Slay The Slimes by rk3Omega

[raw]
made by rk3Omega for LD 42 (COMPO)

You wake up from napping on the cold dungeon floor to find slimes raining in from the ceiling. Quick, grab your dagger and slay them! You will need to kill them quickly before they release their toxins.

This game has joypad support.

This is my first completed game. It feels good to finally finish something and get it out there. Thanks for playing, I hope you enjoy it!

I will be continuing development on this, but not as it is. I think I'm going to use the code that's there and maybe turn it into a Rogue-like platformer.

After you've played my jam version, I have also uploaded a seperate post-jam version with some major and much needed tweaks/features I wasn't able to implement during development (along with a lit new musical track if I say so myself. I've had it on loop all day). Check it out if you're interested. I guarantee you won't be disappointed. You can play it here: https://rk3omega.itch.io/slay-the-slimes-post-jam

Accidentally posted this comment instead of a blog, just ignore this. Derp derp.

I really like your artwork, but I have a suggestion. One of the things that made the game less fun was that slimes could fall on your head and there wasn't very much warning, so maybe some kind of warning that a new one is about to spawn

Thank you for the suggestion and the compliment. I intended to have them slowly drip from the ceiling, but unfortunately ran out of time. Once the voting is finished I'll implement it. :)

I love the artwork. The controls made it feel like I needed one more hand. Also, the pits just felt large to jump.

It was pretty good, but I found the controls a bit hard to deal with. maybe have [W] be jump:

Ah, I see. Thank you for the suggestion. I never liked using W myself, so I didn't think to set it. I can add it to the keybinds right quick.

Very well done, great theme and mood. I really liked it.

I like the art style of this game! It controls pretty smoothly. I think you could do a couple things to improve the experience, like showing in advance where the slimes are going to appear, so they don't land on you. Or making the platforms a little bigger so you have room to land on them.

Beautiful art style. Really hard for me to control - at least let me see some health pickups or something to give me hope of moving on!

A fantastic product in such short time.

I liked the graphics and also the audio of the game. Its kind of sad if a slime directly drops on your head with no chance of killing it. (Maybe just check before spawning if the x of the new slime is close to the players x position). Overall really well done.

@c0nst4ntin That's a brilliant fix that would've taken seconds to impliment, and now I feel silly for not having done it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Oh, really nice artwork! And the audio is good too! But the game world seems quite limited, especially with these slimes coming from somewhere above)

The artstyle is very nice. Love the black outlines and the slimes are adorable. The background loop is nice for being only a few seconds long.

Thank you for allowing the player to use the mouse button to attack. Good foresight!

One complaint I have is that the camera is too high, so you can't always see if a pit has spikes in it or not.

I noticed that you won't die from spikes while in grace time, so ofc I got hit on purpose by a slime and ran trough the spikes and jumped off the world :D

@donitz Ha! That's hilarious. I was aware of the grace period bug, but didn't bother fixing it because you can't idle too long or you'll lose and I didn't want to spare time fixing it. But I didn't even consider running off of the world... You just made my day. Thank you for the feedback. :)

The games art and music is adorable, but I was left with an unclear objective. A score system would be cool, too

Liked it! Art style is great and music was amazing. Only thing I think is problem is that it's kinda too hard. I hope you have a way to regenerate the health

At first I thought I had to navigate through some level and reach an exit, so I jumped to the right and died to spikes. I really like the art style, though.

Neat game, I'd place the camera a little lower so we see where we're jumping. Music and graphics are nice too.

A really cool game, beautiful art and the gameplay feels very smooth, some scores would be nice, good job! Also the controls printed in the wall is a very good idea, feels very natural to learn the controls this way. Also extra nice to see it's made in Godot ^^

First of all, Godot!
Second, nice game! It was fun. I have nothing constructive. Sorry!

having space be attack felt off for me because i am use to space being jump. I also felt cheated by enemies falling on my head and instantly dealing damage. Loved the art and music!

Nice game! I especially liked the art style, and destroying slimes was highly satisfying in large groups.

Good game feel, controls are easy and well described. Always nice to see it in game. I think it could benefit from some kind of points/count of kills (e.g slime deaths), always nice to have a body count.

Really nice game! I tried both the compo and post-jam versions. The art and animations are really good, and the additions in the post-jam game made it even better! I agree that the post jam song is lit ;)

I might've preferred the the classic controls of space being jump (like in your image for the post), instead of space as attack, though after some time I got used to it! I would've also liked the edges of the map to be clearer made so that there won't be any surprise deaths haha. I jumped too far in the post-jam version and only saw the "go back" sign when i reached that part of the map and inevitably died, though that was quite funny in its own way xD

Overall smooth controls and has potential to become a rogue-like as you've mentioned! ^_^

@mikixen Thank you for playing. :D You and I both agree on the controls, but seems like we're outnumbered. They were originally set up that way, but every comment I got expressed how clumsy the controls were. :\

Glad you liked the easter egg. The side thing wasn't something I considered when I made it, which is why feedback is great. I would probably fix it with a wall to let the player know that it's the end. But I enjoy the easter egg too much so I'll allow myself this bit of bad game design. :D

Thank you very much for the feedback!

saw this game on stream yesterday and a few seconds ago on the front page. good that you want to improve your game. and make it even better.

This was a fun game, the slimes would get very dense near the middle of the platforms and never patrol to the edge making it easy to just stand on the edge and defeating the purpose of having a score. I wanted to go and explore the rest of the level it looked so interesting! The art was beautifully done!

I spent about 20-30 minutes in the game. I often died the game is pretty hardcore. It would be cool to add more enemies, maybe faster or with more lives. I hoped that, they will appear. It's a little hard to catch the idea of the contest. But I really liked it, the maximum for everything!

nice art! The controls were alright, though I do usually expect space to be jump. I think it may be best to stick to conventions unless there's a good reason otherwise. Killing the slimes were okay, though it would have been nice to have more of a direct goal - like escape the dungeon or survive the slimes in a given period of time- just so there's a sense of progression in the game (interest curve). Keep up the good work!
