Get all the Wood by GameDevZach

[raw]
made by GameDevZach for LD 40 (COMPO)

Screenshot 2017-12-03 21.17.48.png You are an amazing lumberjack working on building your very own mansion. First things first, chop down every tree in sight!

WASD - Movement Left-click - Chop

The game has an end - though I intended on adding more things like hunting and building, lumberjacking is all I got done this weekend. This is why you always do gameplay before (now unused) shaders ;)

I loved the art, the message, and just wandering around the serene landscape. The deer is super cute, and I only wish there was more to do. But this is great man!

I got all the wood. I guess I wont be building that mansion after all. Cute art style but the game was a little slow until I learned you can run with shift.

Cool. It has all the essentials, running, jumping, and chopping.

The landscape looks very nice, it's scenic. Just needs some more purpose. Also a relaxing soundtrack and some chopping sound effect would have fitted very nicely with your sim. Well done!

I love the moment when the counter switches to air. Also deer animation is the best.

Could you please make the deer's nose wiggle more? Thank you.

I love the message behind the game (I think you and I had fairly parallel concepts) and how players get to "experience" deforestation firsthand. I really appreciated the simple controls and the simple yet scenic landscape too. So many games this LD are overly complicated and this was a breath of fresh air.

I liked the concept. However, the game would work a bit better for me at a x2 / x1.5 time scale. Is the decrease in speed intesional, based on the air left ? Or its a bug because speed is applied without multiplying with the frame rendering time ?

@angelkyriako the decrease in speed is intentional, based on air left. Hopefully your last tree wasn't too far away. Holding shift gives you about 2x speed, but that also decreases proportionally.

then i think it should have higher initial speed, because right now it's too slow =( Also you could just go and jump over the level limitation. But in general it has the best deer animation on LD

Nice experiment, too bad you could'nt finish all the features you did plan (damned shaders :) but that's quite common during LD. I like peaceful games with a message, having a gameplay twist and maybe faster moves could have added some fun to it (It gets really slow at the very end, and I felt like shift key wasn't doing anything :) but the most important is the message you get at the end. Visuals are good looking, good job on lights and small world design. And yep, great thing there is a cute deer :]
Cheers !

it's really pleasant to wonder in the world you ceated, too bad there's no progression when you collect wood. =)

I had to check out your game after I saw you leave a comment on another game where you'd had a problem running their entry so you downloaded their code, fixed a bug, and rebuilt.

Your entry was a cool little experience. Sure, there would need to be more to do to make it a real contender but I enjoyed it. The highlight moment for me was definitely the reveal of the twist. So much of the same thing had happened that the change made me jump a little. Other nice moments were staring at the deer a while, and crossing the rickety wooden bridge and taking in the view.

The art was very nice and this homey little valley worked well. It supported the games message really well that my first feeling was enjoying the nice nature! I also appreciated being dropped straight into the game with no explanation whatsoever. I of course tried WASD + mouse and had zero problem playing. I feel like the "no comment" from the developer regarding what to do and how enhances the message a little bit, because I have nobody to blame but myself.

Nice job! It seems like you had a different initial vision but then when mid-jam you did a good job rethinking it to get to a tight little experience rather than something feeling half-finished.

Hey I played your game on stream! It was fun :yum:

I destroyed all the trees and got the end :yum: It was great chopping down every one!

It would have been cool having some SFX in the game although it was obviously time constrainted it adds to game feel abit and makes tree cutting that bit more satisfying.

With the mansion (If you're taking this post-jam :yum:) It would be great playing on the player's desire to make it bigger and bigger - Stuff like "Just 3 more wood and you can finish the house!" and there's only 2 trees left in the game leaving it on a real cliffhanger and punishing the player for progressing to 'cut all the trees down' like you did here :yum:

Other than that, you can go on and on with a wooden crafting system - You obviously have talent with animation with the deer it would be cool to see that implemeted with the trees bobbing back and forth!

Cheers for the play! Although I think I indirectly killed the deer and me taking down the last tree :yum:
