Cell Out! by Rulrite

Hiya! Thanks a lot for checking out my game!

It's been a long time since I last joined in with a Ludum Dare - and I wasn't going to submit anything for this one, either, thanks to a busy weekend. But inspiration struck me on Sunday evening (of course!) and I just had to see if I could whip something up. Since I wasn't able to get to a computer until after midnight, this game wasn't made in 72 hours, or 48 - it was made in 24.

Needless to say, it's -very- short! I had a lot of stuff planned for it, but I decided to make something tiny and polished rather than try to cram all my ideas in. Hopefully you'll still enjoy it, even if there's barely any game to play.

Here's a load of stuff I had ready for it, just to give you an idea of what I would have done with more time.

You've woken up in a very strange place, locked in a very strange cell... So strange, in fact, that it's rocket-powered. Maybe you can find a way out?

--- Controls ---

Use WASD or the arrow keys to boost until you hit a block. Alternatively, click towards the edges of the screen to boost in that direction (use the background to guide you with your clicks). Be careful - you have a limited number of charges per level!

Restart any stage by either clicking on the 'R' in the top-left corner or by pressing the R key. You can quit the game at any time by pressing Escape.

--- Music ---

There's no music! There was no time for it at all, I'm afraid. I suggest finding a good 8-bit/chiptune track to listen to on YouTube whilst you play. A game that allows your own music? Surely it must have the best soundtrack!

--- Sound Effects ---

All of the SFX used in Cell Out! were downloaded from opengameart.org. If you want to use them too, you can find them right here: https://opengameart.org/content/512-sound-effects-8-bit-style

--- Android Version ---

If you'd like to play on your Android device, you can download the APK file! It's a post-jam port with very minor bugfixes (just a few layering issues).

Wow! Really fun, simple mechanic, and nicely juiced :)

You know it's good when you're sad that it was over so fast.

And bonus points for the title screen/first level and the finish animation. Nicely done!

I wish i had this game on my old gameboy ! Good concept with very clean old school monochrome 2D graphics. Would have liked to see more levels and more challenge. Great potential... Loved it !

I don't know why but I can't launch the game. Maybe I'll try on another laptop, I really want to give it a try, the graphics are so nice.

Awesome game! Really like its graphics, puzzle mechanics and level design. Finished it in several minutes though, could use more levels, but considering jam time restrictions and the quality of levels that are included I consider it pretty good as is.

Very short indeed, but incredibly polished for 24 hours. Lots of potential here and would love to see it in a more finished state.

I'm with the rest of the comments, the game is super fun but far too short! Please make some more levels and do a full release!

My god, I love the style of this game. The art and levels fit amazing together, i think this game would burst out somewhere like nitrome.com, or some sites kinda like this one. Sadly, not many levels - but still very nice, i like it :)

This is a really neat cross between a puzzle game and a platformer. It's sorta like 2048 with a spatial navigation element. What keeps this game from being entirely puzzle focused is the falling mechanic. Having to time bursts with your fall adds an element of platfomer-like skill based gameplay that you don't see in a lot of puzzle games. There are a lot of "puzzle platformers" that simply use platforming as a vehicle for the puzzles, but this game actually combines the best aspects of both genres. I think that combination of puzzling and platforming is this game's greatest accomplishment. Unfortunately, the game's short length keeps this play-style form being fully explored, but I'd love to see it expanded upon. In addition to the great gameplay, the little bit of screen shake when landing a long boost in addition to the player character's recoiling animation really sell the impact of each movement. Also, the resizable window is a nice touch. Overall, this is an excellent game that I greatly enjoyed playing.

Short but sweet is the definition of this game~ None of the levels were wasted in terms of their usefulness as a puzzle or a tutorial! The mechanics are simple enough, but I see there's a lot of potential for really interesting puzzles! The aesthetics are also pretty neat for something done in so little time... All in all, a hidden gem that will shine with enough time and polish~

Really cute! Wonderful little graphics and tileset.

A pity it's so short, but then again, having so many games to test and vote it's nice to find one that doesn't demand much. And you can always continue it when you have the time.
