T3DRIS by Return Null

[raw]
made by Return Null for LD 42 (JAM)

It's basically 3D Tetris. In Tetris you run out of space if you don't carefully consider your block placement, it's the same in 3D Tetris, but with an extra dimension.

Made with the help of my own OpenGL engine, which doesn't have sound support yet so there is no sound. The game has a steep learning curve, but once you have climbed that curve you will be rewared by pure happiness and a high score.

Controls:

WASD : Move the block

SPACE : Speed up the block

Mouse : Move the perspective up and down

Q : Rotate block around the Z-axis

E : Rotate block around the Y-axis

P : Pause the game!

TAB : Switch projection mode between perspective and orthographic

Loved this version of tetris. Completely renewed the game. I couldn't figure out how to speed up pieces as they fell though. But again I can't state enough how much the 3rd dimension effects the game. Also great job on the custom engine!

@aaron-horrar Oh I totally forgot to include that in the controls information, you need to press space to speed the pieces up. Thank you for bringing it up, I've updated the page.

nicely done with OpenGL! Great job!

Btw, adding all the possible type of the tetracube would be cool.

@myalias Great idea I didn't think about that, it shouldn't be too much trouble to add so I'll add it in a post-jam version.

Great idea and it works better than expected but is a little hard to handle the rotation on three dimensions

@exofrenon Yeah that is the steep learning curve I stated in the description. I can't really make it easier than it already is, so you'll have to think logically about every move or get used to the rotation.

The theme always remind me of tetris, but for me that would be kinda of cheating. 3D Tetris is a exlent idea, and fits well to the theme

Interesting version of tetris. Although the controls are a bit hard to handle. I was constantly hitting space instead of tab and the opposite :D. Also an outline to the bottom that shows where the brick will land would be a great help.

@kisamegr I don't know how I could make the controls better, or at least easier to handle. I had considered an outline, but thought it would make the game too easy.

At the start it was easy but as more and more of the floor was filled the more i panicked, hehe great game!, colors a bit much

@return-null If you want your primary goal to be the actual controls (in all the 3D theme), then yeah the outline would make it easier and wouldn't be good. But if your primary goal is the classic tetris (to stack correctly and erase blocks of the ground), then the outline would make the gameplay much better in my opinion.

@kisamegr I understand what you mean, I will try to add it as a toggleable option in the post-jam version.

It hurt my brain. I think one major thing you could do to improve playability would be to add a guide to show you where your block will land. Possibly make the shadows go straight down?

@karai17 I have made a post jam version where I made a highlight where the block will fall, but I have not updated the page.
