Password Camp!

Inspired on "Friday The 13th" for NES.

Theme interpretation

  • "Run out of space"
  • A guy runs out of space for memories in his brain. And what he remembers is crucial to advance in the game.

Objective

  1. Kill zombie priests to obtain potions. You'll need them.
(Don't worry about using them, as the game makes Billy drink one if he's low on health and it has just been hit).
  2. Go inside cabins to obtain clues to where your murderer is located.
  3. You only have 3 slots of memory, you have to decide if the information presented to you is worth remembering or not.
  4. Once you have enough clues you can go into the direction you think your murderer is, and if you really have all the clues, then the guard will simply let you pass.

Constraints

You need all 3 memories to quit the city.

Notes

  • Dying doesn't erase your memory.
  • If you loose at the final boss you can keep trying. The guards die once you see the final boss face.

So Theme

You run out of space in your brain... 'cause you're dead... so there's that.

Personal comments

  • Due to pico 8's token limit I had to cut out a pseudo 3D cabin section.
    ld42_9.gif
  • I had planned 5 cities, but could only make one D:

Hope you enjoy the game!

Really interesting play on the theme - this is something I think could be fleshed out into a really cool adventure game! I couldn't figure out how to leave the area though - it said I got the password to the east city but the guy to the east wouldn't let me through. I feel like I missed something obvious...

Other than that, great graphics and music, and fun gameplay! You Pico8 games are always a blast to play!

@conorod

I knew I had went to confusing on that :\, to leave the area you need all 3 memories.
There are 5 cabins total, so there are 2 memories you don't need.

thanks for playing man!

Pretty groovy art design. Definitely a flash of the past in this one

This was fun. Like @conorod said: the music and graphics are great!

I'm a little confused about what happened when I was playing, though. I was just walking along and then suddenly I was fighting a large version of a smaller boss that I'd died on. I defeated him and it said I won, but I hadn't been into any of the cabins and had only found one memory...

Welp, no way I can be objective about this one. Even as a kid I knew it was bad but I _loved_ the Friday the 13th game for whatever reason, and your homage, from the visuals to the controls to the music, is great.

@pennycook that's not supposed to happen :(

The coordinates must have been screwed. The fight with the final boss happens when you get past the guards on some side.

Thanks for playing!

Kept me busy for a while, good effort. Maybe boss monsters are too easy? Some more balance on the mob spawns ?

Really liked the take on the theme. Could easily see where you're going with it. Also, the gameplay was nice and smooth. Very nice.

This was a fun little game! I got good at fighting the monsters in the cabin after a little while and the game got much easier. Music was simple but worked well! Also, I liked the graphics and the PICO8 delivery.

A couple suggestions:
- The zombies come up out of the ground but your bullets pass through them until they actually start walking. It would be nice if I could hit them as they were rising.
- It was really unclear what I was supposed to do with the memories. I got the memories of my murderer in the west and the passwords to get in and out, but he didn't let me through. I wasn't sure what else to do so I didn't complete the game.
- It would be nice to be able to see the memories that you are overwriting before you choose to lose one. At the end I wasn't really sure what memories I had, which might have led to the problem with me leaving to go west.

Nice work!

Hey good job! You pulled off the NES aesthetic very well in both sound and graphics. It would have been nice to have some variation in the mini-bosses in each cabin as I was able to find a gap in their pattern where I could stand still and not get hit.

@minibobbo thanks for the comment. You mention interesting things. The first suggestion you make was intentional, but now that you mention it, maybe it wasn't the best choice.

@arch you got it! I do the same :P

Thanks all for playing!

Really nice game, but I have no clue how to progress, I collected memories, forgot what I've already collected and started overwriting them at random :P

Very nostalgic art out there, even the loading screen. The sounds match the mood and the game is quite challenging (for me at least).

Liked the entry very much and had a good time playing it.

Hmm... I was able to get to the final boss with one hint only. Still the game is a piece of natural old-school fun! I really admire your skill of creating a catchy melodies, they are wonderful! Solid work!

This game was really cool, the mechanics feel solid and the shooting was smooth. The mini fights felt nice, the potions were intuitive and i was so glad when they auto healed. I got confused as things progressed when things changed randomly. I liked the boss and mega boss fights. I had to think what tactic i wanted and was suprised when i couldn't just settle on one tactic to win. :D thanks for the fun!

I liked it very much, played like a NES game in so many ways: Action, exploration, a bit of puzzles... very nice!

I've never played Friday the 13th but I did see some videos of it and so it was instantly recognizable. I enjoyed the fighting, but the memory gimmick seemed like an afterthought, as it didn't fit very well with the rest of the game. How about: you need to collect some items (by beating each of the cabin monsters) in order to access the boss area, but those items take some space in your inventory so you can't carry as many potions anymore, making the game harder as you progress. Currently the game instead gets easier because as time goes by, we get more and more opportunities to grab potions!

Hehe, this is so old school! The aesthetic was great and really brought me back. However the mechanics were also just as unintuitive as old games...probably could have done without that part, haha. I played through the whole thing, was simple but didn't get overly stale.

YESSS! I really enjoyed this. The style was clean, the assets were polished and the ending was brilliant.
Great job on this, I really like it!
