There were a few mechanics that I didn't get to implement, but I'm happy with how things ended up. There's more than one level, and you can actually advance between them!

Things to Know:

  • Make it round the track as quickly as possible, without alerting the watchers!
  • If you're seen for more than 3 seconds at a time, you have to restart the current lap.

Controls:

  • W/Up: Accelerate
  • A/Left and D/Right: Steer
  • S/Down: Brake

Things I Didn't Finish:

  • Power-ups (e.g. Stealth Mode, Emergency Brake)
  • Multiplayer (hahahaha)

Nice game!

I think you truly found an incompatible combination, damn this game is hard, pretty fun idea, but level 2 is too hard, the car is just so big and the road so slippery , good job tho, really creative

In the first level I thought I could finish the level deja vu'ing my way through the road. But nope :P, the game is hard if you try to finish it as a racing game, but in the moment you start moving "stealthly" you start to see progress. I think these genres are truly incompatible as @Q-ro said. The need for stealth hinders my need for speed. In the end, I finished the game and had fun :) so that's the objective. Good job @Pennycook :)

Game is quite fun as a high score game, the slipperyness of the car adds a nice challenge. Good job.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! I'd thought about tweaking the car physics to make it handle more realistically, but now I think I might leave it as it is.

Wow that car is hard to control, I did make it to the end, once i gave up on trying to go fast. I see another unity developer falls foul of their tilemap bugs, was getting a lot of those grid lines appearing, I've had the same problem in the past. I think there should be a time limit on each level, otherwise you can just go super slow to complete it.

@automatonvx Thanks for the suggestion! I agree that a time limit would be a good way to balance the stealth and racing gameplay better.

I'd like to address the tilemap bugs, but everything I've tried so far hasn't worked. Did you manage to fix this behavior when you encountered it?

@pennycook, yes, the main thing that worked for me was for your tile map renderer instead of using the default material, create one fresh, use the Sprites/Default shader and tick 'pixel snap' on it. Then use this instead. To avoid other weird behaviour you need to get the orthographic camera size set up right too, as described on https://blogs.unity3d.com/2015/06/19/pixel-perfect-2d/ the rest of the info on there is good too. Hope that helps

@automatonvx Thanks, I'll give it a go.

The idea is really good, but the controls and the small narrow roads makes the game really difficult to play. The graphics is good and fits the game idea. The music is okay, but it gets a little bit annoying after some time. Overall a fine LD game.

The car felt a little slow for a racing game, I understand why though because it has to mesh well with the stealth mechanic.

At first I was skeptical about the very slippery physics, but after a while I realised the game wouldn't work without that risk of running into walls at high speed. Also: bonus points for using actually incompatible genres here!

You combined a racing with a stealth game? You Monster! I am so hard loosing in your game, but great idea!.

Ok, I think this is the first game I've played that truly fits the theme "incompatible genre". Some things to note is that the tile grid shows up. Anyways, nice job on the entry.

Physics were frustratingly fun. Music made me go slightly mad! Nice job.

This is a very interesting idea.

The physics are a little too slippery though, and level 2 seems impossible. Maybe if you used bigger tracks it would have made it a little easier.

Congrats on your first LD!
