Sacrifices in the Cat Yard by Lex

[raw]
made by Lex for LD 43 (COMPO)

Cat’s are known to bring dead animals to their owners. But do you know why? I'm pretty sure it's just because they're natural hunters and want to bring you a gift, but you could consider that as a sacrifice, right?

Game is quite simple, just move and jump around collecting as many sacrifices as you can. Be sure to bring them to the front door every time you catch one. Good luck!

Adorable game.
I tried to catch the mouse in the middle but failed, is there any trick for it?

@teapoly Thanks for playing! And yes there's a little trick, that's supposed to be the "hardest challenge" for this game. Just fall or jump from high above to get enough velocity when falling and you'll get it.

It is a nice cute game, which has an amazing twist on the theme.

You deserve infinity stars for the cat animations and the little "prrrp" sound it makes when it lands. :heart_eyes_cat: Very cute game, and a good, uncommon interpretation of the theme.

Very nice game ! Loved the sprites, the audio ("purrrr"), and the music made me laugh out loud o/
Controls are very smooth.
I managed to please my owner, I guess I'm a real hunter now.

Saw you mention this on Elysia's stream, and had to check it out.
I loved it! And we have similar themes!
Took me a bit to figure out how to get that last mouse, but eventually figured it out, and the styoopid human finally accepted all my hard work.

Great entry!

@jcroisant @legulysse Omg, thanks for noticing that little detail. I put it there because my cat sometimes do that when jumping from up high. I realized maybe other cat owners would get that reference, but honestly I didn't really think anyone would notice.

Oh my glob! The cat is super cute!!! The rat in the middle is the most difficult to catch.

It is a very creative theme interpretation. Really relaxing with the music. What about changing the music of the title page?

This is so charming! The art, animation, sound, and music are all just really well done. I enjoyed the variety of mechanics for catching each type of prey - the mice in particular were a satisfying challenge. The last line of dialog made me grin. Great work.

Yes! This is it!
Not just because of the cat, it works perfect overall. I like such game mood since playing the IBM's Alley Cat, which was probably one of first games I've ever played at all. If I want to ever create anything close to this topic, and it is one of my long time ideas, I wish I will be able to make as good as your 48 hour entry :) And those tail moves!

Cute game! The cat's sprites and animations are really good, you captured the cat's pride perfectly. I liked the music and the ending too :)

I love this game! The whole aesthetic is really nice, good job on all the creature sounds and the cat animation. I like how I had to learn how each creature moved before I was able to grab it, awesome design! I managed to catch them all and get the ending. Great job overall!

The sound design is really good.
It even has voice output!
Moving, jumping and landing feels nice.
The minimalistic graphics work just fine, but I had a hard time finding the small lizard (assuming it is a lizard) on the right most wall.

Wonderful idea! With some polish this could become a classic

Good
- One of the most original interpretations of the theme
- Being able to play as a cat is always a plus
- Great lighthearted mood juxtaposing with the "dark sacrifice" of the cat

Could be improved
- Needs more polish: Imagine if there are other cats teaching the player cat that it must sacrifice tiny animals to the "altar"
- Could double down on the stealth aspect of the game, forcing the player to be patient (like the mouse mechanic is very good)
- The graphics doesn't quite do the game justice. In a cat's eyes, everything is very alive, especially anything that moves. Perhaps try to adjust the resolution as well as colour palette? also putting the camera at the cat's ground-level perspective would make everything much more immersive.
- Needs a button to "meow"

Really Cute! As a cat owner I must say the sfx you made is perfect.

I wish all Ludum Dare games were like this. Simple controls, no walls of text, can be played in under 5 minutes. I managed to catch all of the critters (the second mouse was pretty tough to pounce before he went back in his hole). The cat sprite animation was really well done. The title and end screens didn't seem to fit the aesthetic, but maybe that was part of the joke.

Nice game and funny ending.

Some feedback...
- Personally I found the birds a bit too simplified... I was not sure what they were in the beginning.
- I also think the sound in the title screen did not really fit but the music during the game was really nice.

I really liked it! Nice cat!
