Hitler Groove by nikincz

made by nikincz for LD 41 (JAM)

Hitler Groove

The time came for the World War II... Except this time, the battles are fought by dance battles between the leaders!
Theme: Turn-based strategy + Rhythm game

Due to time constraints, I was unable to finish or debug the game properly.
Programmed in JavaScript from scratch; zero libraries or previous code were used.

Things planned for the post compo version

When the post compo version is ready, I'll put a notice on the site with the game and create an LD blog post. - More playable countries (all of the orange regions; 18 countries to be exact), each with unique song. - Better song maps for currently playable countries. - Actual strategy elements like repostitioning "crowd" for support and easier difficulty. - Dance animations for the leaders, including Adolf Hitler, Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin and more. - Diagonal arrow layout, DFJK layout. - Desktop version with controller and dancepad support. - ? Ports for different platforms.

Very interesting! +1 for histroical accuracy :joy: Actually very fresh idea to mix a RTS and DDR/Rhythm genre. I will definetly try the post compo version!

Theme is funny :p Maybe you should try to make a version of your game where the arrows are coming from the top to the bottom of the screen ? Arrows moving upward are quite strange, but I get used to.

Dance battles between the leaders, that's how wars should be fought :D

When I first read the instructions for the game I thought it could be pretty interesting, but I got a little bit disappointed. Don't really feel like it is a mic between genres, more like a skin for a DDR clone. I also feel like there should have been some better feedback to the player when hitting the arrows while playing a song. Was also hoping for seeing the leaders actually dance :P

This is amazing. I work with a chap who's very closely associated with both wargaming maps, and DDR, and if you polish this game I would love to try to persuade him to review it on Twitch or Youtube.

Give the countries a more polished look on the map, and maybe some tunes that are appropriate or inappropriate to this era and it could be great fun :)

It would be great to see animations of soldiers dancing or vehicles driving in particular order to the beat :)

But as it stands it's still a cool idea and a fun game :)

If you can check out mine, review it and let me know what you think :)

@mambojambo You're correct on everything you say and I agree that the jam version is quite disappointing. The game is extremely unfinished at the very moment, I barely finished the little that I have. I'm working on a post-jam version that will include real connection between the strategy part and the DDR part, arrow feedback, animations, vibrant backgrounds, and more. Thank you for feedback!

@ian1337 The animations of leaders dancing were the main thing I wanted to have in the game, but there wasn't enough time for that after I barely finished the little that I have. Thank you for feedback!
