Love In The Gaming Club by D-Studios

[raw]
made by D-Studios for LD 41 (COMPO)

This game was made for Ludum Dare 41. The theme for Ludum Dare 41 was "Combine 2 Incompatible Genres". This game fits the theme by combining the visual novel genre with the platformer genre.

This game is a short single-player experience. In this game, players have the option to woo one of four girls in a playthrough. To do this, players must complete a level from a platformer video game for them.

Features:

  • Branching storylines. Wooing a different girl in each playthrough causes different results in the story to occur.

  • Entertaining dialog.

  • Excellent and Intuitive UI.

  • Amazing platformer gameplay.

  • Great soundeffects.

This was an interesting game. I enjoyed the platformer. Some suggestions/issues:

- I couldn't beat the Sarah level with the ceiling hanging because my character would fall off before I could reach the end. I assumed I was just supposed to old Up and Left but eventually I'd fall.
- After playing through/beating the game once, it should either automatically go back to the girl selection screen or give a choice to skip the story. I'd rather play the parts I haven't seen instead of reading through all the dialog again.

I appreciate the different sounding "dings!" Keeps the sound from getting stale. Good attention to detail!

I enjoyed the interesting level design. Hanging from the ceilings to reach the end was something that I thought was really cool. Great work!

Some of the jumps felt like it was just a random chance to see if the physics engine would allow you to pass. Thanks for making an HTML5 game!

I like your choice of genres, and the platforming was great (although the ceiling-walking was a bit too slow). Having background music may have helped with mood, but all in all, good stuff!

A nice platformer, the sound effects are nice, just a few notes:

- On the third level (Natalie) it took me a few tries to get the second jump (from the platform above right of the spawn to hanging onto the ceiling above right of that), one time I seemed to grab on to an invisible wall jutting out from the corner, and another time I made it to the ceiling and heard the noise but it didn't grab on. Also once I got up to the top in my excitement I jumped along and suddenly I respawned back at the start... I think I might have gone off the top of the screen and died?
- After you've completed a level, it would be nice to be able to just go back to the level select screen instead of having to mash space to get to it.
- Speaking of the level select screen, I think it would help if there were pictures of the girls next to their buttons to help you remember which one's which, and give the screen a bit more personality.
- Like @lameosine said, music would help with the mood.
- I didn't like using up for jump, often it's space, and I think it would be great if there were separate buttons for holding on to a ceiling (I didn't mind that for up) and jumping (so I can jump exactly when I want to when I'm holding onto something)

I end a lot of my comments this way but I'd just like to repeat: I liked the game, I'm just really good at using a lot of words to express what I think are a few things that could be improved

@slashee-the-cow Leaving the game screen in the platforming sections results in restarting the level.

Short but sweet. A good homage to Doki Doki Literature Club! The art also had a certain charm to it.

I was actually pretty impressed with how the jumps happened after you stuck to the bottom of a platform. Not sure if you got that physics for free w the engine but it hopped and spun really nicely out of the stick. I like the idea of each girl being a different stage. It's kinda like MegaMan, but a girl instead of a Robot Master. Would be cool to have the girls have wildly different level designs (moreso than currently) but hey, there's only so much time in a jam.
