Chalk Racer! by PSiv

[raw]
made by PSiv for LD 41 (JAM)

My first Ludum Dare is over! I am proud to say I have achieved my simple goal of finishing a game. This game is a racing/maths game, oh yes, steer your car around a track, answer simple arithmetic quesitons to speed up. Maintain a healthy balance of accurate arithmetic and accurate cornering and you could get yourslef a hearty "Good job"!

Controls: A/D to steer S to brake/reverse

*Main menu doesn't seem to be scaling correctly at lower aspect ratios, 16:9 & 16:10 work fine though

LOL. Absolutely brilliant. Had way more fun than I thought and really loved the sounds. Great kids game to teach them maths. Awesome work.

A nice little game, though it's rather hard to multitask - as you've got to keep one of your eyes on the blackboard and another on the car somehow :)

I like the idea that you do not have to count as fast as possible. Sometimes it is better to "precompute" the answer and unleash the boost at the right time :D Good job!

Cool idea and pretty fun  I like that everything (race track, UI, etc.) looks like chalk.

I had trouble looking back and forth between the race track and the arithmetic and making sure to click on the right spot. I'd like it better if there were shortcut keys to pick the right answer, or if you could just key in the right answer on the keypad. That way I could focus more on racing and arithmetic, and less on mouse placement.

This is neat! I had a lot of fun and even if I'm usually good with maths, the fact I was doing something else made me loose all my habits x) The difference between the difficulty levels is good and having this nice summary at the end (got three A :stuck_out_tongue:) complete the whole thing perfectly!

The concept could be easily used to teach maths! Now make more races and let the player decide on which operation to train! Amazing work overall!!

PS: I laughed too hard at your mouth-made noises ^^

First game this jam to which I can give 5 for the audio.

I was surprised because this isn't the first game that I've seen during this jam that used this mechanic, but this was probably the best one out of all those. Of course, it's still kinda hard to look at both screens at once, but I guess, that's just the challenge of the game. It does get a bit tedious, perhaps a shorter track might have worked better. All in all, okay concept, and great execution! The sound effects are hilarious and add so much to the game, so well done in that department as well!

I couldn't control the car properly, but the concept is very original and fun :)

Good job on getting a game finished for the first time, especially a fairly functional one. The car movement felt pretty smooth and it was really fun when you got a few right back to back. Good realistic car noises.

Congratulations on your first jam. You managed to make a really fun game that you should be proud of! I think the voice work was phenomenal, and the blending of the genres worked out really well in the end. It certainly motivated me to hone my math skills! That being said, I found it too easy to lose track of position, crash into a wall, and lose all my momentum, which was frustrating.

@jcwelgemoed @firellon @pavel-smejkal @aaants @maximbegunov @szabe @elmeri @mrchippy @hopgames @niterich Thank you all so much for playing, rating and leaving feedback on my game!

@issac Hotkeys for answers is something that I planned to include but slipped through the net, I have added them to the updated version!

@nonimad I really liked your idea of being able to pick which operations for the questions, so I've added a settings menu where you can do exactly that!

I have released an updated version trying to take on board some of your feedback and adding some extras I didn't have time to fit in originally (AI opponenets to race against) so if you're interested in seeing what has changed please check it out!
