Spaceloop by smilewood

[raw]
made by smilewood for LD 41 (JAM)

loop2.PNG After your spaceship ran out of StarFuel in the empty space between your home galaxy and the next, you have to leap into action and collect stars to power it up and continue your journey. Unfortunately, in the empty space between galaxies, there isn’t all that much oxygen, so you have to keep running in circles around your ship so that your suit can collect enough to keep you alive.

Collect all twelve of the stars floating around your ship to power it back up and get to your grandmother’s house in time for dinner.

Spaceloop is a fast-paced Runner-Roguelike requiring quick collection of items to avoid being sent back to the beginning.

Use the arrow keys to move and the spacebar to jump. Be careful, if you get behind or fall off of the platforms you will have to start over. You can loop around your ship as many times as it takes to collect all of the stars.

Made as a team by members of the CSU Game Developers Association in 49ish hours (aiming for the compo time) and with no pre-made assets. We used Unity with Visual Studio, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator. We currently do not have sound, but if we get to it before the Jam ends we will add it in.

EDIT: We have sounds in time for the end of the 72 hour game jam! Added sound, squashed some bugs and improved some of the UI.

Team: * Miles (Programming, Unity) * Habeeb (Unity) * Kaitlin (Art) * Dawson Canby (Sound) * Cyane (Background art) * Leo (Stars)

The concept of a looping platform game is really original and funny.
I really liked the theme (I've also created something astronaut related in the previous LD 39, I love it!)
The overall is funny and well builded.
Maybe the graphics can be polished in a post-jam version, this idea have a great potential!
Nice work guys ;>

Movement feels good. I don't really understand the genre matchup, and the mechanics seem limited given the environment layout. Also, no sound when I played (HTML5)

Thanks @corc0 , we don't have sound yet. We may update that later today. The genre match up we had in mind was Runner+Roguelike

Heh, why do I need the spaceship if I can fly by just jumping! Requires lots of polish on everything, good luck next time.

I'm not too sure how this fits with the theme and the animation is a little choppy ... on the bright side there's a nice space atmosphere and the gameplay, though very simple, is relaxing and quite enjoyable.

Controls are very good and fit the theme of the game. Art is also good especially you have done everything during the marathon. Impressive!

The nitpick I have is that the player has a bit too little time during the beginning to move. Since you have to start the game via mouse, it results multiple annoying deaths in the beginning. I would also tune the speed a bit. Overall the game world is too near to the bottom of the screen and player has too little wiggling room at the beginning.

But overall, fun little game!

I don't understand how this is part 'Roguelike' if the map isn't procedurally generated... The only part that's somewhat Roguelike is the perma-death, but lots of other games have that and don't fit the genre.

The Movement, and the assets for the the ship and astronaut are good. The assets for the platforms and some of the buttons are blurry and the background is distractingly ugly, black with much fewer dots would look a lot better I think. The core gameplay is still fun and again these controls are really smooth.

cool game, my only problem with it is the camera, sometimes when i am falling the camera don't go with me, so i can't see where i am falling.

Controls are very smooth and procedural creation fits with the main theme. Nice mood. I would like to hear music and sounds. Well done ++

Camera can move a bit strangely at times and it took a few tries to understand that I could continue jumping. Once I got that down, it was a fun platformer.

I had a lot of fun playing this. Sort of like Jetpac meets Flappy Bird. There were times when I was leaping around in the void that I thought I'd gone off the map and broke your game... but then there were still some stars to collect! The 'Loop' feature is a great addition, I needed a few goes to complete it. A pretty competent entry and one you should be proud of.

Good vibes. Cool sounds. The movement is nice and polished. I'm terrible at it! I kinda wish there was no need for mouse input on death or loop so the gameplay wasn't interrupted.

Took me some time to explore the game: So first I though I couldn't jump over the obstacles or onto high platforms until I found out that I can multi-jump :-) makes sense, why should I need to be on ground to jump in space! I did then very well and had several loops when I fell off the bottom of the world - this did hurt a bit. I would have wished for a small radar scrren in the corner showing me where I am in relation to the ship. A small idea for improvement: the (re)start and loop buttons should be able to be activated via space key - otherwise on ehas to switch between keyboard and mouse whenever a button appears on the screen.
