Changelog:
``` v1.12 - Fixed some additional aspect ratio issues with the mobile version
v1.11 - Fixed some aspect ratio issues with the mobile version - Default latency adjustment to 50ms (pretty arbitrary, but a better guess than 0ms) - Turn predictive audio on by default (dynamic audio is nice, but the timing difference can really throw you off) - Recommend predictive audio a bit more strongly now
v1.10 - By popular demand, added a detailed audio latency calibration screen with support for automatic and manual calibration as well as in-game testing - Added a toggle for predictive audio - enabling it will play slash sounds exactly in time with the music instead of responding to your input (recommended for devices with high latency) - Fixed buttons in the main menu being clickable during screen transitions
v1.09 - Fixed a issue in the web build that caused songs to not resume properly after pausing
v1.08 - Shortened description for Shamisen Shootout in web build so it's not cut off - Fixed a small typo in the jukebox description for level 4
v1.07 - Added level 6: "Yakuza Bathhouse" - Added level 7: "Shamisen Shootout" - Added level 8: "Katsujinken" - Dramatically shortened music load time, especially for the jukebox screen - Added a link to the Cocoa Moss website on the credits page - Use box outline instead of dashes to show selected option throughout the UI - Jukebox shows currently-playing song in gray instead of yellow - Jukebox now automatically plays next song after current song is finished - Tweaked some jukebox descriptions slightly - Preserve previously-selected choice in main menu - First mobile release!
v1.06 - Speed up fadeout/fadein at game startup a bit - Allow pressing enter to exit the tutorial
v1.05 - NEW LEVEL! Level 5: "As the Cherry Blossom Falls" - Added level number and song title on a dropdown sign at the beginning of each level - Adjusted animation speed of conveyor belt to match tempo of song - Fixed missing nipples for one of the people sprites (oops)
v1.04 - Adjusted hair positioning and make indicator line appear sooner, to give more advance warning for the first slice - More accurate audio sync, and smoother scrolling for the indicator line - Added gamepad and mouse support - Fixed a visual glitch when showing the loading screen before the doors fully finished opening
v1.03 - Added a victim to the intro of level 4 so it's not as long of a wait before the song starts - Very minor tweaks to all of the music
v1.02 - Added roll call numbers to the blank signs that the people are holding (this was planned from the start; just didn't have time to do it before) - Added the menu and results screen music to the jukebox menu - Added song names, and full song descriptions and write-ups to the jukebox screen
v1.01 - Added a pause screen - press Escape or P to pause during a stage (you can exit the stage from this screen) - Reduced global volume to avoid WebGL audio compression (eww) - Performance tweaks to avoid small hitches during gameplay, especially on the first note of each session - Fixed sfx failing to play if you slash too quickly - Smarter placement of blood slashes (no more bleeding between people's legs) - Don't allow slashing above a person's head or below their feet (no more bleeding floors) - Fixed a minor looping issue with the blood effect animation
v1.00 - First release ```
Loved the music and the graphics and the game idea, the little animations that really make it fun to play. The last level is a bit tricky with that syncopation, but it's also adding some cool challenge.
Rhythm games are easy to mess up, but you've nailed it here! The effect when you miss a beat was a little disturbing, but that pressured me to work harder. I really had a blast playing this one!
Be it the music / sounds / graphics / gameplay / humour / take on the theme / whatever, it really worked for me!
Apart making me realize I'm not fit to be a barber :p I really enjoyed playing your game, refreshing, funny, a good music to shake your head in rythm. The little dance of cleanly shaven guys is a nice and funny touch.
I didn't encounter any bug, all went smoothly. The music was well synced with the game.
As I said earlier I loved the art.
Great, great job!
* On the title screen I didn't figure out at first that space was what would start/select and I never got what would have allowed me to see credits and such.
* It would have been nice if there were more than one fail sound that the characters made. Especially to differentiate between getting cut/bleeding versus forgetting a piece of hair. A variety of success sounds (e.g. "Arigato") from the different characters would have been nice too.
* It would have been nice to know how far you were in the progress of the level/song. Maybe there was some meter, but I didn't see it. Would help keep focus and go for perfect cut and such.
I should have played thisone before Good Night Sheep ^^
I had just one difficulty to figure out the controls at the title screen, but the rest is all right!
Congrats and a great entry!
Our entry is also Japanese-influenced. Play it and let us know what you think!
I came here from Goodnight Sheep (which is also super great) after seeing that you made two games, and couldn't believe that both would be this good. Amazing work!
This is fun, this is fast, this is sooooooo cool
Despite having liked, I'm a really bad samurai shaver =P
One minor issue I noticed is that there doesn't seem to be a way quickly restart. This is annoying if you're trying to perfect a level. I played the compo version for rating purposes, so this may have been fixed in the post-jam release.
Everything fits together so well to create a coherent whole. The art style and to music match greatly. I admire how you fuse the classic Japanese composition with authentic samples to a retro chiptune sound. May I ask what tool you used to compose it?
The gameplay is super tight and the visual and auditive cues are flawless, from the the guys bobbing to the beat to the game actually showing you the rhythm in advance without taking the player off the action for too long.
The humor is also spot on. The basic premise alone is hilarious, but the execution with the gushing blood, surprised faces and the funny audio effect makes this a masterfully crafted experience.
The difficulty ramps up nicely as well. In the beginning still very well manageable, it turns to off beats and triplets in the final level.
The only complaint I may have is that the theme feels a bit shoehorned, but that's really nitpicking for a great game as this.
Definitely one of my favorites of LD40. Great job!
The first three levels felt too easy, but that's probably good.
Scores after first try:
Level 1: 12/12
Level 2: 9/10
Level 3: 10/10
Level 4: 9/14
I'm definitely keeping the video for reference later. My next goal was to get learn modtracking software, something I've wanted to do for ages.
I'm really bad at rhythm games but I still like them especially for their music and sometimes for their visual styles like Rhythm-Heaven. And you guys have both of those down perfectly. I can't wait to see other games from your team! I'll go comment on Goodnight Sheep now!
Btw, our entry is also about body hair, but with a completely different approach ;) I bet you'd like to check it out!
If theres anything I can complain about, its as others said that the very first slash is supposed to occur the very second the guide starts coming down for some shaves, but thats likely just a failing of my own bad sense of timing :)
Definitely one of my favourite games so far this LD round!
Great work! :D
It perhaps could have used a bit more theme connection, but it was clear to see how the theme inspired it. I think my favorite part of this game is the unique twist on the rhythm game genre! Good work!
