Use Your Space Wisely by cptalbertwesker

made by cptalbertwesker for LD 42 (COMPO)

It's a hard life when you can only muster together four boxes to contain all your godly possessions.

Unfortunately you live that life, and you've got to move sharpish, so there's no time to pop to the neighbour's and ask to borrow a box!

You must pack as many items as possible into your four boxes, and get on outta there!

Only problem is the only boxes you have are four boxes meant for vending machine bags of Galaxy Minstrel's the deliciously chocolately sweet with the delightfully crunchy shell... so they can't hold very much, and they aren't meant for very heavy contents, so see if you can actually pack everything!

Another game about packing? I suspect there'll be a few. I didn't have very long for this jam so I stuck with something straightforward. I had made something similar for LD37. Let me know if you have any problems! I actually wanted to make this when remembering a conversation very recently with my partner and his packing 'skills' so I had to make a game where you can overpack a box!

As a side note, annoyingly the font I was using did not have a £ sign, so the game talks of these mythical dollars.

Made in Game Maker Studio 1.4 utilising Paint, GIMP and audacity. I usually draw cute graphics, I've had a rough week so I went with a photo style similar to my LD30 entry which I enjoyed creating the assets for! (not usually the case).

A nice, quick and easy game that was fun for a bit. My only real complaint is the very generous collisions; some items can be barely touching the box and still count.

Hey there, sadly i can't play the game. It seams that both links you provide are for the game maker project instead of the executable. If you fix that and answer on this comment, so that I get notified, I will give it a try. :)

Cool idea, good use of the theme and the graphical idea serves the concept well. The gameplay was a little frustrating, both due to the trial-and-error nature of the weight mechanic and the way the items would snap out of the box when they wouldn't fit. Some sort of way to identify when things are too heavy before packing (lift the box and see if it sags or something like that?) as well as some tweaks to the drag & drop behavior might help things feel a bit better. Still pretty cool, nice work!

I like the idea, and I like the photo aesthetic, but the game suffers from poor communication with the player.

The hitboxes are unpredictable; often I'd place ex. two pots where there is a large gap between them but the game would throw them both out of the box.

The amount of weight that a box can carry and the weight of the individual objects isn't shown anywhere. Not even an approximation. I know that I can pack 1 item per box, but the game penalizes me for doing that. So I'm left with a game where every box I send has a 50/50 chance of failing or success. That's about as fun as repeatedly flipping a coin.

The value of the objects isn't specified either so I can't even prioritize high value items.

The menu design is great; I like the animations and the photos are really clean. I want to find something to enjoy about the gameplay but there is no information I can use to work out how to play this without prior knowledge of the weights you've assigned. Even a manual would help.

Fun idea! The use of photos make it look very nice. Easy to understand the controls directly which is a big plus. Would like to have some more explanation on how to "win" and maybe also some soundtrack in the background.

broke 0, left 50 :)
some people have already said it but, yes, the game needs to give more information about prices of an object, its weight, how much a box can carry and a more consistent collision(maybe even using a grid)

Cool! I really liked the art style and animation of your game. It made it feel different than the other entries. I also liked that there was a decent amount of different objects and you really had to think about what's heavy and what would fit. Personally, I would have liked some background music, and a concurrent score count would have been nice. Great job!

I love how you always attack these, its always interesting to see what you have made
I didn't always understand why I was breaking everything, I just wish that was a little clearer. Other than that good entry!
