Baguette Hour by Xenation

[raw]
made by Xenation for LD 39 (JAM)

For most of the team this has been the first game jam so don't expect much.

Baguette Hour is a dungeon crawler where food is your source of power. You will play as a cliché french character of the 20th century, you are lost in caves deep underground. You will have to eat everything you can find to fight against the creatures roaming the caves. Walking long distances will deplete your satiation and you will get weaker but faster. Eating a lot will make you more resilient and stronger but you will be slower.

The levels are procedurally generated for a different experience each time.

The UI is not very intuitive so here is an little explanation:

The loot is not balanced so it might be quite hard to get fat.

Have a good time!

Ooh la la, mugged by barrels. Everything looks really nice, but I'm not quite sure what the point is - and the respawn is too slow! I want to play again and again, let me at them! Nice work, guys. :french_bread:  :french_bread:

What did these barrels ever do to me???

Some of the tables had stacks of cheese on them that I couldn't eat, no matter what I tried. I'm not sure if that was intended or not, but it was confusing since I was able to eat the cheese right next to it. Maybe I was just expecting more types of food.

Is there a way to regain health? Most of the time I died because of those barrels. I'm wondering what the croissants on the top right of the screen meant too. Now I'm hungry.

Well done on the random generation!

Never thought I'd go around beating up barrels with a baguette. Controls well, though the responsiveness on hitting and getting hit feels a little rough and I found myself wondering which bar dictated my health. Other than that, full marks!

You get a hon hon from me, for meme's sake.

Love the theme! Brilliant. Sound would have made it a lot better feedback wise, but overall it's fun! Damn barrels.

nicely fits the theme, and a pretty unique take on it, never expected to be beating up barrels with a baguette. graphics were nice and clean, and the barrel's animation was solid. one thing i would have liked is if it were easier to tell if you've hit a barrel. overall, good job! :^)

The mechanic where as your meter decreases you move faster, but get weaker, is actually really interesting, and I'd love to see that expanded on. The game is fun and plays well, though it's hard to tell if your attacks are landing with no sound and no visual indicator.

Really nice graphics (helped set your theme really well) and random generation! Would have like a progress counter (if there is such a thing) as I descended down the levels. :bread:

Interesting idea, I do love me some baguettes! I too was wondering what each bar was indicating. I suppose the one on the right was a walking meter, and the one on the left was health? What was the icon of the croissant (at least I think it is a croissant) for?

Controls are ok but I kept getting caught on tables and stuff, and wasn't really sure if I was hitting the barrels with my baguette. But it is just a baguette. I should be eating it instead!

Great entry!

Visuals are nice and coherent. The gameplay needs to be fleshed out more. I like that the character was responding fast enough, and the idea of satiation is interesting, but the combat was lacking feedback.

I would have loved to hear some accordion music to fit the French cliché ;)

Never thought I'd fall to barrels. Great game but I wish there was sound! I feel like there's a lot of opportunity for the gameplay to be funnier with sound :) Good job overall!

I got really excited when i saw the game, and I was not disappointed when I played it! Really nice graphics for a 3 day jam. Did not really get if there is an objective in the game, should i simply stay alive as long as possible or escape the maze, maby you should add an explanaition in the beginning, but hey, its a 3 day jam, the game is awesome anyways!

Pretty and cool idea, but got "barrelled" too fast! I'm not sure what the controls are in HTML except for walking ;)

Great graphics and controls. The whole situation of walking around with a baguette is very funny. At first I thought the map was the same but on my third try I noticed things were different ... thats when I realized it was procedurally generated (which is awesome!).

Would have increase the immersion with some sound but I guess sometimes you don't have time to do it all :P

Good job overal.

Loved the art style! My one complaint is that attacking felt a little clunky, and every time I had an unsure feeling if I was going to hit one of those bloody barrels. Keep up the good work!

wow, someone made a 3D game. I love everything about this game, especially the low-poly graphics.

I appreciate the frenchness and the baguette-ness! Tres bien!

At the moment you lose health really fast and you can't attack whilst moving which leads to the tactic of entering a room, stopping at the enterance and clicking until all the enemys die which is a little unengaging gameplay wise. Also, as odd as it sounds, the bread/energy meter goes down too fast and there's too much bread! What I mean by that is I don't think I ever managed to get fat but at the same time each room almost always had one to two loaves of bread in it which meant I was never thin either unless I messed up badly. In other words for almost all of the game I was in the least interesting normal mode and I would have liked to vary my play style a little with the other two modes (providing that the first issue was fixed).

Other than that, though, I do quite like this game! The aesthetic is bang on and I like the procedural generation / darkened rooms before you enter!
