Shufflefish by Joel Davis

[raw]
made by Joel Davis for LD 41 (JAM)

Shufflefish is a Deckbuilding + Fishing Sim.

TLDR

Video instructions and quick reference card image later in this post...

DRAG (don't click) cards to the LAKE, the BOTTOM LEFT (tackle box) the TOP (reel) or the TRASH (trash can). ANY card can reel in a fish, the GREEN NUMBER on top-left shows how much it will pull. The PURPLE NUMBER on bottom-right is victory points.

Tackle box equips Tackle Cards (Brown background) permanently. Action Cards (Green background) are instants, activate by playing on the lake.

Yeah it needs a tutorial...

Windows build coming soon....

BUG ALERT: There is a bug that causes extra cards to be stuck on the screen, leaving it there until you restart. I thought I had fixed this 10 minutes before submitting but I didn't. It happens when you click quickly during a card animation, to reduce the chances of this happening try to always drag things and don't click (clicking doesn't do anything anyways).

INSTRUCTIONS

Video Instructions:

When each card is flipped, you can drag it to a few places to play it:

  • REEL: If you have a fish on the hook, drag any card to the "Reel" diagram at the top of the screen. The green number on the top of the card is how many spaces it will reel in.

  • Each space a fish is reeled in increases the line tension by one. Too much tension and the line will break.

  • Any other action will not advance the fish, and line tension will decrease by 1. If the line gets too slack the fish will get away.

  • Drag the current card to the TRASH CAN to discard it.

  • If it's a TACKLE card, drag it to your tackle box (bottom left of screen). You can only have five cards total in your tackle box and you can't replace them.

  • If it's an ACTION card, drop it on the lake to take the action specified. You may also Trash an action card to continue without taking the action.

  • If it's a FISH card, you may drag it to the lake. It will be added to the lake to be caught later.

  • Drag a CAST card onto the lake to cast. Cast will put a fish from the lake (if any are present) on your line. If you already have a fish on the line, you will let it go.

Some cards can kill the fish. A dead fish is only worth 2 points but it never struggles or swims away so it's easier to catch.

This was certainty a unique combination. I thought it was pretty fun and I liked the music and art as well. It was a little buggy, but a strong concept nonetheless.

I don't see the theme very prominent here. That said, it's a very solid game, the graphics and music is great and pushes the mood. I love the 3D pond, even if it does nothing to the game itself.

A deck builder would of course improve the game, but that's a huge pile of work.

Again, I have to say card based games are really trendy on this LD

Outdoorsy on first attempt! I can forgive some of the lack of instructions since you noted you would post them later.

You were along the same lines as us, we wanted to make a unique deckbuilder and I personally wanted a fishing one too. Yours is a pretty unique take, it's not quite a normal deckbuilder but it has some different elements like how the hand and lake all work, I don't even know of an analogy except maybe like.............mahjong........... lol. The bottom portion of the game was iffy and harder to grasp but the top portion was fantastic and a great way to represent fish-reeling points. GJ finishing a card game in this timeframe by yourself, I know our group was coding right til the very end cuz of all the corner cases and such!

Seems like a really neat concept if you took it further! I like the general idea of it, but it was kind of hard to figure out, and there were some bugs. Notably, at one point I tried to play something from the tackle box after I drew a card, but something strange happened and I drew another card on top of the one I'd already drawn, which was kind of confusing. Still, I liked it overall!

I really enjoyed it! The game could use a bit of balancing, and it definitely needs some better visual feedback for what cards do and where and how to use them, but after spending a round or two with the instructions open in the other tab I started really getting into it. The individual rounds can feel short, but probably exactly the right length for the amount of content there. It got very interesting once I was more familiar with all the cards.

For any issues it has, I think the fact that I kept coming back and playing more speaks for itself. It gets its hooks into you.

Game bugged out really quick... dragged one of the cards from my deck up towards the lake and it caused a card to draw while having a card still on the screen. Not sure if it was supposed to? Seems like an interesting game though. Good work! Would you mind reviewing my game? https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/ld41-jam-game
