be told I'm not sure what else you could have added. So this one might be a none issue.

Congrats on completing your first Ludum Dare! Hope to see you in the next one.

Great use of the theme but feels a little "vanilla." Nothing really different from many existing clicker games out there that helps set it apart, and it wasn't super obvious to me how the upgrade system worked.

Great job completing a game in time though! That's huge and really fantastic. :)

Really could have used better sound design, it doesn't sound very pleasant right now. Also makes me a bit angry that the sacrifice isn't over the pentagram. Other than that very nice!

At first I thought the sacrifice count climbing automatically was a bug, because I didn't appreciate that the second purchase added a number of sacrifices per second. Adding a display like the "1 Sacrifices per Click" showing your current rate of "Sacrifices/Second" might be a good idea.

So, I left the game running since last night when I tested it 21 hours ago. Here's where it's at: ![CultistClicker.png](///raw/ada/e1/z/1e5c8.png) I kind of want to see how this turns out....

Dark, evil mood. Pretty standard clicker game. Not bad, but the interface could use some polish as others have said. Would be nice if the body moved a tiny bit when clicked, and maybe got destroyed after away, replaced by a new victim.

I click run game but it never seems to load in my browser :(

Edit: left window open, watch some videos, came back and it was finally loaded. No idea why it took so long. Anyhow...You hit the theme on the head.It can be more fun when people get more inventive with it but I shan't complain. Being that this is your first LD, I think going with a simple game like a clicker is actually a really good idea. I noticed that for some reason, the prices of upgrades were pretty slow to upgrade, I'm assuming that's a bug. Just wanted to say, great job getting a game completed on your first LD, that's a great experience to have under your belt! Hopefully you'll join us again in this zany tradition.

Not bad for a first game!
It could be better, of course, but I enjoyed it anyway :)
My only issue about it is that the last item on the list isn't as rewarding as I hoped it would.
It could have been something like "Sacrifice yourself | +10 Pints" and then it's the end of the game xD
Anyway, great job, I hope you'll Ludum dare again next time!

Hey, you made an OK clicker game :). I'd advise you next time to give more visual rewards to players as they progress because right now having more sacrifice doesn't really bring us anything other than just generating sacrifices faster. Even tiny visual changes to the character/pentagram could have worked. Congrats on the first game though!

Nice and simple clicker game. Addicting, but clicking could have a bit more impact and feel, such as having blood splatters or gore on each click.

I have never been a fan of clickers because it aspires my sould into the darkest voids of the universe, clicking away my existence into oblivion, but well done; It could have gained to have a little more bait to continue clicking, but it's solid

Nothing ever changes but the list of available stuff to buy. That's why it becomes boring after a very short while. If you take a look at Cookie Clicker for example (http://orteil.dashnet.org/cookieclicker/) you can see how there's always something new going on in the screen when you buy stuff. Not that you should have so much features but you could have something instead of nothing.

That being said, I did click it like a maniac until I had half of the shop unlocked 😂. So good job! The sound effects and the graphics were fitting, would have liked to hear some ominous music too 😈.

Oh man, I did a loooot of clicking, and then I left it running while I tried another game, and came back to play with some of the higher-level stuff. I got up to Blood Wizard, but the fact that the only thing it did was more +sac/sec made me less curious to continue to see the rest of them. I was hoping for some sort of alternate kind of upgrades that would add a little more complexity.

But even though it wasn't full of wild innovation or complex mechanics, you had some nice graphics, and strong theme usage. The meat cleaver was a nice touch, too!

Solid first entry, welcome to the compo!
