Unwelcoming islands by AlexKishchinskiy

made by AlexKishchinskiy for LD 42 (JAM)

The kingdom has fallen and settlers take sales to new lands. They arrive to archipelago. Now they need to find space on it for everyone. Fight monsters, acquire new territories. But mostly important – find place to live for everyone.ScreenShot.JPG

How to Play: 1. Click on the island to take control. Empty (grey) islands are taken immediately. Enemy (red) islands require from you to put equal (or more) number of settlers to the number of enemies their. You may increase number of settlers of enemy island to increase speed of take over. 2. Islands, cleared from enemies, will produce food as well. 3. There is panic level among settler. You will increase panic 1) for each enemy island which is connected to your islands (green) and 2) if amount of food produced is less then number of settlers. If panic level is maxed - you loose. 4. Every 5 seconds 5 settlers arrive. If you manage to keep panic level below max when all 50 of settlers arrive - you win.

Known bugs: 1. If you stay on initial island, you will win. It is balance problem. 2. You may place more settlers on enemy islands, that you actually have

I don't really understand why or how I won after taking control(?) of 6 islands. But the idea is very strong, and I think if I had a better understanding of the game it would be fun.

The game is a bit confusing... I win if I do nothing and most of the time loose if I start taking over the islands. I probably lack the understanding of the mechanics or the game is possibly buggy but either way I like the idea that I believe is behind it.

Great concept,
like mentioned in @conorgrocock's post, I also ended up winning while I was controlling only a few islands.
If you could display a bit more visual indicators, that would be great.

Nice game nonetheless, well done.

@conorgrocock @theomelet @eptwalabha Thanks, guys! @theomelet Yeah, I see the bug now - if you stay on initial island - you win, balancing problem. Also, there is constant debuff for the lack of food, now I understand, that there should be progression - the more is the shortage, the more is panic debuff gained. To win by taking the islands - you need to go as fast as possible to the right side islands and minimize number of neighbor enemy islands. @eptwalabha Yeah, you won because the won condition is get all 50 settler without maxing the anger indicator. Maybe I should rethink winning condition. It is one of my first games, so thank you guys for encouragement!!

@skyrex Hey! Can you please elaborate - what was bad and how to improve it?

Generally game is boring, there's only one thing to do and game goes slow so that isn;t interesting.

Took some time to understand it, but its a neat entry! Maybe you could include more indicators to tell where the panic is coming from (e.g. a "+panic" at connections between enemy and your island). Also it's a bit strange that you can put arbitrary many people on an island. After figuring out that I could easily "rush" the whole island.

@oadt Indicators is certainly right idea! Thanks for spotting the bug about number of people on island - initially, you should not be able to put more than you have settlers.
