Lava Rider by Linky439

[raw]
made by Linky439 for LD 42 (COMPO)

Are you a cool kid? I mean, are you a cool kid? Like, do you even surf on lava during your holidays?

Well, that's what Zombie Tony does. And that's what you're about to do!

screen_002.png

Your goal is pretty simple: grab some Crystal Coins to get some points and stay alive as long as you can! Use the arrows to move around, crouch and jump to avoid obstacles. The spacebar (or Enter) can be use to validate your choices in the menus.

In case you have to quickly quit your game, you can use Escape to commit suicide...

screen_001.png

You seem to think that's fairly easy. The thing is the volcano who's currently erupting also emits that dark smoke which blinds you more and more as each second goes by. That, and the fact the screen will soon be filled with enemies to avoid. Almost like you're surfing out of space to be safe...

screen_003.png

Oh, and be sure to check out Tony's reaction after each try. He'll say different things based on your rank.

(Also, for some obscure reason, I can't clear the highscore table... Well, guess you'll be able to see if you're better at riding lava than I am! Try to beat my scores!)

Radical, Zombie Tony!

Nice job on the art, I noticed that there are an impressive amount of sprites for 48h.

The game itself was fun, but extremely difficult. I found myself unable to keep up with everything on screen pretty quickly, but it didn't feel frustrating.
All in all, good job.

Probably the most fun gameplay I've seen in a game so far. The movement and all of the different enemies make the game really interesting.

I've noticed a few things about it though that are a little bit annoying. First, the scrolling feels choppy for some reason. I'm not sure why. Is the game running at 30fps instead of 60, perhaps? Second is that while the menu music is really really good, the in game music feels a little bit off key.

Third, and most importantly, the theme feels a little weak. The dust wall doesn't have that much of an effect. I think that the dust wall should get closer when you are hit, rather than having separate lives. This way it always comes into effect, it feels like a integral part of the game, and it makes tension increase faster for players who can't get as far into the game. Every player should have the feeling of encroaching space, not just people who play the game a lot and see very far into it.

Overall though, its a great experience!

Okay, THIS is my favorite compo game I've played so far. It's so good 😄! I think my highscore was somewhere around 150. The game is fun, the graphics are incredible, honestly there's nothing to complain about!

Congratulations for this compo entry ! Love the 8 bit arcade feel of the game. This is a really funny game to play with. I really like the music, especially the one during the intro ! And the humor is priceless !

However I have a few remarks.

The first one is the jump feeling, once you are in the air, it's pretty hard to control. It would have been great that pressing the down button while in air we would be able to go down quickly, in order to make smaller or faster jumps.

The second one is that those green columns are really annoying, once you are too late for your jump, there is nothing you can do except suffer :confounded:

The last one and I agree with @terracottafrog, the smoke feels like it has been added just to feet the theme and give a strange feeling to it, plus it makes things really hard to read once you get to the point where all the obstacles will come at once.

But you did a great job in two days, once again congratulations !

Nice game, and as others have said, really good work on the art :D Amazing for just 48h, you must be quite used to churning out pixel art goodness. The music and sounds are also spot-on.

My main critique would be the retro-ness of the gameplay itself, maybe you could've added some modern QoL stuff, like double-jumping, short/long jump based on button click/button-hold-down, or even proper movement while in the air. Right now it's a bit like "oh, I jumped, now I just have to take whatever comes at me". But yes, I know: 48 hours xD

Oh, also: maybe make the text of the old man and the zombie different colours or something, so you can tell who's talking easier and faster? Just an idea!

@wolfrug thanks :) I guess I am just getting used to 8-bit palettes ^^

Yeah, I agree with you on the gameplay, I may work back on it to add that kind of stuff one day :) Same for the color of the text!

Wow, awesome entry! I love the joking story, few music tracks (incredible for 2 days). And it reminds me very lot Battletoads levels from NES.

Very nice use of retro graphics, gives the game a nice feel, I like the variety of obstacles from all directions, really ramps up the gameplay! High scores was also a nice addition!

Glad I found another project made with game maker :)

The game is simple, but the retro aesthetics and the challenging difficulty makes it something enjoyable.

By the way, is everything so fast that is blurry or I'm getting blind?

Congrats!

I loved the retro styled art and sfx (even though the surfing loop was really irritating), but I would make the gravity a bit higher (I usually do *vsp += 0.3;*). Other than that, it's surprising that you did this yourself in only 48 hours!

@dragojt Hehe, GM is my go-to software since I was 11 in 2005 ^^
The blurry effect might come from the 30 FPS? I kinda had that impression as well sometimes when playing in large screen size...

@nnnikki Yeah, I do realize the gravity could have been better handled. 0.3 would probably have been better for sure ^^
Yeah, I did all that in 48 hours :) I didn't encounter major setbacks while making this game (compared to the previous LD I did), so I managed to work quite efficiently on this one ^^

really impressive for the compo - my only gripe was there was no control in the air - thanks for making this

Beautiful looking game! The audio and graphics are among the best I have seen from compo entries for this jam. As others have mentioned, I would like to have a bit more control over the player, especially while in the air. But this did not stop me from having a ton of fun with this game! Overall great job, really impressed with what you made in 48 hours!! :fire::fire::fire:
