I had no idea what I was doing but I won.

I have to admit, the overall presentation was at first a bit offputting for me. However I gave the game a try because I like the aesthetic you where going for and after some getting used to the kind of unpolished controls I started to really enjoy my time with the game :) It reminded me of a mix between something like Doom and Sonic Adventure (yea... weird I know). I really started to like the core concept and managed to beat the big purple demon thing (best ending! <3). I would love to see this a bit more polished because I really believe this can become something really cool and fun to play! <3

The final boss is very nice! I couldn't really grasp how to defeat the boss, but driving the car was fun enough.

@Siactro Thanks for the feedback! Completely agree with you about the unpolished controls just wondering if there was anything specific you found awkward. (For me i think the reversing is pretty jank?) and yeah about the sonic adventure similarities weirdly enough that's something we actually spoke about mid development of how the car would damage the demon dude, not sure if you've noticed but there are these reticals that appear when you're near the two eyes in the hands of the boss which were initially used as a "lock on" type attack in which (Like in sonic) once they aligned you could do a dash attack that would automatically hit the boss in those crit locations although we scrapped this idea shortly afterwards as we couldn't get the "feel" of it satisfying enough, any thoughts on if it were a 4 player coop type game?

The gameplay was quite fun and the graphics where amazing. The graphics of the boss reminded me of some anime games and I really liked the art style in general. Sometimes the the character movement felt a bit jaggy like the player skipped movement in some frames like he moved in fixed update. All in all a very good and fun game though

- Also is there a way to get the source?

Oh sweety Lord - this aesthetic is gorgeous. How do you did that? Nice entry ++

@Lukesta Glad you enjoyed it! and as far as the Jaggy movement goes I think you're completely right looking back on it there is input registration during fixed updates, mainly because at the time i didn't think about this and just thought "since i'm using rigidbody physics its goes in fixed update" where as thinking about it now I should have registered the player input within update but acted the rb movement in fixed update , also i think the rotation suffers from similar problems but since its done using euler angles it should've just been completely moved to update.

Also we'll upload the source unity project for anyone to download and look at as long as you don't mind terrible naming conventions and sub-par programming techniques :P (You should be able to find a source project download on the itch.io page you download the build from).

@Geckoo1337 Thanks, the boss and the pool he's in was actually originally meant to be made of lava so was textured to look that way, but we hue shifted red through to purple after messing around with the final texture, this lead to most of the games color scheme.

Using colored lighting and post processing effects was a quick and easy way to fake quality.

Many elements in the game, like the car, boss and some of the hills are rendered with a free unity shader called MK Toon - https://assetstore.unity.com/packages/vfx/shaders/mk-toon-free-68972

@lukesta
Cheers, The source files have been added to the download page.

I really enjoyed the graphics, particularly the lighting i found matching the toon shading very well. the game was pretty confusing initially but once i realized i could damage the monster

Your graphics are just awesome! i opened the source, and... wow, so much work in just 3 days. The game is pretty easy. Gameplay is... uh! driving a drifting and jumping car in a boss rush x) it has to be something special x)
4 players coop could be interesting, but i'll never find 3 friend to play it with me ^^ (but i don't play multi/coop games)
I don't know if you plan to continue the dev, but, this game is one of my favorite of this jam, Well done!

@Mowztouch Thanks so much! Yeah the game is pretty easy. If we do decide to take this concept further either in this project or something else from scratch i'd be sure to at least make it a challenge, although in this case I feel that its easy due to not having a diverse range of attacks the boss actually does resulting in very few spots around him that he can physically hit.We did want the tentacles on his back to stab downwards into the ground around him but were struggling getting this all set up in the animations in time (We would've needed to play around with IK quite a bit and both of us aren't too experienced with setting up IK in unity itself) also I guess it didn't really end up a "boss rush" game and instead just a "boss battle" game, since we only found time to make one boss and didn't even get that refined completely, for example we wanted to have it so you could actually shatter the eyes in his hand if you hit them enough but forgot to separate the eyes from the rest of the body in the fbx file itself.

As far as the gameplay goes i'd really love to hear more about how you found driving the car and whether the experience of the game was fun rather than just a cool trippy visual.

@snok-trok haha ok so that's why the console always said "animationEvent send message, rightHand has no receiver" ^^
For my game too i didn't had the time to polish anything, it's full of bugs x) I continued the dev throught, short project but could be fun.
I really liked the drifting movement of the vehicle, remembered me some oldschool gameplay like Street Racer on SuperNes days ^^
A dash attack, even on the ground, could be a great idea, it could add precision to the movement.
I thought to Sonic Adventure final boss too ^^ could be fun to roll to the head of the deamon... like Sonic would not be affected by gravity or normal physics when in an action.
I found the movement as nervous as i like, mush more intensive than some other car/race games of the jam.
The cool trippy visuals made why i came, (the picture remembers me Evangelion :p), i think the game in itself would make me stay !

I like the basic idea! However, I had no idea what I was doing the whole time. You don't even explain the controls on this page :D And then there where 3 gauges I had no idea what they were reffering to. Anyway, driving that car felt quite fun and the presentation is really good, so I drove and jumped into that boss until I figured his health bar could be the blue one. Which it apparently was, since I was suddenly greeted by an insane end screen :D

@beebo-studios Thanks! yeah I've had a couple of people saying that the game doesn't really explain anything to you and it's quite apparent since you know , you load the exe and suddenly you're fighting a demon.I'd like to just put it down to running out of time but its not entirely true its more my focus wasn't as efficient as it could have been so to me, since i programmed all the controls, I knew how to play it and didn't think about it from a new players perspective so it's great to have these things pointed out to me! Not sure if we will continue development on this one but ill definitely at least add the control setup to this page. Thanks again!

Great Game! It has the spirit of the theme, the controls are ok, its get easy to play very fast. I love how the car can get fast with the boost. Good sound and Art in general!

It took me a little bit to figure out what I was doing but I really enjoyed it. The car had a lot of control-ability which makes it feel good for driving through the obstacles. The music was really nice too. It could have used some more sound effects to show when you are being damaged and the demon should have been more T H I C C.

@MrChippy Good to hear! Yeah the sound effects were a very bodged part of the game since we were already 20 mins into submission hour before we even had a sound effect for when you damage the boss made, so unfortunately they're not great at telling the player what happened and the mixing isn't great, you can barely hear the driving sounds.

@Guilb Thank you! any thoughts on ways to improve the controls?
Guilb
08. May 2018 · 17:26 UTC
No.. the controls are good, but you dont have enough space to drive, and it feels like you have to drift all the time, maybe some more alternative bridges to drive across and ramps to acess other levels of the stage. The game is awesome anyway.
