Typerider by Sun Parlor Studios

[raw]
made by Sun Parlor Studios for LD 41 (JAM)

thumbnail_KeyArtHalfSize.png It's a wrap!

It's been a while since we've participated in Ludum Dare, but here is our entry; Typerider!

As this is our first 3D game, along with being our first non-endless game, we are proud to present it.

A combination of a platformer and a typing game, what more is there to love? Try to find your way through underground caves as a little robot who is commanded from above.

There are various commands you can use to roam around the depths:

  • "turn" Will turn your robot around
  • "jump" Will make your robot jump
  • "use" Will let you interact with your surroundings
  • "throw" Will let you throw boxes
  • If all else fails, use "reset" to reset the level!

You can skip the intro of each level by pressing spacebar

We hope you enjoy our little game, it was definitely a lot of fun to create!

EDIT: We did a quick fix to show people that they can skip the intro with spacebar and to elaborate that you can drop crates after picking them up with "use"

Programming - Daniël Konings - Riko Ophorst

Art - Jos van Gils

Audio - Various sources on the internet, of which the music is from YouTube: watch?v=K-aOThIIWU0 (Markdown on LD doesn't support YouTube links without a thumbnail?)

It would have been much nicer if the intro camera pan and countdown was either a lot shorter, or didn't play on reset. I ended up giving up on the shooting level because of having to sit through that scene.

Fantastic environment and great use of the theme, the music gave a lovely vibe and I thoughtit was great how you typed to use the menus.

Great Idea, the later stages got very hard though :) I couldn't figure out what move to do. A suggestion would be to maybe have a 'hint' command after resetting the game 2 or more times :)

Hey all! Absolutely love the game! Really simple idea that's executed brilliantly. The game hits that sweet spot of being slightly frustrating but also incredibly enjoyable. Nice work!

@sun-parlor-studios & @riko-ophorst , well done - incredible game and use of theme. Was an extremely fun game and would definitely be stuck playing it for hours and hours if there were more levels ^^

Neat concept and executed well! Great graphics and sound. Maybe a tad difficult, I got stuck for quite a long time on the crate/electricity level. :(

Great idea and great execution! Did not think about combination of a typing game with a platformer-action of all things. Also love that you took it the ENTIRE way! Not only using the typing input for the character/gameplay, but for even the menus etc.

I am however, a very slow typer, and I got completely stuck on a level because i could not Turn then Jump to get to the next platform. I would have liked a setting to slow down the robot, or maybe be able to type what speed I want to go at any one moment.

A very nice looking game as well! The sounds where a bit repetitive and loud on the robot engine, but other then that It all fits very well with the style. A great entry to theme! Cheers.

@nicolas-tapia The art assets are all made from scratch, only the audio is not ours, but taken from the internet from various sources

The art looks really good, cool mix of hand-drawn and lighting effects. (My potato PC struggled a bit though). The typing sound feels really satisfying!

Really awesome game it just take a min for my computer to process that I typed. So it doesn't react right away a slower character would help or a longer distance between pitfalls.

Nice game, but really needs `stop` command

I have determined that the level designer is a sadist. Despite this, it is the best entry I have played yet! Compelling gameplay from a very solid premise, it has an addicting quality that makes it very satisfying to beat a level. Thanks for suggesting it to me on stream, and definitely have ambitions for this game, develop it more and make some money!

jump jump jump look I can do it so fast now

@pickens-inc The problem is that you need to do a "turn jump" ;) Thank you for the kind words, we appreciate them a lot <3

@gipzo That would only lengthen your execution by so much when you have to start riding with something like 'go' again haha. Glad you liked the game!

The game suffers from a few classic game design flaws such as artificial difficulty. I think if the level design and introduction was a little more methodical in nature and allowed the player to soak in the challenge ahead a little more, it could make for a fun puzzle game. Visuals are top notch and although audio is serviceable, it clashes with the visual feedback.

I initially clicked on this game because I also used the typing genre but stayed longer then I expected due to the really difficult levels. Great entry!

This game is equal parts frustrating and addictive!
I am now a pro at typing jump, turn and use lmao
Here's a clip of me playing it on my LD41 stream last night!

This game is HARD. I'd say it is a bit inconvenient to play, but that is something that applies to almost every game that truly went with the theme and yours most certainly did.
The game also never seems unfair, since it is purely my own lack of coordination, typespeed etc. that makes it hard.
The Graphics music and overall polish are amazing for a jam game. Great job!

I play with great difficulty, but very well finished. Adore the graphics. Congratulations for the game!

I left my rating of your game, if you can leave your feedback in our game, Witch's Escape.

I hope you continue with the project.
